Title: Isometric Community - First Shot at Iso
Post by: Sokota on June 26, 2008, 08:26:31 am
Ok, well, I was inspired by someone else's work, so I decided to try a tiny bit of Isometric. Please crit, as always, and should I do bigger stuff? Or does size not matter too much with isometric? Also, how to shade isometric? With two light sources? Or just from the ground up? Feel free to edit and show me stuff!

sorry man, but this isnt isometric. you should put your corners in a different angle set.

look at this reference, it will help you, i think.

The one you have there is Cabinet projection....
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cabinet_projection

Shading is made whit one light source..actually it depends, but normally one side is darker than other...if that makes sense to you.
Actually watch the iso cube above, it shows all you asked, form, shading...

Ah, so is cabinet projection totally wrong? I think I've fixed my angle stuff. I figured I had to start completely over. In this update, I'm starting to work on another building, (Just a block atm), but I don't have time to quite finish it yet, but anyways.. Anyways, I'm trying to break away from the black line outlines, so please bear with me about how..lack of detail there is. Also, I'm trying to work with colors (ignore the grey!  :-[), but I think I nailed it for the sidewalk. Not sure. What's your opinion? Got any crits?

i'm sorry for the last post. i forgot to critic your original piece. i'll try to be constructive as much as i can (and know)
ok the thing:

*the dithering is very poor, but the pattern you use reminds me sega style, wich is totally ok, at least for me. You can make the colors more contrasted or to go from white to bluish gray, the steps should be visible but not too contrasted.

*outlines. the same fail as many: try to think of the outlines as a tool to say where is the light source. You should desaturate the color near the outlines and lower his lightness until about 33% of his original lighting. Black outlines are good to remark some important sprites on games but not to use them everywhere, if you arent trying to keep that style i'd rather consider to work on that fields better before trying to do anything more complicated.

*grass textureżż?? you are making a static pattern on the grass, as i can see, it looks like a c64 checboard :)
but not a grass texture. it's more like a field to play cards, you know? it's sure it'll help you reading some tutorials before trying to attempt a complex drawing, although it's good to learning on the fly :D

good luck.

PS: look for references for grass turf on google ;)

Well, I was hoping you would critique my update, that way I knew if I was headed in the right direction.

Thanks, anyways!

thats better, but still have some serious issues:

the projected shadow we have on the second....it does'nt go right. you seem to have either two lightsources or you draw wrong that shadow. i'll do it shorther.

the outlines you are using here, they are better, but still too light, try darkening them a bit :)
the grass, it's easy to give it a nice texture, and the streetsides are the best of the pic by the moment...but make sure to put shadows on the left side to go ok with your lightsource ;)
regards!
