Can anyone give me examples of games with good top-down pixel art? By this i mean bird's eye view type stuff. I'm considering this perspective for my future game and i can't remember any good titles.

Pokemon! Frogger! Zelda Minish Cap! Early Grand Theft Auto! Bomberman!
I'm just naming random games with a top-down perspective, don't know if some are any good. So this could help a lot or a little. :0#

sorry, i should have been more explicit, i'm looking for stuff with more detailed sprites, like 64*64 or something like this and kind of a more realistic feeling. Something like this maybe http://carnivac.co.uk/forum/index.php?PHPSESSID=aefdf53fbe6e37d47726aad8d7ff25c4&topic=103.0
i know some top-down games myself but i'm looking for some with really good pixel art

Not exactly bird's eye, but whatever.

Zelda Minish Cap!
The 2D Zelda games are not really strictly top down at all, the perspective in those games is totally mixed, different in dungeons and houses as compared to outside and all that stuff. But it works.
Chaos Engine or Alien Breed are top down. Outzone on arcade has a topdown titled perspective as well.

the carnivac game looks like it was based off of contra 3s mode 7 overhead stages...so maybe you should check out that game
i think it would be best to just look at RPG's, check out some western ones, like Ultima or something

I think it's more inspired by Eagle's Nest which is quite a bit older than Contra 3.

Raiden II (http://shmups.classicgaming.gamespy.com/reviews/raiden2pc/index.html) has a strict top down perspective and has pretty neat pixelart in motion imho.

Ptoing, I think most classic gamers would say that Zelda and the like are in "three quarter view", that is, not seen straight from the top down, but from an angle of about 3/4 of a straight angle (67.5°) away from the ground. The fact that the head looks bigger than the body could be explained by the depth-perspective effect (although it's technically drawn incorrectly in most of those games, as you remarked.)

thanks everyone, those are some really good ones, i esp had fun playing alien breed. i'm going to try and animate a character in that style and then post on the pixel art board. thanks!
