Title: PIXEL ART DAY, STAGE 1
Post by: Helm on May 20, 2008, 08:30:49 am
Let's create a pixel art day so we can celebrate it each year with live sacrifice and the like! First stage is to find out which month is the predominant month of birth of pixel artists. When we're done with that we shall set a specific day. I will let this poll run either for a full month, or until we have 200 votes or so. Do we even have 200 active users? We'll see! Participate, these things matter! :D

Just wondering, but in the case December wins, wouldn't it overlap with the SS stuff?
I mean, I'm aware it could still be done, but I think it would be better not to saturate a single month and leave the rest of the year running dry.

But either way, October for me.

May is the most popular birth month (i think), by the time the poll runs out, we will have to wait an entire year for it to come.

plus would it not make more sense to put it in the summer, the board always seems to run a little dry over summer months and this could be the event needed to keep the activity levels high.

I think things are slower in Summer because people are more likely to go outside because the chances of good weather are higher and such.

Keeping people inside during summer is what creates all these May-ers!

No, no November is National Novel Writing Month already.

My birthday's the 6th of February. Nice neutral month, when everyone's trapped inside by the rain-that-isn't-quite-snow-eventhough-you-wish-it-was.
Otherwise, I vote September, since everyone's just getting their energy back after summer... and we wouldn't have to wait until May.

Also, September would be the pseudo birthday of the latest incarnation of pixelation. September 20th if I remember correctly.

Post by: Rosse on May 20, 2008, 05:49:21 pm
Will this be the Pixelation-Day or the Pixelart-Day? If the latter maybe a historical date would fit (after deciding a month), like first release of DeluxePaint (or Paintbrush 1.0 ;) ), invention of the pixel (hard to research I think, just found year), birthday of henk nieborg...
If it would be “just” the Pixelation-Day, then maybe the first release or re-release of the forum itself would be a good date, or the publication of tsu's first tutorials...

just ranting... my month is september ;)

as an unofficial delegate of the October party, we hereby recognize the right of September to be the month wherein this hallowed day might fall, both for its chronological proximity to that month we call our own as well as for its current lack of other major days (oktoberfest notwithstanding, for though it falls in time within the month before, it bears our name).  We will be, therefor, and in our own desire, content with our current revelries.

I also like september because university studies haven't gotten hard-core yet

8th should be the right pixel day, since:

  • 8 bits (for first),
  • 8*8 (or 8*n) pixel squares/sprites,
  • 8*n color palettes,
  • 8 sprites per scanline,
  • and so on.

a magical number when it comes to pixel art. . .

16th of august makes for 16/8 too... I don't know. May seems a bit arbitary if you think about it, I should have polled for which month you WANT, not which month you were born on. All I planned at that day was an activity for people to pixel small offerings to the pixel gods!!

Please, please, no wiki fight!

Also, the activity I had in mind is this. THE PIXEL GOD (not yet identified) IN THE SKY DEMANDS TRIBUTE, WIELDS POWER TO STRIKE THE UNBELIEVERS DOWN, YOU SHALL GIVE HIM SACRIFICE. Top in the thread will be a pixel picture I've drawn of the god being all stern and tribute-demanding and below shall post our users, pixel arty creatures of any size or color count that they will animate HORRIFICALLY BURNING ALIVE FOR THE CRUEL GOD ABOVE. Tribute will be rewarded with high-fives and cookies, and if there's enough tribute at the end the pixel god shall smile his blessing upon you all!

(seems a good idea? discuss)

how about....we just become mediums for the pixel god?

like, maybe you're the first one and you're wrapped and contorted in obscene ways (maybe your body ends up as a square because the god is really just a pixel :p) then your wretched body blurts out the will of the god.

And the will of the god is that we punish ourselves

1- by making pieces with only the guideline of employing his holy number 8 in as many forms as possible, in vain attempts to bring to art form his unattainable essence.
or
2- by making our avatars contort and do other typical god-sacrifices...gutting blodletting, burning and whatnot...or maybe the ultimate sacrifice, sacrificing holy beast of the YUS bird =o or the native Bruce Lee :p
any of that sound any good ???

What about if for 24 hours everyone makes as many 64x64 images that they can and we use these tiles instead of pixels in a separate image.
The first stage will be easy, final assembly might be a hassle.

A patchwork like that would be easier than the iso collab but could still produce quite interesting results.

So, pixel day is on August 8th, huh?

I like the idea of making something with restrictions revolving around the number 8. Maybe like 8 tones/colors worked into an 80x80 area?

