Right now I am into The Weakerthans in a pretty huge way, I got to see them live twice in the last month or so and they are really incredible.  I got to see Anamanaguchi a month ago as well, which was pretty badass.  I would say that I'm generally into rock, but I've found rap, country, r&b, classical, jazz, blues, pretty much any genre has some really talented people that are great to listen to.  Some of my favorite all-time rock bands are:

A (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hx2UagBZaQY)
The Pillows (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JqkFeP4XwVw)
The Weakerthans (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A927zcSSw2s)
Thunderbirds Are Now! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3OsaBCxBIeo) (rolling stone top 40 under my friend Howard's mgmt!)
Portastatic/Superchunk (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m-vXTto-I8s)
At The Drive In/The Mars Volta (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xkWxpVDxEkE)
Ted Leo & The Pharmacists (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KYzpuRSslCk)

I also (surprise!) listen to a LOT of chiptunes.  Kohina and Nectarine radio and some 2 or 3 GB of game soundtracks from the last 20 years or so provide the bulk of this...fav game soundtracks:

Streets of Rage 2
Rocket Knight Adventures
Batman (NES)
Journey To Silius
Chrono-Trigger
Castlevania 4
Secret of Mana
Vortex
Megaman X
Shatterhand
Heavy Barrel
Life Force
Castlevania 3

Modern game soundtracks that I enjoy:

Katamari Damacy
Quake 2
Prince of Persia
Dynasty Warriors
Einhander
Hitman Blood Money
UT2004
Symphony of the Night
Warhawk
Wipeout 2097/XL
Silent Hill 2
Contra: Shattered Soldier
Command & Conquer: Generals

Not to mention chiptune albums like FX3, Out There, Pioneer, Power Supply, etc etc...

Sigur Ros is awesome!

My list (in no real order). I'm keeping it at the top 5 most recognizable, because I dont' think anyone will bother to read more than that.

Death Cab for Cutie
mewithoutYou
Copeland
Anberlin
Eisley

And a whoooole bunch of other bands that probably no one has ever heard of.

99% of the time I listen to "the pillows".
Then when I'm not, I either listen to videogame music/orchestrated videogame music (esp. the Mario & Zelda Big Band Live) or to the Smashing Pumpkins.

I listen to a lot of stuff. If it sounds good I'll listen to it, but I'm partial to Alternative Rock, Chip/Gamemusic, Orchestral/Symphony and Industrial. Not really narrowing it down :P

Here are "some" favorites, in no specifik order at all.

Seether
Sevendust
TMG (Tak Matsumoto Group)
Queens of the Stoneage
Black Mages
Creed
Kamelot
Arctic Monkeys
Onmyouza
Mind Bomb
Mew
Hanz Zimmer
The Brilliant Green
Beltaine
Camille
iMOGEN HEAP/Frou Frou
Jamiroquai
Agonoize
Andy McKee

Some specifik tracks i recommend:

Fury in my eyes - http://youtube.com/watch?v=9VjX2DflxFI - An awesome song from an awesome anime.
Libera Me from hell - http://youtube.com/watch?v=oAlztMvvNkk&feature=related - probably one of the best blends between classical music and hiphop.
Enemy - http://youtube.com/watch?v=uygz-deonGM
Fake it - http://youtube.com/watch?v=wWfP1RqGXyo&feature=related
Drifting - http://youtube.com/watch?v=Ddn4MGaS3N4 - This guy is just awesome!
Hanabi - http://youtube.com/watch?v=emrd1iMeaEg

I'm currently listening to the No More Heroes soundtrack. It has some really good songs, even though most are variations of the theme. As far as (new i.e. not old-school like NES- or SNES-era) game soundtracks go Okami, Viewtiful Joe and No More Heroes pretty much sums up the best game music. Traditional RPG music doesn't really count because it all sounds pretty much the same, and Hollywood does it better.

I'll listen to (almost) anything, but my favourite music overall would have to be prog rock.

