Title: NES Ninja Platformer
Post by: tehwexxl0rz on December 23, 2008, 01:50:22 pm
I hope to actually make this game in Flash. Here's what I've got so far:

Tiles:

Walk:

Jump:

C&C please?

Love the character, but the rock tiles repeat a bit to much. This can be easaly fixed by making multiple rock tiles instead of 1 tiling tile.
I think vierbit said this somewhere else to

Found it:

you could do the same with the rock tiles using only 2 variations, little samson, for the NES does the same thing

Cheers  :)

Ray is right about the tiles. A few more tiles would go a long way here.
Small edit on the character to give him a bit more life.

Overall this is a nice start.

Yeah, the style is pretty sweet.

The animations, however choppy, fit the NES restrictions, and I agree with the others about the variation in the rock tiles. Work on that a bit.

With the jump, should he do a mid-air roll every time he jumps? Personally playing a game where that happened would distract me. Maybe try a regular jump animation?

Overall, nice, hope to see more.

Update!

Some rock variation:

Better? More still?

Bouncy walk:

Jump with more hair movement:

I had thought that any bounce at this scale would look too unnatural, but it turns out that extra bit of exaggeration makes it much more believable! Thanks, ptoing! :) Also thanks for your NES color pallet and list of restrictions! It's been a big help.

About the jump, perhaps he'll only spin if you're moving forward? (Meaning he won't spin if you're standing still?)

one thing that kinda bothers me is the grass. if you look, most of the grass is green and the bottom fringe is a darker green. what this kinda looks like to me is that the grass sort of curves outward (more like a hill), and that your ninja dude should be standing in the middle of it, not on top. if you want to make it look like a hill, put him in the middle, but if you want to make it look more like he should be where he is, try shading more of the grass.
this looks awesome otherwise. i love the little dude!

Thanks for the feedback! I understand what you mean about the grass, but how do you suggest I change it? I've already hit the color limit for the tile. Because of the way tiling works on the NES, I can't put the guy standing in the middle.

Hey wexxl0r, I love that little ninja. He has a lot of character for being so small.

For the grass, perhaps you could spread your darker green up higher into the lighter green. I don't think he should be in the middle of the grass, but I think you could get some more detail and texture by using the darker green more.

can't say that would be an improvement .. it takes away from the original intended look completely and makes the character look out of place in the process. i actually don't mind the size of the grass either personally @A@

aregon810- could the NES even display those colors? It's way-way too desaturated at any rate.

it's a bit surprising to see him doing a roll jump while remaining standing. Having his legs brought near to his face would make the rotation more plausible and possibly less distracting (/me think of the sprites in the NES version of TNMT, ages ago).

Glad to see another Ninja game! For my two cents, one thing I could add is that his hair could flop around even more...

Hmm...  Looking at it, I think the best advice I can give for your scenery is to not use so much black for the rocks.  That would work in a dark scene (like a lot of NES games tend to have), but I think something more conservative use of black like this (http://flickr.com/photos/racketboy/2107362185/) would work better for such a daytime scene.

AH, dtek, that's awesome! Thanks for the edit, I'll definitely implement some more hair animation like that! :)

KittenMaster, I understand where you're coming from, but at the same time, I can't think of any way to get rid of the black that would look better in the style that I've established. Perhaps when I add more elements to the game world, I'll get a better sense of how to make the atmosphere more cohesive.

Sorry there haven't been any updates for a while! I've put the project on hold until I've finished my art/design portfolios for college apps....

I'll be back at it after the 15th! :)
