Title: Longship
Post by: I Am Uh on February 17, 2008, 09:49:14 am
This is a W.I.P I've had for a while now, just started working on it again. Its a longship, and I'd like some advice on maybe where I should go from here since I'm just completely clueless. As always crits are more than welcome.

Hmm, it looks good so far. I'm thinking it could use a horizon and sky though to finish it off.

Thanks  Guys, U'mm yeah I planned on making a horizon and yes Adarias I've seen the thread.... (Come to think of it, thats probably where I got the original idea.)

Well here's a small Update.

I took the A.A a bit further.
I also added a horizon line, not sure I'm satisfied with where it's at though. Might change it.

The top sail hole looks irregular since it should be light blue like the sky, since the horizon is lower then the top sail hole.

I thought the boat looked really odd like half of it was in a different view than the other half. So i did a quick edit to make it look like it was all in the same perspective.  Idk if it is something you want to change because of this pieces cartoony style but if it is this might help.

Thanks Mattpk, I probably would've never spotted that otherwise.
Well Phlox, the original idea was to make the boat to be hitting the waves at an angle, so that it appeared slightly curved. I'm thinking about possibly making a large wave behind it. (If I can figure out what it supposed look like... Lol.)

The sail looks like we're getting the head-on view, while the boat is unmistakably at an angle (which I guess is fine, it doesn't have to face the same way, just though it might look better if it did).  Your water looks pointy and sharp, I'd try to make it seem a little more fluid.
Oh, and add vikings.  Wonderful, bearded, historically incorrect, possibly anachronistic vikings.

Viking ships were made of planks whereas the way you have shaded it suggests its made of something else. They also had a dragon on the front and that mast looks really thick. Maybe get a reference.

Cool boat with an awesome sail. But yeah, it should be angled. Also I think the mast of the boat would be longer and further out of the water at an angle (it's sort of 90º to the center line at the bottom of the boat.)

Check out some of these longboats, the mast is curvier and has a masthead:

Longboat is long...

Thanks for everyone's comments. I tried to fix the sail and make it more angled. (Tell me if it still doesn't look right.) As far as the wooden planks on the boat go Sharprm, I'm not sure if they work out the way they should.

Edit, I've never really worked with water much so I'm gonna' need some help here.

Already looking ten times awesomer!  ;D

As for water, your best bet is just to look at normal water and practice with that. Also check the way the shadows and ocean spray in the water are done in the thread linked to earlier, or experiment a bit and do your own thing.

I've decided I don't want to destroy my decent ship with my horrible water. :P So I think this is gonna be my final version unless you think there's anything else that needs to be done. 15 Colors Inc. transparency