My faves:
Rush - Three guys in their mid-50's who are still, from a technical standpoint, some of the best musicians ever (even if Geddy Lee's voice has suffered a bit over the years). The drummer, Neil Peart, won several "best rock drummer" awards until they put him on the judging staff so that he couldn't run anymore. I'm going to one of their concerts in July.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nhcM_hx0zxw

Boston - Had the best vocalist in all history until he killed himself last year. R.I.P. Brad Delp. Apparently Boston recently decided that they needed two more vocalists in an attempt to make up for the loss.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OaR2JeqxQDY&feature=related

Triumph - An 80's metal band. Not much to say about them, but this is an awesome song.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8cScouA7mdM

Kansas - My favourite American band. Sort of a happy medium between the previous three, but with more violin.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rBRj7AF8YjQ

...And a very special one:
The Lunateers - Eleven close friends of mine who are semi-officially the best new band in Ontario.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fvLB4CBXg_w
That song won the contest for them.

I listen to all kinds of music. I get more into video game music, rock, and some Japanese songs I hear.
Video games: I like orchestrated stuff, the songs from ICO and Shadow of the Colossus especially.
Rock: I've recently got my hands on a lot of Coheed and Cambria stuff... I really like it. Other songs like Sweet Child of Mine, Beast and the Harlot, Stairway to Heavan.

Some specifics as of late:
Six Organs of Admittance, Destroyer, David Bowie, The Velvet Underground, random bouts of chiptune listenings, ambient stuffs to sooth the soul (Brian Eno, Robert Fripp, Brian Eno & Robert Fripp) or torment it (Lustmord, Unquiet Void, some Coil, etc).

Though, really. I like a lot of everything.

You've got pretty good taste in hip hop Xion. A few other groups that you might dig are:
Eyedea
Food for Animals
Busdriver
Eligh
The Grouch
Immortal Technique
Pharaohe Monch

Of course it's highly possible that you may have heard of most of them. I tried leaving out some of the more obvious like; blackalicious, hieroglyphics, aesop rock, a tribe called quest, etc...

I mostly listen to techno/electronica (Jungle, Hardcore, Breakcore, Breaks, House, DnB, Dubstep and Techno), hip hop, and punk. Although, I listen to many more genres than those.

It's kind of pointless to list off the techno DJs I listen to, because about 95% of them don't actually have cds produced.

As far as punk goes: (in no particular order)
Toxic Narcotic
Anal Cunt
Charles Bronson
Against Me
Aus Rotten
Crass
Leftover Crack
Social Unrest
Fuck I'm Dead

Can't say that I know the other bands, but Nickelback never seemed very metal to me...

Weezer, Ween, The Decemberists, Architecture in Helsinki, the Pixies, Björk, They Might Be Giants, Lemon Demon, Punch Brothers, Belle & Sebastian, Barenaked Ladies, Ben Folds, The Microphones, The Rentals, and numerous others.
The Barenaked Ladies don't get half of the credit they deserve. Nice choice.

And Breaking Benjamin, Perfect Circle and Nickelback are rock, hard rock at most.

Cool. Now check out Sieges Even - Lifecycle, Psychotic Waltz - A Social Grace, Fates Warning - Perfect Symmetry  and Spiral Architect - A Sceptic's Universe

The bands mentioned above on Elwin's post might be some variation of 'metal' perhaps, but they're certainly not Heavy Metal and should be avoided by people that hold more than a cursory interest in that particular form. I'll try not to go overboard with the Heavy Metal Nerd Rage, but just saying...

Do tell what you thought of the stuff once you've let it sunk in.
You mean after the initial 'holy shit' factor has subsided? That's what I'm getting from this Spiral Architect album, even if the vocals are pretty familiar (I swear the vocalist could pass as Buddy Lackey, at least on certain tracks). Definitely the kind of stuff I'm looking for, so thank you.

The Sieges Even album is being really elusive atm. Still searching.

I like metal that doesn't involve lead singers who are in the process of regurgitating live squirrels whilst attempting to sing.

