Title: A bandit know as Imp
Post by: Dokozai on August 20, 2008, 10:48:54 pm
Well, haven't posted here in a while and wanted your guys opinion on a sprite!

To set the record straight, Imp is a character for a game I plan on making, if I can learn some C++!

Comments and Constructive Crtiticism would be highly appreciated!

Some shading would be nice. If you still want to still with just 4 colors then I'd drop the pants color for a highlight/shadow color. I'd prefer a character with volume rather than pants any day of the week.

Well, I wanted all images for the game to have very limited colors, 1-3, maybe 4.

The sad part is, I don't have an actual pallet to work with.

Here is the updated version:

The pants are now gone, his color count is 4 colors.

I counted transparent as a color. So now it'd have 5. It looks better.... maybe drop the highlight for pants. Use the black as a shadow color for the pants. Palettes are important, if you don't have one yet at least keep in mind what kind of colors you'll be using.

Ok, I have changed the black to a darker grey, and got rid of the highlight grey, product:

Very cute character. I like the second version, but with pants.

Quickly played with him. Gave him pants too! I figured you should imply more dimension, I think the head is a sphere.

he's more a silouhetto than a character at the moment. no hair ? no nose ? no mouth ? unsure whether we see hair spikes or ears (though i'd bet on ears).
still, there's is clearly potential. Maybe 3 colors is over-restrictive here. As for the palette, i'd suggest you give Arne's a try (it should be in the featured' chest, iirc) or maybe pick in the NES palette if you prefer.

Better with the light.
I retouched some of your pixels, itīs because I like more the light from above.

Current version, using Arne's pallete:(http://img231.imageshack.us/img231/3886/imppi5.png)

He is more defined, I would've used the grey highlight, but the contrast between the base and the highlight is to great.
As you can see, his cones are ears, and he as a mouth.

that may absolutely not suit your character design, but i'd be tempted to go something like this:

personally i like the simple shading of Dokozai's Arne's palette version.

However I am not sure about the dark red in (our) left ear and more so about the bottom of the legs wear the troussers seem to join together - are they too long or torn? i don't think this is a particularly good edit but;

you might find this thread interesting; http://www.wayofthepixel.net/pixelation/index.php?topic=4502.msg55978#msg55978 i've always liked tocky's simple sprites :)

Thank you for the thread link, I actually wanted the graphics to be very simple. Oh and the pants are too long, not ripped.

New edit:(http://img129.imageshack.us/img129/8748/impmu8.png)

Fixed the pants and got rid of the dark red in the right ear.

I will be creating some enemy sprites based off some drawings I did yesterday, these should be put up later today.

A Few small monsters...

A Bomb thingie, a bat, and a smaller bomb thingie but without the fuse.

I think you should make the ears of the cat/rabbit/bunny/wolf thing in similar directions. It looks puzzled right now. Any expressions could easily be shown through the big ears.

Provided are some options you might like to explore.
Because of the size of the sprites you might want to stick with the flat colours. However you can give these sprites a little depth with some speculars whilst keeping the colour counts low. Depending on the backgrounds you are hoping to create, some AA might be nice on these little guys.

A couple of ways I remove colours
For the bomb character remove the yellow and opt for a white
Use some sub pixel around the right ear with some blue tones to create a purplish sense, whilst exchanging the lighter pink with the red tone.
I think the most of my changes are self evident so I will leave it at that.

I like the puzzled look. The sprite also looks like its getting too crammed and complex.

Yay, updates!

Thank you for your advice Zeid, I have taken out the yellow and replaced it with the grey highlight.

I personally like the original more than any subsequent version or edit.
That's just me though.  The new enemies look nice, especially the bombthing.

Thanks, I liked it with less colors, it was much more simple.

I might take out the highlights for the Imp, the enemies though could keep them.

I'm afraid to say that my favourite version was the one in the OP. Very nice indeed, I don't like it with the shading, it's head looks to shiny then  :)

If I were making this into a game, I would go with as few colors as possible. I liked it in Arnes pallette because there was a simple shading line that brought out the character, so that he would appear on different colored backgrounds. But like I said before, fewer colors the better because you will have to end up animating these things. Though you could get away with 3 frame animations if you tried hard... But whatever... Personally, I do not like the shiny rendering, makes the character less fluffy and more metallic; plus it gives him less character.

I agree with Cure and Krumbs - the first was, imho, best.

In keeping with the low coloredness, but moving into more complex shading than that of the original, however, I would suggest only two shades per color - a midtone and hilight. You wouldn't even need an extra for the red in the ears, it being used so sparingly already.

But for the legs,
why is the near leg and arm shaded darker? Shouldn't it be the other way around?

I liked the original the best, I've edited it using Arne's pallete.
The added sprite is a boss character, I've got a few to sprite, including the Imp's run animation!

HUZZAH!

Ugh, this was hard to animate although, I'm not a good animator!

Any advice would be nice! Sorry, I'm not able to loop it...

Finally, searching through some old program files and found a animation looper!
I'm so happy.

I think itīs a bit dark, like Krumbs says. What color you would make the background?
I like the animation  :)
