Title: Final Fantasy I style space marines
Post by: happymonster on August 26, 2008, 07:12:07 pm
These are a few sprites for a forecoming laser squad / x-com style game I want to work on..
I have done them in a Final Fantasy style as I both like the 16 x 16 size and this style of people.

The sprites here are for a player marine and I didn't want to put helmets on them as I feel that de-personalises them. The marines are going to be more individuals than standard soliders, being more of an elite variety, hence the slightly wild hair and headband (also a nod to x-com there).

I'm not much of an artist so I used a FF I sprite as a base I'm afraid. It's the only way I will be able to make decent graphics for my game.
I still think there are issues with these so if you have any constructive criticism or edits I will try to learn from your posts.. Thank you!

I'm sorry but this forum is not a mod/editing forum.  All work must be entirely your own with exception of collaborations and things of that nature.  Be sure to read the rules before posting.

this is your warning.  If you can, please try again without starting from FF1 as a base.  We can help get you going in the right direction.  Thats what we're here for ;)

To be honest about the only things left are the proportions, which I understand are rather generic..
I used it as a base to get a feel for the style.

I went and looked up some spritesheets, and in this case I'll have to agree with you here.  There is not enough to constitute this being an edit - though I do encourage you to start from scratch in the future.

sorry for the confusion

Ok.

I found that trying to put too much detail into the suit makes it look confusing, hence the lack of detail. The colours should be recognisable in the same way that space marines in Warhammer 40,000 denote different 'chapters'. In this case the colours would donote a player (upto 4).

I can't seem to put boots on him without it getting in the way of the gun in the running frames..  ???

Updated the sprites to add the final walk direction (only need 3 because the gun will be hidden behind the body).

Also a few tweaks..

I guess no C+C means it's not too bad..
I will try to add some more graphics soon.  :)

my only critique would be about the frame where he's shooting downwards. given the size of the gun, i doubt he could lift it that way, and if he shoots, he's going to get the gun in the stomach. He could instead put the gun on the side and having the other hand crossing the chest to help, à la Duke Nukem (see this reference (http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://img150.imageshack.us/img150/9715/duke2dukespriteswe5.png&imgrefurl=http://www.sprites-inc.co.uk/forum/showthread.php%3Ft%3D2321&h=350&w=520&sz=31&hl=en&start=1&um=1&usg=__q5_9bgkIOHb2O9qsLjiR9JflGns=&tbnid=4eJcClR1oaZJOM:&tbnh=88&tbnw=131&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dduke%2Bnukem%2Bsprite%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26safe%3Doff%26client%3Dfirefox-a%26rls%3Dcom.ubuntu:en-US:official%26sa%3DN), when he's side walking, not when using his gun as a jetpack)

I agree with you. I tried to make it look like one hand is gripping the trigger and the other is further down the barrell to support the weight.

I have to say though, I think it looks really weird how Duke Nukem is holding it in the gun facing down sprites!

okay, to make my point clearer:
1) is the shooting position i suggest, though this is a sideview here and you'll have to translate it to give it the proper perspective
2) is duke shooting down when hanging. still holding his gun on the side of his chest
3) is duke flying using the backforce of his gun. This time he's tying the gun against his chest so that he can be "pushed" upwards. That's typically how *not* to hold a gun if you don't want to be stunned, but duke is so strong that he can handle it and fly :P