No genres attached, because I don't have the knowledge to fight genre ambiguity, but here is some crap I listen to:

Apocalyptica
Audioslave
Crossfade
Coheed & Cambria
Chevelle
Coldplay
Collective soul (Much love for that 'un)
Cake
Priestess
Rage Against the Machine
Rajaton (there's a curveball for you)
Tool
Wolfmother
Weezer

Honorable mention goes to the softer stuff (Dave matthews band, bare naked ladies, John Legend) and a bit of the hiphop/triphop/whathaveyou (gorillaz, mostly. Bits of Heiroglyphics sometimes. A choice few Gnarls Barkley.)

And doppleganger, there's seriously a band called anal cunt? Awesome.

Lately I've been listening to a lot of what could be called 'psychedelic folk,' I guess. Espers, Fursaxa, Six Organs of Admittance, L, and any kinda related stuff, really.
Speaking of which, anyone know of some particularly groovy old psyche stuff? Looking for some more drone-y, and chill and maybe not so frantic like some psyche rock can be.

Ulver: I actually have heard of these dudes. Listened to them for a good while, but I ended up enjoying the later stuff (less metal-y) a lot more. I'll have to check out the early stuff again.

This post will be long. I love my music and i have a lot of free time at the moment i should probably be using to improve my pixeling skeelz..but blargh. not feeling particularly artistic at the moment.

I see there's a lot of actual real honest-to-god metal floating around here:
This makes me very happy.
Now stuff that could be classified as metal in no particular order:

Let's just go ahead and get the METAL (I freely admit, it's *mostly* power metal.)  out of the way here, so you folks not interested in that can just scroll on down.

IRON MAIDEN - IF I actually need to describe or paraphrse this band, then you really ought to just crawl on out of that rock you've     been hiding under for the past 30 some odd years. Oh, and up the irons and such.
Standout albums:
Killers
Number of the beast
Powerslave
Dance of death (Shut up. this album kicks.)

DIO - Yes. I actually like Dio and in a completely unironic manner. Hold thy conugons high, my diminutive friend...
Standout Albums:
Holy Diver (how can anyone argue this isn't a classic?)
Last In Line
Killing the Dragon

RIOT - Riot Is a difficult band to categorize, simply because they've changed so much over the years. They were without a doubt one of the hardest rocking American bands to come out of the late 70's. Their album "rock city" is probably one of the most underappreciated of what i call "precursor metal" albums. Fast forward a few years and two vocalists. They produce and release the album "thundersteel" Which is, to simply put it - Fucking awesome.
Standout albums
Rock City
Narita
Thundersteel (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_6MD0W57QaA "FIght of fall"
the Privilidge of Power

AMON AMARTH - Vikings. Murder. Pillage. 8 foot tall swedes. Grunting, Blasphemy. Blazing fast guitars and double bass. The distilled essence of pagan rage!
Standouts:
With oden on our side
The Avenger

BLIND GUARDIAN - How do I love thee? Take queen; add metal. Well for the latter stuff anyway. BG's eary stuff is mostly run-of-the-mill speed metl, but instead of bein about satan it's about hobbits and tommyknockers.
The good:
A Night At the Opera
Imaginations From the Other Side
NIghtfall in Middle Earth (Because, dammit.)

ICED EARTH - I got into these guys way too late. I get to see them in september with the full glory of matt barlowe! Not much to say here, Other than "1776 is quite possibly the most epic metal instrumental of all time."
The Awesome:
Something wicked This Way Comes
Burnt Offerings
The Dark Saga
yeha. I pretty much hate tim "R1PP3R" owens. no offense.

DEMONS & WIZARDS - Iced earth and blind guardian, though i hear more blind guardian than iced earth here.
The good - Both albums. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XXzKKSOzzsk i've been told that  look a *LOT* like john schaeffer in this video.
The bad - there is no bad. Yes, I even liked that "wicked witch" song.

