Title: [WIP] grass/cliff tile
Post by: thelivingphoenix on May 10, 2008, 05:00:58 am
I guess this is my first real attempt at pixel art... any help you guys could give would be nice.  I'm not sure about the colors or anything at the moment... I think the grass on the top is alright, though... the cliff part is what I'm having trouble with.

Newbie's opinion: Grass is nice if you ask me but cliffs needs a bit more of shading and contrast otherwise shape of cliff itself is realy good.

Very good first attempt you have there =)
Your grass looks good but it suffers from a tiling artifact, which draws a grid between your tiles. See here :

The way to improve this is to work on a tile which has the right(/bottom) part of your tile on its left(/bottom) and vice versa. This way you'll be able to smooth the transition and then you'll simply have to switch back parts to get your tile as it was meant to be.

Now for the cliffs : they lack proper contrast, and more precisely a dark shade, which would help in defining their shape.
You might want to check this very useful infos privded by vedsten some time ago about making cliffs (this thread was also my first attempt at pixel art...god that was awful >.<):

heh, well, it is for RMXP :-p  I like RMXP, I'd just rather most/all of the tilesets used be original... :p  maybe I'll have enough money to pay someone to do them for me later. :-p  thanks for the help so far, I'm going to work on it tonight.
