I have one!!!! And I love it!
Hopefully sooner than later homebrew stuff will be possible on the DS, then some pixeltool might actually emerge.

Btw. the colors should be 15 bit (5 bits per channel) :P

:) i'd love to have such an application for it
i think it's bound to come up sooner or later, given the abilities of the touchscreen + pen it pretty much suggests itself.

and oh, hey could anybody give me some pointers to some good ds games? i'm not reading any kind of gaming news or reviews, so i'm not really in the know :)

>_< Doh!

Well, then again, I don't exactly know much about devolopement...

It's going to be pretty hard to make a homebrew one. Unless it was on a GBA flashcart.

and some good games:

Meteos (great puzzler)
Mario 64 DS (you know)
Nintendogs (dog simulater, you could interact, and tell your dog to do stuff) is coming out pretty soon.
Kirby Canvas Curse (guide kirby using rainbow trails. Pretty long I think)
You could import Band Brothers. It's a band simulation game, I think. You could compose your own songs and play with other people.
I'll add more when I think of some.

I have Mario 64 DS and Touch! Kirby (japanese verison of canvas course) Its a nice game, took me like 1 and a half week to finish, but there is plenty of stuff to unlock left.
I will get Meteos when it comes out here. Already played Jap version of Nintendogs. Its nice, but nothing i would buy. I hope Advance Wars DS will be cool!

PacPix if you're eager to draw out pacmen and nibble those ghosts!
WarioWare Touched is also endless hours of fun. I've overplayed the 2-player ping-pong with L and R triggers.
I'm knee deep in puzzles likes Meteos and Zookeeper (the animal Bejeweled where you lose and get insulted by your boss), and for endless levels, I picked up Yoshi Touch and Go (it's too cute).

Lots of interesting titles coming out soon as well (Castlevania, Another Code...).

It's funny that you mention the pixel painter DS thing... A friend of mine was thinking the same thing a few months ago :D

All I've heard: the system's good and all, and has a great deal of potential, but most of the notable games seem to be Nintendo's own titles. Is development hardware (flash cartridge type stuff) readily accessible yet? I'm wondering how/if/when a pixel art app could appear.

Just to reflect on systems of the past, It almost seems tacky to use words like Touch with their titles. It's like every other game being a 'Super-something or other on the SNES. Same with the blank-64 games. More amusing than anything else, since it used to conceal the poorness of some titles trying to go along with the naming theme.

It's gimmicky, but not in the same sense that virtualboy was, it's way better than that, but it remains to be seen what titles start coming out and which ones utilize more of the system's abilities.

I wouldn't write off VirtualBoy as gimmicky. I played one for the first time this year and wow, it's an amazing little system. Basically instead of a resolution of 256x256, it's 256x256x256, meaning you can use any of 256 planes of distance from the camera. The Wario game especially was amazing.

DS dev has a thing called PassMe which you stick in the DS slot and it will load DS content from a flash cart in the GBA slot. So yeah, essentially they have a working flashcart system for DS. The problem is that unlike GBA, no dev tools or docs were ever leaked to the net (with GBA they were leaked before GBA was even out!) so coders have had to come up with everything from scratch and reverse engineer to get things working. But they have progressed and there are a few demos being worked on now, although I doubt the scene will ever be as big as GBAdev was.

virtual might have been smart, but it gave people headaches. Nintendo was wrong to go after that so fervently.

Who can blame Nintendo for pushing the Virtual Boy? I liked it when I played it, but I also like color.

it isn't just the corpsepaint. It's the posture and clothing. That's a dead-ringer for Abbath, good job. Ptoing told me about the game you're making, sounds hilarous.

Erm, sorry to say but the touch screen and stylus arnt as good as you think.  In the DS game Polarium if you get a high score you can pixel in an icon for your high score.  You were suposed to just draw a face but, I actualy drew some stuff.  It was very very very frustrating, pixels randomly appearing, lines off and many other problems.  Yet I did it, it was very frustrating but I did it.  Its posible yet it took me 15 mins to draw a black and white 16 x 16 character.  That was when I knew what I was drawing.
Dont mock my spelling, spell check takes too long on dial up.

