Post by: diefox on January 17, 2008, 03:50:03 pm
Hi guys, it's been such a long time since I last posted anything in here, so here it is:

32 colors, i think...

Not much time to describe it right now, it was made for the weekly challenge at pixeljoint, but i was too late to submit it.

C&C please ^^

i think this has reasonable potential. there are some aspects of it that i am drawn to. but at the moment its very busy and confusing. I can't tell who's on what teams etc. and the gui is quite brash. perhaps remove it and concentrate on the characters first.

funny, those were my thoughts exactly when playing the game...

You've misspelled tackle. You wrote taclke. Maybe I'm wrong though, maybe taclke is a real move. I've owned the game since two christmases ago and still haven't opened it :\.
Get rid of the dithering, it's a mix of annoying and distracting. Maybe getting rid of the GUI will allow you to focus on the characters and monsters.

I think everythings a bit too contrasting, and with it being a bit busy it's hard to tell where to look, whats what etc.. I personally would try to seperate the interface (menu displays) from the playing area, tone down the blacks and bring the floor closer to the character so they feel on the same level. Im getting a vibe they're floating even with the obvious shadows underneath.

From this I'd work on the characters some more, they're coming across as a bit flat, I feel they could be more well defined, maybe the palette could be adjusted somewhat to your shading makes more of an effect to the depths.

well just some opinions, keep this up its got potential. I'd hate it to just be left.

Edit - Yea you're right looks like I swung too far the opposite way there, maybe the shadows are too much of a jump then?

Terley while I respect your opinions I must voice concern over the notion of plastering the characters into the background, which your edit does quite well.  Surely there are ways to address the ground plane without sacrificing depth of forms.

Flawed, but still better than mine..

I should have spent more time on mine. Ah, not important.
Some targeting lines would probably help out both.

MrMister, I know you don't mean anything ill, but it's generally not good to revive old threads (10 days is kinda old, yeh?) or to post your own art in another person's thread when it's not part of a critique.

I dunno, for the style it went for it was pretty effective.. Sure finding spells was a pain but that was about it.

the style it went for was the "so flashy you hardly care what's going on anymore" type, the whole screen was filled with nonsense, animation and action took a back seat to glitter, and most of the action could be off camera for as long as it took you to reposition the camera, which was still covered in glitter.  It didn't help that you pretty much watched battles unfold, only make the occasional important decision.  I've never seen a game that took such a good backstory and solid gameplay history and made such a lousy product.
