Title: Pixelation Downtime. Important info!
Post by: Indigo on June 03, 2008, 12:22:19 am
We apologize for the downtime.  This seems to have been a much bigger problem than pixelation alone.  The data-center at which pixelation is being hosted suffered an explosion which took out nearly 9,000 servers.

You can read about it here: http://tech.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=08/06/01/1715247

It appears that the majority of the problem has been resolved, but don't be surprised if there are a few bumps along the way.

Hang tight!

-Dan

Update:
There was a period of time where ThePlanet was running our server off a generator.  That generator failed, thus the continued downtime.  They've since bought a new generator that can handle that amount of power needed.  Permanent solution scheduled for this weekend.

UPDATE:
If pixelation is down in the future for whatever reason, you can go here http://wayofthepixel.blogspot.com/ (http://wayofthepixel.blogspot.com/) to see if there are news about it.

I read about that explosion on Slashdot right after it happened. Nice to see that you're back though.
For a sec I was almost afraid that you'd moved again. It took me four years to find you after you left pixelation.cjb.net.

hey

Yay, it's finally back ^_^.

I was a bit worried for a while, would have been sad to see it go.

Hah, I thought I might have got banned or something also, and I tried joining through proxy server and found it was still down, hehe.

You would still be able to browse even if you were banned, as far as I know it only stops you from signing in and posting.
Also, we wouldn't ban without a reason!

But whee, it seems it is back.

Good to see it back up. Any estimate on the non-default theme being back? I've got the boring SMF default here.

Dude woah those posts are from 2008.

Edit: Oh yeah, I remember that explosion. In any case its really good to see pixelation back up again.

I figured I'd save thread-space, unless I've missed another thread somewhere else?

Skin is a matter of mia having time. So it could be a bit longer. About the zoom stuff I will hassle Adam asap.

Finally, I was a bit worried..
I even looked around for other pixel art forums, but they were either too inactive or lacked in quality..

I'm so glad it's back <3

Can't say I loved the old one either  ;D

Glad you're back to business guys!

It just doesn't feel like pixelation to me without that chunky gray/purple/yellow scheme.  ;) and these smilies are so green on this blue scheme! By the way, http://pixelation.wayofthepixel.net/ no longer works. Just wondering if the new host allows you subdomains like that.

Subdomains work a bit different on the new host. But I made a subdomain called pixelation now and put an index file there which just redirects to the normal url.

Awesome, thanks. I wouldn't have known the forum was online again unless I got desperate and clicked the alternative urls chrome provided, as I've used the subdomain address pretty exclusively, and I imagine there were others.

You should probably just drop an .htaccess file in there and add some rewrite rules.

Do you guys need any assistance with anything? I'm working for a webhosting provider as a part time job, also fixing up things for our customers, so I could help you out if you want. If you don't have a backup of the theme I could at least install the image zoom stuff, I have that lying around somewhere.

The "plain white" and the "blue-tinted white" as background make it less comfortable to judge the quality of posted art. I hope at least that can be fixed soon. Keep up with the good work.

Well, from a color/contrast point of view, is a white background really optimal for displaying art? Not a rhetorical question. :P
I assume it depends on the work itself, but I doubt a lot of pixel art is intended to be viewed on a light background.

Anyways, I hope we'll get the old skin and the zoom function back soon :)

Is this not the same zoom script we used?

Zooming works again. There shouldn't be any interpolation problems with IE/Firefox either. For Chrome, there doesn't seem to be anything to remove interpolation yet.

Boy am I glad that zoom is working again -- thanks!
But...my Android phone doesn't have a crisp scale, so the images are blurry, just like when I was using Chrome :(
Anyone know how to fix this?

We have fixes for FF and IE to counter the interpolation.
But if the browser in your phone uses Webkit (which is what Safari and Chrome use) then there seems to be no fix for this. And seeing that Android is Google stuff it probably is Webkit.

I have an Android phone, and the image crispiness is an issue you can get  with a goofy but easy method - just use the multi-touch pinch zoom to get it zoomed to the size desired and then just place two fingers on the screen as if as if to zoom, but leave them in place without actually zooming. The pixels will not smooth over while your phone is in the process of zooming to preserve performance I'm thinking, so just put two fingers down while looking at the pixel art. This works with the built-on Android browser fine for me on my Droid, which runs Android OS 2.2 and 2.3.

That's fantastic, Argyle, and it works great.  But if anyone knows of, say, some kind of app that'll do it, too, I'd appreciate it.

The guy working on that is my manager, I'll ping him and find out what's going on :)