Sure they're good. And.. why Polarium? Try it with the... er... .. Pictochat! That's it. Sure, it's incredibly hard to be precise without zooming, but other than that, I found it works excellently. No random pixels, smooth lines and all. Just gotta remember to not draw at weird angles like I do on a paper.. makes pixels appear where I'm not expecting them...

Polarium gives you a very small area that has been zoomed in.  Its like 17 x 17 or sum10.  1x1 bigger than my char.  I dunno mabye its just the game.

Man, I'm so dissappointed in the DS. :(

I've heard people say that it's not really meant to be an adventure type console, and that the touch screen is not really supposed to be used for anything more than 3 minute sessions of (ultimately) boring play. Well, I think that if that's what Nintendo is doing, then they're in the wrong, since the stylus can act just like a mouse, and this opens up a whole new slew of gaming ideas that don't really seem to be opening up to the minds of the creators.

First person shooters with better control setups than Metroid Prime: Hunters, and Goldeneye: Rogue Agent are possible, although the tiny resolution and lackluster 3D prevent it from dong as good as the PSP probably could even without the intuitive touch screen.  First person adventure games (I'm looking square at Bethesda here) could have so many new features (directional attacking, first person based puzzles, runic magic, to name a very few), sort of like Lost in Blue might be doing. Racing games could do a neat, although not possibly the best, steering wheel and/or clutch mechanism, or even something as creatively simple as a real time strategy game could be rather easily implemented.

There are also a ton of new app type things that could be opened up with the use of the GBA slot. The pixel program would be great, and especially so if they did something to expand upon PictoChat to allow, for instance, avatars and online WiFi conversations from just about anywhere (OK, so it'd be more like MSN on a WiFi connection than PictoChat, heh). Or make a browser type app to browse the web, since the DS is going online soon (yay!). The Nintendo Play-Yan is a neat idea, and seems to be a pretty handy-dandy little mpeg-4 and mp3 playback unit -- along with other tiny little games -- for those of you who don't know about it, although video is kind of lacking from what I can tell because of the smaller screen size. That and I'd rather have my handy-dandy 20GB MP3 player for music, anyway. :)

Developing for a system with such an unprecedented amount of potential would really be a lot of fun, and I'd absolutely love to get my hands on a Dev-Kit to really start working on something, but I guess Nintendo's being rather sticky about this one... real shame, too.

As for games, Kirby is a good game, sort of. To be honest, I got bored rather quickly. Probably only about halfway through the game and I didn't really want to keep going, although it really does begin to take use of the touch screen for a new type of gameplay when compared to the other games out.

Yoshi's Touch & Go seems to be more of a 3 minute coffee break style game, but I think that'd require actually wanting to look forward to playing it when you did get a break. The first time I played it, I thought it was neat. I hoped there was more to it, but the next 3 and 4 times I played it, there just wasn't. Every couple days I pick it up, thinking if I just sat back and ignored the fact that it's not an adventure meant to be played for hours at a time game or to just put aside my previous feelings about it, I'd like it, but so far, even after opening everything up and exploring the new modes, it's still boring as all hell.

I only ever got to play Polaris once, and it seemed to be fun. Maybe not super great, "OMG I Have to play again and again!!" type fun, but entertaining for the few minutes it lasted, heh. I've never played Meteos, so I have no idea what that's like, although I heard it really is a lot of fun if you're into the Tetris Attack style puzzlegames with a twist.

Um, Unless you really like the Yoshi's Touch & Go Coffee Break style gameplay (to reiterate, just a few minutes at a time), I wouldn't recommend Feel the Magic: XX/XY or, for that matter, the better Wario Ware. I mean, they both have their moments where they're fun, but minigame after minigame.... so many of them were so lackluster that of the few hundred there, I probably only play 5 or 6 often, and even then, the minigames on Super Mario 64 DS are more fun. :)

In my opinion, the best game here is Super Mario 64 DS. Oh, and Metroid Prime: Hunters Demo... The Mario is just the same Mario as the 64, only with a few more things, like controlling Luigi, or Yoshi, or Wario, and minigames, and more stars. Not a super duper gotta get it type game, but still good.

From what I can gather, those are the best games out. I haven't tried the Need for Speed or whatever other game it was, or Pac-Pix, or really, any of the others. GoldenEye: Rogue Agent and Madden NFL 209999 were only decent. Not super great, and nothing really worth getting unless you really wanted a First person shooter or a football game, respectively, for your portable system.

