Title: [WIP] sword-swingin' goat C+C

Been plunking away at this little guy for the past few hours and I'm pretty satisfied with him at the moment (although his sword and shield still need work) but I figured I ought to post him here and get some critique from you smarties.

I'm kind of dreading trying to animate this now... :(

well, you're very much likely to end up with a good anim by starting to animate something like the leftmost picture first, and then add details on all frames.

At last, a goat thats safe from Helm! Excuse the in-joke and welcome to Pixelation LaserBeing!

The first one is alot better. I think this is because the crotch is correctly placed. Once you added pants, the crotch has moved to the left so the hip bone is angled impossibly relative to the upper body. Another problem is the shoulder armour with the spike coming out. I find it distracting because the spike lines up with the horn. Also, it hides part of the head making it harder to figure out we are looking at some sort of goat human.

With all pieces, the arm seems poorly positioned - like it is too short and not bent right. Basically, if you can't 'act out' the position yourself, then you need to change it. If the arm is bent towards us, then you need to work on how you drew the elbow i think to better convey that.

Goodluck!

Addressed the pelvis issue (I was kind of hoping if I ignored it long enough it would just go away) and added a little bit of detail on his eyes and mouth. I lengthened his arm a bit; still looks a little awkward but I have a feeling part of that is that the sword looks so unnatural, so I'll probably have to redraw the sword and arm completely.

I see what your saying about the shoulder horn, sharprm, but I'm still a little hesitant to get rid of it completely because I think it'll look cool when it's not at such an obnoxious angle. I might try making it smaller and/or angling it differently though.

Thanks for the good advice and the warm welcome!

Started working on a run cycle... going a bit slowly but I'm having fun with it. It's still rough at the moment, and the motion of his right arm is a bit jerky which I will try to iron out as I clean it up along with a few other little niggles (his torso is kind of all over the place), but overall I'm fairly pleased with how it's turning out.

So uh... now's your chance to tell me how wrong it is :D

do not copy-paste your legs and then just repaint the hips and darken the back leg!!!  It makes it look like you've got half the frames you actually do.

Other than that, great start :)

I uh, actually didn't do that D:

If it looks that much like I did though, it's obviously something that needs to be fixed... I'll see what I can do.

EDIT:

I redrew the left leg and added his tail. I think it looks slightly better, although I've just realised that the positions of the knees during the high points look even more similar now... oops!

Since he's holding a sword and a shield and the way you've got the upper body moving I don't think he should be running unrestricted.
Have the right leg merely pass the weight over to the right leg that does most of the running. Try it in real life and you'll see what I mean.

Overall animation is quite good, but if you dont want to get involved in heavy duty blinking business try to create a motion arc for every point  - elbows, hands, sword point - pretty much everything and follow those arces. I made  an example for a sword point. Also in some frames legs joint makes impossible bending. I little rush on edit, but i hope you'll get an idea=)
