Title: Isometric AI-project [Wip]
Post by: ortodoxx on July 17, 2008, 11:35:04 pm
Hello again folks!

A friend asked me yesterday to help him out with some graphics to an AI-project hes doing.

The program will use 2 diffrent characters wich competes against one and other in who can collect the most fish under a given time. They will also be able to hinder their opponent by breaking the ice close by to make them take a longer way to reach the fish.

Once the basics are done it´s though of that you as a "player" can modify the stats of one of the characters and then upload it on the internet and compete agains others to see who has made the better fish-catcher.

The "game" as it is now uses a 3x1 isometric veiw with a 12x12 grid.

This is a fast Mockup i did (it takes forever to place the cubes).

Here are some of the blocks.

Later i will start with the groundtile and the broken icetile.

C&C Welcome :)

The way you make the top of the blocks shine makes it look like they are an open box, instead of a closed one.

The right one is good.

I don't like the right one it's too plain.

I think you should make the reflections go from left to right ( or diagonally ) instead of top to bottom. That should fix the open box look problem.

Update on the blocks.

Also rendering the reflection either way then top/down will make it look even worse, the lines becomes too long.

I like the general color scheme you've used.
As for the material, I can tell the cubes are ice, but mostly because of the snow around them. The ones without snow look a little plastic-y.
Ice has a lot of contrast going on, reflecting it's surroundings. You can generally get away with adding strong highlights and dark shades. It can be quite transparent or somewhat opaque, obscuring what's frozen inside.

I suggest you take a look at some references, may help a bit. Here's some, hopefully helpful.

Well you can't have a fishcollector game without fishes, silly me !

here's an animated one that will be randomly placed on the grid. Also this is my first animated pixelart :)

The colors are not final and i will add a shadow to it.

Looks quite nice.

But if the fish is trying to jump, instead of looking stiff in the ground it should move it's tail.

I tried to redo the block, but im using a bad LCD screen which cant be callibrated, did i overdoo it ?

Also the fish animation wont play as regular as it does here. it will probably have a 3-4 sec "dead" idle and only jumps to give the viewer a visual feedback where it is if it would end up behind a pair of blocks.

It looks a tad too pale now on my bad lcd screen that also cannot be calibrated :)

It's too bright. And you should add more contrast, mainly to render the interior of the block of ice, combining it with some sharp highlights (ice is almost like glass, which is highly reflective).

After zooming, i noticed that you made each cube face affect the color of the fish, but it's so subtle it doesn't register in my head. More contrast should solve it.

Thank you all for the comments so far.

I reworked my Cubes, what do you think now ?

I really like this edit, the reflections look great!  Try making the base of the cube visible through the block like you had in the earlier images to make it look more transparent.

Nice update!  Maybe soften/widen the edges a bit?  It looks like a very precision cut cube right now.

AdamAtomic is right. Some nicks and dings here and there will do wonders for detail. :]

latest mockup, ignore the r-tarded penguin and the footsteps as they are just quick placeholders for the real thing.

Also. anyone have any wishes to what they would like to see deepfrozen ? :)

Ooo, and pelicans. They like to eat fish.

hahahah oh man that penguin is AWESOME.  Seriously.

Would still look cooler i think to have the corners of the ice slightly rounded, but this is nice progress!  The ground color looks too dark to me right now?

Oh, wow. I didn't even see that penguin...

Okay, then... a blue whale. To scale.

I started animating the penguin somewhat.

(http://img164.imageshack.us/img164/9146/animpenguin4wl2.gif)  (http://img164.imageshack.us/img164/5898/animpenguin5xe4.gif)  (http://img164.imageshack.us/img164/2458/animpenguin6sp6.gif)

There is also a technical update at: http://www.johannes.gotlen.se/blogcontent/aigame/

There is no Gamelogic to it atm but the programmer Johannes Gotlén is doing a wonderful job so far i think :)
The fish will be standing still normaly, you can also press and hold CTRL while clicking the cubes to remove and add new ones, this will change the penguins pathfinding after its regual loop is done, if done in the middle of the cycle they can go through the cubes.

Im still experimenting on the color of the snow so the borders dont fit atm.

The back of the penguin looks kind of flat. Aren't penguins usually wider than that?

This... is the stuff of madness. How did this happen? Why? Thank you for giving shape to subconscious fear.

Hahahaha, i dont know if you like it or not Helm but that statement made me laugh all the way to school and thats a 20 minute walk

The sprite blinks yes, it's sort of a power-down state to the penguin.

And penguins usualy have more shape to them but i think this gives more character to the penguin and there will also be a game ralated feature where you propell the penguin into iceblocks to break them, thus making them flat :)