MASTODON - God. Mastodon is brutal and technical There is a grand total of ONE song i don't like by them. (sickleg) The name of the band is very indicative of the sound they produce. It's huge. It's intimidating and it has giant tusks. But it's not a stomp-a-thon, in that it's surprisingly intelligent music. They're also from atlanta, which is where I hail from.
Good - Pretty much everything. ESPECIALLY blood mountain. good lord. it's a masterpeice. I don't know how they're going to top it.

MOTORHEAD - This really needs no explanation. motorhead has been rocking hard for 40 some odd years now and seems to show no signs of stopping. I hate to reccomend it though, but you're much better off getting a best-of compilation than attempting to collect thier catalogue because..well. they haven't changed much over the years. Normally this bothers me, but they found a formula that works without getting into ac/dc levels of reptitiveness. Maybe it's because the albums are over before you realize it.
STANDOUTS:
Ace of Spades
(self titled)
Iron Fist
Bastards - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iyPRjf9Drh4

PANTERA - Okay, i'll openly admit that i actually prefer their glam stuff (1st 4 albums) over anything after that. With that being said, taky my opinions with a large grain of salt.
GET:
Power Metal
Metal Magic (And i *WISH* i were lying here...)
Cowboys From Hell

SLEEPYTIME GORILLA MUSEUM - I'm not sure if this counts as metal. I haven't gotten  *too* deep into this band's cataloge, as I only Have two albums by them. So i'll not offer any reccomendations other than this video - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ELyco68w5ks
The album "in Glorious Times" has quite a bit of "red" and "larks tongue in aspic" era King Crimson influence that should be apparent aside from the vocals. Not a bad thing at all.

TYR - more viking stuff. this is much more folk oriented and takes a lot of direct inflience from faroese folk music. They've been called "Progressive folk" but there's some metal there too.
Best album: Ragnarok http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=97lxvrKC-nI

THE SWORD - Think black sabbath on steroids, Or a really fast version of Sleep. And since sleep wrote such slow paced music, The sword's stuff is still on the slower side of thing. The album "age of winters" is better than "gods of the earth" many times over, but the latter is by no means a bad album. It lacks the Bone-crushing quality of the first, however.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

NOT METAL!

16 HORSEPOWER/WOVEN HAND - They're often called "gothabilly" but that's not quite right. 16 HP takes more american folk influence, and infueses it with a very dark spirituality. Woven hand is much more gloomy and experimental. In either case i've enver heard anything like them. If you ever get the opportunity to see woven hand live, do so. Edwards has a gigantic stage presence.
16 HP - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=THlgU-8dMYg "american Wheeze" and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HO9My5_H6dg "black soul Choir"
WH - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=shMF6ALAKZY "winer Shaker" (excuse the crappy video.)
I cannot reccomend these bands enough. i really can't.

ALICE IN CHAINS- Let it be known that i love early 90's seattle stuff. Some call it grunge but i call them stupid. Alice in chains is awesome.
BEST ALBUMS: Facelift, Jar of Flies

BORIS - Boris is impossible to categorize. They're a Japanese band that does mostly Drone and doom, But also branch out into noisy punklike rock songs that rock your nuts off, to nick-drake esque material. I don't speak japanese, so obviously the lyrical content is lost on me. This is actualy about the only japanese band i like right now. I have no idea why this is particularly.
BEST ALBUM FOR BALLS TO THE WALL RAWK: Heavy Rocks
BEST ALBUM FOR ATMOSPHEREIC NOISE: The Thing Which Solomon Overlooked Pt. 2

BUDGIE - I almost posted this in metal due to how raw, hard and influential their 1971 self titled album is. Metallica (the asshats they are) did a coer of Budgie's song "breadfan". you're more likely to have heard metallicas less-than-stellar version.

CANDLEMASS - YOU ARE BEEWWIIIIITCHED! Best album IMO is Tales of creation, with king of the grey isles trailing a close second.
It's Doom. Stright up. And occasionally a messiac marcolin.

