Title: Tree tile WIP
Post by: DE on December 10, 2005, 09:59:46 pm
This is my first tree, so I'd be happy to receive some tips.
8 colors, shades of grey only, platformer style, for 320x240 resolution.

very nice, i think you should bring the dark shadows near the top left also, right now its just like one clump of leaves. use the black to divide the leaves up more.

Yes very nice i love the way you have textured the leaves with big pixels! very original! I have a question... What made you make a tree? Everyone makes trees. It's like a grade that you get up to. "If you can do a good pixel tree, your a good pixel artist!" Hmm nice signiture quote there. Anyway nice work dude.

Thanks,

Dan

Very nice, but you might want to reconsider the shading. It's shaded like a straight gradient, while a tree, being a sphere needs to be a radial gradient.

And Dan:

Everyone makes the tree someday!

Well, I needed it for a tileset =)
I forgot to tell you, that the tree isn't standing just in the middle of a forest, but is located on the street in the city and strongly illuminated straight from the top by lanterns. I'm not sure how that would  alter shading, so...
You are right with the top, though, I'll add stronger shadows there.

It looks great as is, but it looks like a small bush. trees would tend to have separate brances, thus separate bushes. think of the tree as a pile of bushes. just like on tsugumo's tutorial, where he talks about that tree from world of mana 3, or sword of mana. dont remember now.

the tree was made of several spheres, you know? and that would influence on the shading, making it not so smooth as yours.

btw, the style of shading you got there is really nice!! go go go!!!

this tree looks very good at the moment, has a nice ambience about it.  the harsh lighting doesn't come across too well though, the shading is too evenly distributed downwards over the foliage in a gradient fashion.  you also need some darker sections, holes in the foliage used as a broader shading from the bottom, dithering with image elements, not just pixels.  consider changing the outlining at the top of the tree as well.  The trunk would probably also be in a much deeper shadow, with the roots (if any) extending out of the shadowed area to be touched by the light.  Some clarity of form is also lost at the lower right section of the trunk as it merges with the roots.

this is a great tree.
