Thought I'd give a try at a rock type terrain. Crits?

I think what is breaking the effect for me is the fact that there is a single white pixel on most of the near ones. It's like my eyes are picking that out.

main problem for me, is that you really only have one tile because you crafted the cliffs by using the floor tile and cutting away pixels till you got a cliff edge. Main problem with that is you don't have a lot of tile variation as a result, which makes things boring. Rather than make the cliffs using another tile, make it from scratch. Have a floor tile next to it so you can ensure the tile edges are seamless.
Your ceiling tiles would benefit from even moderate detailing. Check out super mario world 2 and see how they detail the ceiling compared with floors.
Last couple of things you might want to consider:
-more of a gradual transition from rock to flat dirt. Make it take two tiles to transition instead of one. Mostly suggesting as a way to make the rocks more interesting
-make a second floor tile, so you can have more variation

I changed the cliff edge tiles so they're completely different. I also changed the spikes on the bottom to rocks.

I may be wrong, but I think by "moderate detailing on the ceiling" meant something like this:

Just to make things a bit less flat. This edit's super quick, sloppy and way too obviously tiled, but still... :)
I like the new ceiling. It's much better than the spikes, I think.

Yea, exactly what I meant, Trem. It almost feels like the ceiling has ambient light or something
Another couple of ideas:
-hue shift. Add some red to your darkest brown and a bit of yellow to the second lightest brwn. Even the slightest shift can give your tiles more pop and make 'em look sex
-Your rocks have a specific height they always reach up to. Maybe add one rock that is 1 pix higher or lower than the others for variation. You'll prolly need an extra floor tile if you do this though because it would make your tiling more obvious
It's looking good. Maybe it's time to start banging out some more tiles for other environments?

Updates:
-Hue shifting.
-Ambient Lighting.
-Trees. (Debatable)

Edit:
Big Update here, Finished the tiles though I'm still buffing em' out. Added rocks, and made a better Mock-Up. (I.M.O Anyway)

Nice. It's really progressing. A couple mroe things I noticed
-your right-side cliff tiles have a couple of tiling breaks. What I mean is when you stack them on top of eachother there's a noticable line where it looks like a rock's top got chopped off
-I'd make hte left-side cliff unique rather than a flip of the right-side
-good idea with the floor tile with the tiny pebble. Helps add variety
-it'd be interesting to see hte tree and rock with some tint to it. Maybe some green. I think they may bea bit too monotone at the moment
-i like what you did with the ambient lighting. You might want to try using the lightest purple more sparingly. It would make some parts of the ceiling feel more recessed giving the illusion of some depth