CLUTCH - I don't even know what to say here. Clutch is one of the best bands of all time. Tons of energy, absolutely brillaint songwriting and influences from all over the board. If you don't know clutch youdon't know jack. Very talented musicians and just about the only band that actually causes me to want to get up and shake my ass. The best description i can give a a funk/blues sort of job, except with a distinct redneckish charm, but written by university of maryland graduates.
BEst album: Robot hive/exodus

Anyways i'm too tired to keep going and this post is way too long as it is. I hope it proves useful for somebody maybe looking for something new.

But yeah. I've got like 50 gigs of music that i listen to pretty regularly, so if anyone's interested in sharing, feel free to hit me up.

Well, atm, my playlist has frequently contained these bands:

-Rise Against
-Spoon
-Brand New
-Minus The Bear
-The Shins (love 'em)
-Band of Horses

I also like(in no particular order) Pearl Jam, The Decemberists, early Sonic Youth, Matchbox 20, The Stills, The Rakes, Say Hi (formerly Say Hi To Your Mom), Lostprophets,  Idlewild (<3), Parokya ni Edgar, Eraserheads, early Rivermaya, Kamikazeeetc, etc.

I'm not exactly an active fan, as in, I don't go to concerts, mostly because they never come to the Philippines anyway. I've been to a Kamikazee concert a few years ago, they were vucken hyper. I loved it.

Any new band suggestions?  :D

EDIT:
Also, agreeing with Xion on Grandaddy and Billy Talent.

...really though, do you actually think you'd be ridiculed for video game music on a pixel art forum?

My current #1 favourite band is MGMT (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bIEOZCcaXzE). I'm also diggin' Justice (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6zo1-XlazvY).

Various other favourites include:
Lupe Fiasco
Jimi Hendrix
The Strokes
The White Stripes
Interpol
Led Zeppelin
N.E.R.D.
Gorillaz
Muse
The Hives
The Flaming Lips
Kings Of Leon
Daft Punk

and so on and so forth.

People will ridicule anything if they think they can get away with it. Thankfully, a person doesn't get away with it very often without bringing negative attention to themselves. Sharing personal information is even worse.

Actually, if you had just posted the game music instead of saying you're afraid to get ridiculed, you would have been less ridiculed then you are now.

everyone is entitled to their own musical preferences, seems a little immature to not post because your afraid of possible confrontation.  Plus you bring a lot of negative attention to yourself.

now please don't derail this anymore.

I got back from paganfest last night, and i'm still hurting from it.

The bands that played were all completely awesome.
VIKING METAL!

The opening act Was ELUVEITIE (say it - EL-OH-VAY-TEE):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HtdvoKpLevc
Let it be known that they have the goddamn craziest flute player of al time. Everybody in this band is at least 6 feet tall. Even the chick.

Coming directly after them, The more more melodic TYR.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=97lxvrKC-nI (Orumun Langi. It's in faroese so don't try to understand it.)
Now everybody in tTHIS band was like Nine feet tall. I exaggerate but they're some huge dudes and would NOT want to have to meet them in a back alley. Anyone who says these guys suck should probably just go jump off a cliff.

Third in the lineup was TURISAS
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HrQxr-8neyo (BATTLE METAL!)
These guys stole the entire show. The frontman is a real enterainer, and they know how to get the crowd to move.
Plus to go up on stage in war paint and leather and fur armor which is ten kinds of awesome.
Unlike the previous two bands these folks were actually kind of tiny and it was great.

THe Headlining act - ENSIFERUM
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cs8giIGt1jE
At this point i was pretty well smashed. NOt alcohol, but after three hours of vikings smashing your face in, ensiferum was almost too much for me.
Back with the giant norsemen. The lead singer, i swear does not age. he looked like an overgrown 15 year old boy.

I still hurt from the experience. I did get to see some pretentious scenester type kid git his ass beat by a bunch of beardly monsters in a mosh pit that had formed. Sorry, but you don't try to be fashionable in an environment that is populated by overweight muscleheads with a norse fixation. you're pretty much asking to be tossed unceremoniously about, and you ESPECIALLY don't try to do the OMG HARDK0R3" bullshit dnacing when everyone is out for blood. it's just foolish. But he got what he had comin'.

