Title: [WIP] Predator Head
Post by: Sever on October 11, 2008, 09:53:19 pm
Hey, new guy here

Heres a piece ive been working on recently, its a predator head that i will most likely use for an avatar here.

It needs hair, i know. Aside from that, if anyone has any suggestions or criticism, it would be greatly appreciated.

I am considering making some background for it, im not sure what would look good though. Jungle scene or temple scene maybe?

Thanks

The transition between the scales (?) on the top of the head and the skin of the face is a bit abrupt.

you mean the brown ones? theyre not really scales, just a pattern on the skin

but yea, they do fade more smoothly in the ref pic...

how would you suggest i make it less abrupt?

The scales should get brighter as they go down, thiers too many dark ones, and thier too close to the center of the forehead.

thanks for the advice

i figured out how to lighten the head pattern, and smooth out the transition from patterned to patternless skin, and i tried moving the black spots in the middle further apart. i dont know, im not liking that look too much, i think i might keep the black patches close together. what do you guys think?

I recommand you to make this more assymetrical, and do not mirror. You could get away with it here if you remove the over-obvious line between the black scales on the forehead, though it's just better to refrain from all mirroring in a still piece.

ok, so you recommend making what asymmetrical? the patterns, the shading, the shape, or everything?

At least the shading, the patterns will help alot in making it non-generic, though the shape is a bit too late you should consider doing so as well in the future.

The light source shouldn't be off-center for any technical reason, it just might make it more interesting to look at. Your choice if you want to change it, but I'd stick with the light source you've got since you've already done so much detailing. The one thing that really needs asymmetry are the spots. If you look at the reference, they aren't supposed to be symmetrical, so mirroring them looks looks kind of lazy and less realistic.

Really great work so far, anyway! :D

yea....i gotta stop being lazy :-[

ill make the pattern asymmetrical, and i may play with moving the light source

thanks for the feedback guys
