Title: [WIP]RPG Knight sprites
Post by: Shrike on January 08, 2008, 04:29:29 pm
After i drew the orcs,
(http://www.maj.com/gallery/exendia/Misc/orcs.bmp)

i decided to do a knight with full walking animations and such. Here's the outcome so far:

credit to Surt for a few of the colors from his knight example in this (http://www.wayofthepixel.net/pixelation/index.php?topic=5704.0 (http://www.wayofthepixel.net/pixelation/index.php?topic=5704.0)) topic.

I'll change that in later updates, don't worry.

c&c are welcome! :)

The selout is really ugly. Try complete outlines or none. The walk is... not very walk like. Looks more like someone is shooting as his feet. My feet move forward when I walk. Very like movement to the sides. The body also turns a little. The shoulders and arms sway while the feet and legs move.

If a movement is perfectionized (and scaled down to few enough pixels) all that happens is that the arms and legs get shorter, while one of the two gets brighter while the other gets darker.
Legs don't come out at the hips, but between them. So make sure your legs are in the center of the body. Also your legs should be longer than the torso and the fingers should reach to just above the knees when the back is perfectly straight.
The large size of the head I will see as a style choice to be able to define it more.

But the head itself has a very high hairline (whch is incorrect) and a too long head shape.
So here's a little edit to accentuate what I mean by all that:

Heres an update:

Fully original colors!

I'd like some c&c before i make walking animations.

The original man (first man on left) with the big boots : FANTASTIC!  :y: It has real character.

The new ones ... not so good. Take some of Treviourous good points, such as shading the chin, arm movement, and use four frames, but his straight leg straight arm animation looks boring. The hair line doesn't need to be changed, I have a big forehead like that.

Work on your animation, and put in those big shoes!

The helmet looks bad imo becuase it doesn't cover enough of the face (and so would be useless in battle). The body shape for the orc is alright, but you need to squeeze a face in there.

Thanks a ton.

By the way, what do you use to animate? i'm trying to work with adobe ImageReady, but i wondered what you use.
and can i have a sheet of the animation you just did?

Photoshop CS3 works pretty well most of the time.

Yes, photoshop CS3 can convert layers to frames, as well as import limages to frames, and then export as GIF.
