Title: Game Developer Refuge Back Up. (Was Taken Down Earlier)
Post by: NyanNyanKoneko on December 09, 2005, 04:42:22 pm
EDIT: The forum is back up.

http://www.gamedevelopersrefuge.org

/EDIT

EDIT 2: Most Recent Info

The Game Developer's Refuge is moving to http://www.gamedevelopersrefuge.org, in the next couple days / few weeks.  In the meantime, just use the temp board I set up if you want to chat and stuff.

/EDIT 2

Yikes, I guess madrake got into an argument with someone or something happened and the GDR got taken down.

Anyways, I'm a big fan of the Game Developer's Refuge, and I don't want to see this important board vanish into thin air.

Back on topic, Mandrake posted a message that he's looking for someone to host the board.  I happen to have some extra webspace on playingwithyarn that we can use for free.  I can set up an FTP account and let one of the mods upload it / maintain it. But unfortunately, I don't have his e-mail, nor any way of contacting him.

So, I know a couple GDR people post here, and I'd like to keep everyone informed about what's going on.

Also, if anyone knows how to get in contact with mandrake, let me know.

EDIT: I just realized mandrake registered on the board, and he gave an e-mail.   ;D

To those interested I will probably be starting a product development forum soon, which is basically GDR, but with added space for any idea discussions (designs for your own ipod-like, design of certain stuff, etc..)

Nyan, do you have mandrake's email? I'd like to ask him some stuff

Hrm, it would have been nice to know about the decision shut down prior to it actually happening, considering Pixel-Arts was affiliated with them. Now we have a big game design void...  I just got on for the first time today, so I'm discussing this with the staff.

I have no problem offering space to run the site here, but I would hope that the old management be willing to maintain it. Need time to figure things out. Will post later.

The e-mail listed on pixelopolis is: pjessup@lecom.edu

I e-mailed him over 8 hours ago though, no response.

OK, I set up a temporary forum for people to use until we know what's what.

http://www.playingwithyarn.net/gdr/

I don't know if this is going to be the final location for the GDR, but it's probably a good idea to minimize downtime.  We can transfer over any new posts later to another site, if necessary.

I disabled having to check your e-mail to sign up.  So just register and you're set.

We're also discussing this over at the COD wiki (http://codwiki.webhop.org/), if anyone's interested in some alternate information.

In case you don't want to go over to COD Wiki...

They are moving the game developer's refuge over to http://www.gamedevelopersrefuge.org/.  But it's going to take a few days for them to set it all up, aparently.

In the meantime, feel free to use the temp forum I set up until the new site is ready.

I dont see why GDR had to go down... Was there enough protest on the matter that Mandrake couldn't simply delete the content?

Pixelopolis ended up censoring the advertisement and the poster was understanding about the matter.

I've concluded that we may be willing to remain affiliated, but we really need some heads up about whatever plans are settled upon. If GDR is unable to rebuild, then the 72HGDR forum will be our choice as a game development forum. Principally, it may be more rewarding to rebuild on 72 since the primary focus is rapid game development, which should spur more application of game design on top of discussion and education. And FYI, The 72 forum is already up, customized and stable (and it's a phpbb).. we just need to skin it. :)

Are you saying that GDR was destroyed because of arguments over the Pedophile MMORPG? I guess I got there earyr as all I saw was praise over the idea and comparisons between the controversy it would cause and GTA.

Actually, madrake didn't want that sort of content on his server, now or in the future.  He has kids now, so he deleted the site.

One could say, the site was taken down because we entertained the idea.

Yes crab, I made that speculation since I didn't have any first hand knowledge about what was going on. So seeing that people were giving the matter some credibility, whether it was debated oppositionally or not, Mandrake chose to shut down...