I just listened to the self-titled Woven Hand today. Pretty cool stuff!
Good to know at least somebody is listening to my prattling on :)

well, once I've used to be really orthodox when it came to music in general and my musical tastes were well-established. this was when I was listening to Heavy Metal. however, it became boring. then I went through pretty much everything, broadening my musical tastes to be large in scope. I ain't restricting myself to any particular genre.

anyway, now I'm reviving my old memories with The Crystal Method. also recently, I got enchanted by some light chilling rock in the form of MGMT -- yes, it's *just* indie, but those guys are good.

I like a lot of different, weird music.

BOREDOMS -- A marvelous fusion of tribal drumming and sounds that you'd swear were made by an alien spacecraft traveling through the minds of the gods.  "Super Going" from the album "Super ae" is a great song to check out, as is the entirety of the album "Vision Creation Newsun"

the rest are in no particular order

GREAT LAKE SWIMMERS -- Thoughtful songs sung by a haunting voice with a backing band of folk musicians.  Their albums are recorded in resonant natural spaces, such as a grain silo or an old town hall, creating a rich atmosphere.  The songs are all great, with masterful lyrics.

PANDA BEAR -- His "Person Pitch" album is like a lesson in chilling out.  A great example of how to use samples so that the end result doesn't sound too sampled.  And his heavily reverb'd and multi-tracked beach-boys-esque voice adds to the chill-factor.

YES -- Some of their songs are pretty cheesy but on the whole Yes is a group of remarkable musicians.  The compositions are all multi-layered, richly detailed and completely engrossing.  Great music to get lost in.

CHRISTOPHER WILLITS -- Collages of sound are made by Willits by slicing up guitar tracks and re-arranging them into sparkling melodies in which the clips of sound where the tracks are cut become tiny flecks of rhythmic percussion.  Then he layers on breathy vocals with electric harmonies, smooth syrupy horns and tight drumming to create music that is sugary like candy or silky like milk.

ERIC WHITACRE -- Speaking of electric harmonies, if you want to see Jesus's eyes, go listen to "Lux Aurumque" from the "Cloudburst" album.  So many notes are stacked on top of one another in Whitacre's a cappela choral works that each note blends into the next until it is like the sonic equivalent of a sunbeam that can be split into a spectrum of colors.  So amazing are these chords that they are commonly referred to as "Whitacre chords".

VALGEIR SIGURDSSON -- Bjork's producer has an album out called "Ekvilibrium" and on it is some amazing music.  "Focal Point" has sounds that almost remind you of something you heard once, but most of them sound like the sonic discharges of a machine made out of glass and polished marble.  "Equilibrium is Restored", which puts the listener into an immediate state of calm, sounds like a children's toy falling down a set of stairs in an underwater house.  "Before Nine" includes some of the most heart-wrenching cello music imaginable, and "Kin" makes you feel both intangible and infinite.

"America's Got Talent" was probably the only sort of reality/stage performance/audition show I ever actually bothered watching, and yes, Cas Haley is awesome. Although that ventriloquist still deserved to win.

I never really payed much attention to them back when they were really big, but one of my favourite radio stations started playing the Offspring on a regular basis a little while ago (mostly "Come Out and Play") and I'm starting to wonder why I didn't listen to them more before.

Does anyone here listen to Focus? They're pretty awesome.

Do tell what you thought of the stuff once you've let it sunk in.
Well, I listened to 82.2% of the Sieges Even album, it seems about as far as it's gonna get. :( Besides the jumpiness due to incompletion it's super, really inspiring stuff. Also I take back my comment regarding Spiral Architect's vocals, I was just being a dumbass. Fountainhead and Conjuring Collapse are the best.

Also I picked up a few others since my last post, Cynic, Demilich, Athiest, Gorguts, Wintersun, couple others.

