Title: [WIP] Angkor Wat Temple in Cambodia
Post by: Peach on June 27, 2008, 11:30:20 am
This is what I made for the weekly compo on PJ.
Right now I'm stuck in color tones and if there're rifinitures I can do to improve it (i.e. sky?)
fyi: palette is limited to 16 colors.
before

after (joined two colors in one, hence 15 colors atm)

any C&C?

i prefer the dynamism of the colours on the second one, but there's something a bit disappointing in the dithering on the tree, which do not seem to represent any structure/texture of the trunk, but just an attempt to have an indermediate tone.

(or maybe that's just what the tree look like, since i've never seen a tree like that :P )

the name of the temple is actually "Ta Prom".

When you look at the photo you will see that the colours are a lot more unified than in your picture. You seperated the temple and the tree very harshly. I think you should redo the ramp and unify it so that the colours mix more. Get some greens on the tree, some browns on the temple and so on.

ok....
(http://peach.smartart.it/private/wip/angkor-wat-pre.gif) => (http://peach.smartart.it/private/wip/angkor-wat.gif) => (http://peach.smartart.it/private/wip/angkor-wat-1.gif) => (http://peach.smartart.it/private/wip/angkor-wat-3.gif)

there are actually some small quirks on the tones used on the rocks
I'm planning in reworking on the background: leaves and sky.

@Helm: you're right, unfortunately that wasn't the image I used as a reference in first stance, but I agree with you, the reflex of the terrain on the building is quite interesting. I'll add more "redish" pixels on that and see what happen.

ok
thanks Helm for the hint
I did a major rework on the ramp tones and came up to this:

I'm working right now on the shade of the tree and as you can see the lower part is actually well integrated.
I also added redish pixels on the temple to give more light to it.
there're some colors that are very similar and I'm not sure to merge them into one
still to be done: the top part of the tree, the sky and the leaves on the background. and some small things on the bottom part.

The leaves on the trees could use some AA... if you notice in the reference photo there's a soft glow on the edges of the leaves that makes them much less abrasive against the sky. I'd make the sky brighter, too - it's pretty gloomy right now but maybe you were aiming for that?

You're getting there, but if you're going for something sunny, I think a bit more contrast would be a good idea. Also, I think you should try and add a few more colors on the temple, like another brown and green to make it look mossier. ;D Like so:

Ben2theEdge & Arachne: thanks a lot for your suggestions

@Arachne: thanks to your edit I added one more color for better shaping the tree
@Ben2theEdge: I redid the background and the leaves

still unsure on the background, but actually these tones make it very "cambodian" style ;)

just 15 colors, still one color is free :)
