Post by: Talos on May 25, 2008, 10:02:06 pm
Well I'm planning on getting a job in the summer, and buying a cheap laptop and Flash from Amazon or Ebay, And I started the tiles. So far I have desert:

Ok if you're doing desert sand-waves them you cough shape with pixels, but it looks just like pure shadow of waves but without waves if you understand what I mean. You need to work a bit more on shading I say

Check this picture and then try to shade your tiles.

I really like where you're going. The palette is interesting too.

@Blodyavenger: That's a desert from afar, made up of dunes dips and flat areas,

@Zenobia: Thank you. The palette is an attempt to do something like Adarias / ndchristie would do. I think maybe mine's a little washed out but I don't care.

The game will be a tactics game (Final Fantasy Tactics (Only ever played once), AoE: Age of Kings for DS) I started a base for the people but haven't finished and will post when I get home.

Independently, I definitely like the tiles. But the tiling appears to be a bit obvious. The first two tiles, specifically, are bounded almost completely by the lightest shade, which seems to draw a grid of pale yellow over the image. You should try and continue the dune waves over the edges of the tiles if possible.

true or not that hardly matters, the particles in sand allow for it to appear the same close as from a distance.

see the grains?  this must be close.

Some rocks I'm gonna tile when I'm done with. Right now I need C+C on 'em. Don't heed white residue that's leftovers I'll clean up later.

Well I haven't tried them on the tiles, but... you used the samesort of  palette. That's not going to work very nice and it's also a little unrealistic. Desert rocks can still be gray too. You can make them gray-yellow or gray-pink if you want them to match with the sand. I'd go with gray-yellow-orange, as in, a gray rock with the colour of sunshine/sunset shining on it. This is what real desert colours looks like anyway http://www.hat.net/album/middle_east/002_syria/001_highlights_of_syria/031_tetrapylon_of_palmyra.jpg
Right anyway, in short, try something else with the colours, is my opinion, whether it's a different palette or more contrast.

As for the tiles I still really like where you're going, but it continues to look a little rough. You know, those examples they posted, they've got lines in them, but it's still sand, it... flows. I could try a quick edit to show you but I have to go meet my German tutor right now.

I was planning on changing the palette anyway. But first I wanna get shape. would it help if I put a new palette in first?