Wintersun aren't up to the rest of that lineup you mentioned.

If you need the last two tracks of the Sieges Even record uploaded I can give them to you. It's a shame to not listen to 'Straggler from Atlantis' as it is probably the most epic and emotional track on the record. Yes, epic, emotional technothrash. Worth it.

Cynic are widely celebrated for 'Focus', and I like it alright too. Perhaps you'd do well to check out their demos too.
Demilich are godly.
Atheist, especially 'Unquestionable Presence' rip.
Gorguts, be sure to withstand the weirdness of 'Obscura', it's worth it.

There is no shame in Coldplay. There's a handful of pop music that's well worth listening to and they lead the pack. ;D

That seems to be the general consensus. I do love Elements lots, though.

First album I heard from them actually. I'm already into that sort of thing but it's refreshing to hear it in a metal context.

I forgot to mention Liquid Tension Experiment.  ::)

EDIT: Had a chance to listen to Rise and Fall, Rage and Grace by The Offspring. Some really great songs on there, especially "You're Gonna Go Far, Kid", "Hammerhead", "Kristy, Are You Doing Okay?", and "Shit is vucked Up" which are my favorites.

Been listening alot more to House and Electro recently.
Such as Justice, ze electro duo from France.
I recently saw em live aswell, they're really awesome.
Also been listening alot more Daft Punk lately.
I've actually been trying to make some House and Electro myself. And some things sound pretty alright if ye ask me. :D.

My playlist now is mostly Sigh (Imaginary Sonicscapes) and Holy Terror (Mind Wars, Terror and Submission). Also a lot of okay death metal like Pestilence, Bolt Thrower, etc. And I've been listening to Obscura lots and it gets better every listen. :hehe: Been hunting for more like it to no avail.

Excellent on Sigh and Holy Terror. Bolt Thrower are a lot more than just mediocre for me. They're one of the best. Pestilence are second-rate at best. I am glad to see your tastes grow in the right directions though. The esoteric Heavy Metal has much to offer you.

Obscura ain't Gorguts' best album imo. they're probably the coolest thing to come out of quebec though. Luc Lemar's new band 'Negativa' is really bad also which I kind of expected.
artists im listening to right now are Frank Zappa, Captain Beefheart, Allan Holdsworth, Al Di Meola, and George Duke.

Negativa are pretty excellent. Obscura is better than 'From Wisdom to Hate' which is pretty great and quite better than the first two Roadrunner Generic Death Metal Also-rans. Naturally, the best thing out of Quebec was and forever will be, Voivod.

alright. i don't listen to or like a lot of metal. i've seen voivod on much music and shit and didnt see what stood out aboot them.
i dont see how negativa has anything going for it without any memorable songs. the idea of them being avant-garde is laughable

If you don't listen to or like a lot of metal then I guess we won't speak the same language as I love Heavy Metal above almost all. It's certainly up there with cute kittens, barbarians and robots for me. It's understandable that you don't get Voivod, though, they're not an easy band to get. And Negativa, as well as Gorguts are not meant to be initially catchy so I don't know what you were searching for there. These things reward deeper listens.

i liked and played technical death metal in high school and i dont think its fair to assume i dont "get" negativa just because i found it unenjoyable.
i think all music serves an important perpose because there's people who wanna hear that stuff. as for me i like orchestral music.

king diamond is probably my favourite heavy metal band though. the entertainment value of a 40 year old guy singing in falsetto aboot ghosts is immeasurable.

i also like that jingle bells parody aboot batman

Yeah it's pretty clear for me that you and I won't understand each other if the way you enjoy King Diamond is through irony. Negativa aren't technical death metal so it's understandable that if you approach them from that point of view they will not deliver.

