Title: First try at a walking animation
Post by: Winston on July 11, 2008, 04:46:39 pm
Okay this is the character I am attempting to do an animation for:
And here's my attempt at walking/dashing
(http://img513.imageshack.us/img513/4934/walkyi8.gif)
I really need some pointers, so any help would be appreciated
also I used this for a refference for the position of the legs in the animation: (http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f230/ben2theedge/XavierRunning.gif)

pretty good..
kinda hard to see the blue legs on the blue background..
the hand gets really big when i tcomes forward.. also, the arm looks awkwards when the hand goes back.. as if the hand is going further than the arm is, maybe include some motion to his shoulder?

Your character reminds me of a smaller pixelized version of this.

As for the animation his hand gets bigger, and it jumps to the top WAY too fast.
In which case this would be the better reference from ben.

That actually works very nicely! Just a side question, what's a good program to make gifs/ edit them I use microsoft gif maker right now but it's pretty bad

Personally I use graphics gale.
It's a good program for animating, and over all pixeling.

remember when running or walking, the shoulders move reciprocatively to the legs.

as it is, the shoulders don't move at all. also, on the extremes of the arm movement, you've got one fram for the forward, one frame for the back an what appears to be two frames that are almost identical in the middle. i would give them a little bit more difference, because as it is it looks like there's only three frames when there's four.

0Well. that didn't make any sense. i'd do an edit but i can't at the moment.

so;

1. Move the shoulders back and forth
2. differentiate between the "middle" frames a bit more to reduce the 'popping'

Your arms have a very obvious 'jump'. I think it's not as smooth as they could be. Not to mention the upper arm doesn't seem to move at all, so it gives them the appearance of just 'dangling' off the upper arm.

Okay I redid an animation using bens sprite as a refference
It sort of seems like he does a windmill with his arms which I'll fix later

I'm not really sure why it does the flashing thing?

I like the new running animation a lot better. My only suggestion is that now that you have a good set of frames for the animation, fill them in with the clothing and put the whole thing together.

Definitely the new animation is better. Perhaps think about splitting it into parts then overlapping the layers later to form the final animation. That would also make it easier to modify the costume in the game if you want to, and it's better to do that now

That's actually a good idea because the game is a beat em up like smash brothers so I need the arms to move independantly

updated animation still doesn't address the shoulders not moving issue. there's a reason the shoulers move, its because when you run or even walk, your torso twists laterally somewhat. when your torso twsts, your shoulders move with it. if you tried to run withtou moving your torso you'd probably fall over.

Also, i'm not really fond of the walk cycle being almost a complete 1:1 recyling of ben's character's movements.

It might help to use a real-life reference, or something that starts off less stylized, like that which is located here http://www.biomotionlab.ca/Demos/BMLwalker.html