There is quite a lineup of games coming out soon that look to be more interesting. Nintendogs, for instance, or even Snowboard Kids DS (I loved the original, I don't care what people say, heh). Slime Mori Mori Dragon Quest 2 (heh, no, really, that's the name. I'm not advertising my name, hehe) might be alright along with Lunar: Dragon Song if you want some RPG stuff going on.

Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell Chaos Theory DS is probably one of those games I wouldn't get, 'cause I never found the first ones entertaining, fun, or interesting at all. There are plenty of other games at least partially worthy of note that I can remember noted for future release; Bust-A-Move DS, Mario Kart DS, Animal Crossing DS, Advance Wars DS, and Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow.

And, um... Yeah, sorry for being so friggin' verbose. I get that way every now and then, y'know.

The homebrew scene for the DS has already made some progress.  I think they're still using the GBA carts to run the programs, but they've gotten full control of the touch screen and the mic.  In fact, the only thing that hasn't been welll-documented is network communication, which few people got working on the GBA too.

http://www.thepernproject.com has a few tutorials in this regard.

Well I doubt Lucasarts would do that (I wanna play Loom again!) but there's this in the meantime (http://nintendo-ds.dcemu.co.uk/scummvmds.shtml). An emulator for the DS to play those games \o/ and apparently uses the stylus too. Now...If only I had a flashcart...

Holy shit! Fucking awesome! God, I love emulators so much! ;D ;D ;D

It's stuff like this that makes me think that Sony could sell a shitload of PSPs by secretly financing a bunch of nintendo emulator projects for PSP. The emulators for GBA and DS are cool, but if your a pixel perfectionist-type then it just ain't the same unless you can play a SNES or NES rom without a squashed screen that dicks up the art. The PSP is also perfect in that it's dead simple to hook up to a computer, or at least that's what all the stories about people putting porn on their PSPs have lead me to believe.

I was sitting in the car driving home from the shore from a long day of rough tubing and we started conversing about the DS and good games they could make.  It was like a think tank.

(Note: Some of these ideas may have been said yet, I don’t care)
(Note2: We started thinking if they brought over a Super Mario 64+ from N64 what other games should they bring?)

StarCraft  : think about it, they could control it the same way they did on pc, with just a point and click screen, it would be perfect.  Wireless multiplayer up to 8 people.  2 cartridge game, 1st one has single player 2nd has multiplayer, just so Brood War items can be put in.

Warcraft : ^^ pretty much same as above.

StarFox 64 : picture this if any of you remember the Starfox 64 level where you protect the pyramid and that giant ship comes in and releases all those little fighter ships and it’s a huge war?  Just picture a gigantic war.  Two teams the Fox team and the Andross team.  You just have a huge war.  You wouldn’t even need the touch screen to play.  Use the d pad for aiming and A to shoot B for bombs and L and R for rolls.

Any point and click game : Myst, Syberia, CSI: Dark Motives… ECT

They could probably bring back any N64 game.  Heck I would buy it cept Crusin USA, fun at the time just you couldn’t turn around.
…er I’m too tired to think of the others, I’ll see em tomorrow and we shall roast up some more.

This is due to the fact that Nintendo always has been very protective of their hardware details and devkits. To this day, you CANNOT get a devkit without providing a list of previously published games, evidence of the security of your facilities, proof of a large staff and a large cash investment. Almost all of what could be called 'indie' development on Nintendo consoles is entirely the result of reverse engineering.

It's a shame. If Nintendo was more open.. offered people training courses (hey, there's a way they could make some cash!), and made the darn thing accessible, they'd be more successful overall. Licensing might be there to 'safegaurd', but it tends to safegaurd Nintendo more than it does the public. That seal of quality isnt what it used to be! Bad games still get made, but the license stifles competition, or in this case, an actual presence of varied titles for a still young system...

Anychance I can still buy a GameShark?  Ive checked all stores near my home, (25 mile radius) none have it.  I rather not use EBAY because I dont have the patience to wait for them to ship it to me.  EBAY takes to long.  Is there an online store that would have it?  Where i can get next day shipping?  Because im to lazy to earn the cheats in Starcraft 64 by beating the really long missions.  Sigh...