I guess I'll list mine, too, since I see these absent from the list (most of 'em, at least.)
Marvin Gaye (http://youtube.com/watch?v=U9BA6fFGMjI) -Beautiful Song. 'nuff said.
Barry White (http://youtube.com/watch?v=zNWNYxNJV6w&feature=related) -This is, in my honest opinion, the best song ever recorded.
The Isley Brothers (http://youtube.com/watch?v=glhdcJ7K3XM) -I can't imagine how many of us were conceived to this song, but I guarantee my children will be.
Teddy Pendergrass (http://youtube.com/watch?v=T1uv-w5quH4) -I played this at work once over the speaker system, since I always make mixes of great soul music to play at the restaurant I'm manager at, and I was shocked at the lyrics (I had just got the album that day) but I enjoyed it. Surprisingly, nobody asked me to turn it off.

Michael Jackson (http://youtube.com/watch?v=Uqxo1SKB0z8) -If you don't like the "Thriller" album, you must be deaf. Actually, even deaf people could enjoy Michael Jackson, so you must just not like good music.

GZA (http://youtube.com/watch?v=L6_6E0T3wss) -NSFW. The Wu-Tang only managed to record one decent album (36 Chambers), and to be honest, I prefer GZA's album "Liquid Swords." The whole album is solid, and eventually led me to see the movie "Shogun Assassin." See that movie. See it.
Kool Keith (http://youtube.com/watch?v=gM7nOd-xG60) -NSFW, but I recommend listening to this album at some point, if not for the great rapping, simply for the fact that Kool Keith is the most outrageous rapper ever. If you don't believe me, check out the lyrics: Once again, NSFW (http://www.hhdb.com/lyrics/1135/Sex-Style-Lyrics/)
Clipse (http://youtube.com/watch?v=1MXJ3btDJu8) -Also NSFW. I don't listen to mainstream rap that much, but I couldn't pass up Clipse. They didn't achieve much commercial success, but I think they're the best rap group ever. You'd think that hearing songs about selling cocaine, wearing cool shoes, and drinking kool-aid would get old, but they dont.
Lil Wayne (http://youtube.com/watch?v=lgFcZEv2AiI) -NSFW. I think that if Lil Wayne sat in a recording booth for a year, and recorded twenty songs every day, maybe 10 of them in total would be decent. Lil Wayne is really the only mainstream rapper that I listen to. If you want to listen to Lil Wayne, I only reccomend getting The Drought 3 (a mixtape, free online) and The Carter III (His newest album, surprisingly decent. Check out "A Millie" if you have subs.)
A Tribe Called Quest (http://youtube.com/watch?v=ubdfRHBtHcQ) -NSFW. Awesome album, awesome song. I still haven't figured out why Q-tip decided to just repeat his first verse instead of making a second one, but whatever. Still a great song, and a great message.

The Presidents of the United States of America (http://youtube.com/watch?v=19McuaPKjI8&feature=related) -I'm sure you've all heard this song. This whole album (self-titled) is amazing, seriously. If you like this song, I recommend getting the entire album, it's just as good.
Primus (http://youtube.com/watch?v=lhnEkfX-nKQ) -Oh jeez, Primus. This is one of my favorite songs by them. In middle school, I bought all of their albums, and I love every one. As far as I remember this is SFW, but if you don't wanna risk it, I'd wait, because I'm not 100% on that. Oh, and there will never be a better bassist than Les Claypool.

El Guincho (http://youtube.com/watch?v=bkQ0qZvP75Y) -I'm not a big fan of any Indie music, but El Guincho is awesome. My friend, who likes Animal Collective, and Sonic Youth, and basically anyone who performed at the Pitchfork Music Festival, described El Guinch is the spanish Animal Collective. I think this is just one guy who has random Latin percussion instruments and a sampler, and manages to make albums. It's relaxing to listen to.

That's about all I can think of. I'll edit accordingly, but whatever.

Which Gorguts album were you referring to that's better than Obscura? I've heard Erosion of Sanity in it's entirety and it's pretty not great. I've only heard a few tracks off of From Wisdom to Hate, I guess I should get that too. Obscura's one of the better albums I've ever heard so I figure it'd be tough to top. :wah:
