Since I don't consider myself an artist, I created a little prototype to make art through the power of chaos and evolution. I started a thread on this here:
http://www.retroremakes.com/forum2/showthread.php?t=10804 (http://www.retroremakes.com/forum2/showthread.php?t=10804)
It's great for small 2 colour symmetrical sprites. And my avatar is also completely created with this tool. :)
Don't kill me! ;D
-
Why would we hate you for this? It's pretty damn cool!
-
It's non-art! ;) hehe..!
-
That's actually really awesome .
I like 32 best, personally. Reminds me of Pan. ;)
(Oop, I just realized the numbers on the sheets are the same, so that's an utterly useless sentence)
-
Cheers. It's also useful to evolve a sprite to come up with new variations.. Try it. :)
-
That save-destination character limit is brutal when trying to save in My Documents :(.
-
awesome! i love it, great work :)
-
Ah sorry about that. Just save the files in a new folder of your main drive.. :)
-
I didn't realise how long I've been waiting for somebody to invent a machine to do all my drawing for me. :D

Getting it to output asymmetrical stuff is kind of painful, but trying to sort out the chaos brought some stuff I probably wouldn't have come up with all by myself:

The symmetrical stuff is really easy and fun, though. Thanks for this thing, happymonster.
-
Looks like a new set of smiley's there.. ;)
-
This is just fantastic. Really cool stuff. :y:
-
hey. you're like the pixeled rosarchs. someone should photoshop one of those over rosarch's face.
-
Who's rosarchs? ???
-
oops, meant Rosarch. you know, from watchmen?
http://www.tocadocoelho.blogger.com.br/watchmen_g.jpg here's a pic.
Rosarch is that test where they show you a random simetrical blotch of ink and you make something out of it.
This guy wears a continuously changing version of one of those as a mask. dont ask me how he can still see.
-
This is awesome indeed, happymonster. I can't wait to lose a few hours to it.
That's Rorschach, Conceit.
-
Hehe, I knew I had seen that avatar before. ;) (referring to happymonsters avvy)
-
Cheers!
Yeah, the assymetrical stuff seems a lot harder to do.
-
I can't believe how readable every combination is. I have yet to come across something that looks like noise. I almost feel obsolete if pixel art is this easy to make.
-
I think it's due to the fact that at 16 x 16 with horizontal symmetry there are a lot less possibilities compared to 32 x 32 or bigger. Therefore pixels seem to form in easy to see patterns quite often.

sorry for grave digging this post but the link has died and I was curious to know where I could find this program again. I tried contacting Happymonster a couple days ago but he hasn't responded.
So yeah, does anyone know where this could be found?
-
I pm'd him a few months ago and he gave me a link. Not sure about his current bandwidth constraints so here's a mirror. (http://www.lolipopsicle.com/linky/Rest.zip)

Oh, this is marvellous for inspiring ideas for just about anything. Bravo.
I didn't scan it, though... so if there are viruses attached, I suppose we will all hate you. I only wonder that because there was no QUIT button that I could see on the application, and I had to force-quit it via task manager. Anyone else find a regular quit button?
-
There isn't a quit button and you can't push the X button but if you hit ESC it will close for you.
-
Don't worry, I took a look at the source, there are no viruses. :P
-
XD
Thanks for the reassurance - and the esc key. Is funny, after all these years away from early games where I'd ctrl-q alt-q ctrl-c alt-c ctrl-alt-q ctrl-esc or just plain esc to quit instead of finding a menu, the basics eluded me.
-
Sorry for resurrecting this post, but I felt it would be best to keep it here for continuity.
The retro remakes link above is dead and I'd really like to try this. Does any one have an update link, or can anyone mirror the file?
Thanks

Maybe a mod should update the first post? seems a few people have been asking for it.

not sure how long Mega Upload hold files but here you go:
Happy monster's glorious tool of randomly placed squares. (http://www.megaupload.com/?d=G76QQ970)