The Pixel-god thing is fun. How about we make a pixel image depicting our version of the Pixel-god?  ;D

Title: Re: PIXEL ART DAY, STAGE 1

wouldnt it be easier to do it in reverse and in two steps?

first we run a contest, to choose the image of which we're gonna make a composite.

Everyone pixels...something in 8 x8 x8 restrictions, we run a poll and someone wins.

once we've done that, we run a collab sort of like the iso one, only that which each "spot" corresponds to a pixel of the original image.

Each must make an image of any restrictions, only the average color must be that of his corresponding tile.

how's dat?

Title: Re: PIXEL ART DAY, STAGE 1
Post by: Conzeit on July 31, 2008, 10:16:33 pm
hrmm..I just put a liiitle bit more thought into this

Say we chose to make something incredibly small like 8x8. that would generate 64 spots for the latter collab!

Say we chose something like 16x16, that would be 256 spots for the latter collab.....

both those 2 numbers are incredibly small, so the first stage of the competition would be kinda...awkward, can you just imagine post after post of pieces smaller than our emoticons?

8x8 could even be fun cause I think most of use are used to work much much higher than that.

Then, what about the colors? there's the obvious, that we use the multiples of 8: 8, 16, 32....64.....as we always have.

But is there a way to make thetones themselves ruled by number 8? I think we need the help of Ptoing on that one!

Title: Re: PIXEL ART DAY, STAGE 1

The whole idea about pixel art day should be that we do most of the work on that day.
We can't have people giving up tiles etc.

That's why I suggested we make tiles on the 8th
and then downsize all tiles to something like 3x3 and figure out what we can do with 'em during the next step
and then we have a deadline for the final artwork on the 16th or something like that.

Remember that the final artwork will have alot more colors if we don't use a common palette.
8 x 8   times 8 colors = 512 colors
16 x 16 times 8 colors = 2048 colors
Title: Re: PIXEL ART DAY, STAGE 1
Post by: Helm on August 01, 2008, 07:23:29 am
Exactly, if we could get as much stuff done on the day itself it'll be great and then a 16th deadline like robotacon says.

I am really really not sure with the downsizing though. I'll summon Ptoing to imagine a coloring scheme for this.

8 colours, almost greyscale, middle 6 colours just have a shift towards red, green, blue, cyan, magenta, yellow a bit.

this still might change tho.

sounds pretty cool!  I'ma lock myself up in my room and, literary, sacrifice the whole day to the Pixel God on 8th probably . . .  god, if I just have more time! :)

I wanted to propose a side-competition where we'd be making various Pixel Day-themed T-shirt designs.  we could then wear so prepared shirts and show off in the streets; but it's too late now, I'm afraid.

nevertheless, I'm in!

Maybe we have this one running somewhere between 08/08/08 and 08/08/09 ?

I have a better idea. Since according to icanhascheezburger.com 8/8/8 is also LOL day. We could also go for a lolcat theme.

Jesus christ no.

So, recapping, how about 16x16 pieces, as many as each user wants for the duration of the day, advised to (if one makes more than a couple) travel the span from 'very dark' to 'quite bright' so we can then use them as meta-pixels to build bigger stuff?

OK, new palette for greater range. Helm approved.

I knew you'd love it.

That idea sounds pretty sweet tho.

Okay so this is what I propose we do tomorrow!

I will start with these 16 'tiles'

Any person is free to make any number of tiles they feel like that can be completely unrelated to my tiles or they can continue some of my tiles. Anything from 1 tile to 16 of them. They post them here. Tiles will pile up for a few days (I'd say 'whatever we do just today!!' but I think that's pretty unrealistic. Anyway we'll know when we have enough) making little 'exquisite corpses' with each other. Try not to make too many tiles that continue your own tiles cuz where's the fun in that? Keep in mind you don't have to follow anyone else's tile if you don't feel like it, you can just make your own stand-alone tiles.

At the end of a set time we gather up the tiles we have and we can then do two wonderful activities. One of them is to assemble the connected tiles in obvious (and less obvious!) ways. At this stage we are free to alter the tiles of another person slightly (background colors etc) so they fit, but not super-too much, where's the fun in that. After - or sideways - to playing exquisite corpse with each other, we can see if we can make bigger pictures with the tiles we have acting as meta-tiles. The possibilities are endless in this! After a week is done, we collect and make a banner and feature as usual, listing the names of the participants and giving out cookies for happiness! Sounds nice?

Could you summarize the rules and guidelines for this somewhere, just for the sake of clarity?

This palette (http://ptoing.net/888palette2.png)

16x16 pixel icons, as many as you want. I think that Helm should make a proper phase2 thread!
