Title: 32x32 alien sprites.
Post by: DrDerekDoctors on November 24, 2005, 02:48:53 pm
Thought I'd post a mixed bag of sprites from a game a friend is making and I'm providing the graphics for. Some I like, some I hate. I'll let you decide which is which. :)

*Dies of jiggly pleasure*

I think you hate the second and the last, even thought I love them. maybe because the second one lacks in coloring and the last one in animation (at least compared to the rest)

any way, any of them is briliant!!! please show more!!! congrats! take care

Haha, thanks muchly!

You're right that I hate the last one, but I love the second one because he has the squidgy blind eyes. And while he does lack for colours, he's meant to be a bit shinier, so it's allowed. I also hate the green and orange jellyfish thing in which is the middle one. And the second drilly one. I might redraw that one at a slightly 3D angle.

man, I've always loved these jiggly blobby loops of yours, these are pretty damn awesome.

I really really like that plasmaglobe with the voltaic arcs, it's just such an awesome idea for an animation.

the jellyfish is actually one of my favorites too, it's got this really creepy tumorlike texture to it..I got no clue how you could hate it

the little blisteroid has those little....puss sacs, the translucent look there was awesomely executed..love that part, IDK what's with the little sacs orbiting the sillouethe tho...look kinda off place?

the greenie...well, that one just doesnt compare, it's like last time's dreadnaught only a whole lot crappier...it's kinda sad

(http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b340/baybaybom/dreadnaught_anim.gif) (http://www.drderekdoctors.com/iball2/greenie.gif) 'nuff said =/

Finally, when are we going to see a non loop from you? cant wait to see what you would do with something a bit more extensive

Thanks, Camus! :)

Yeah, the plasmaglobe came out okay, although it'd be way nicer if it had a buttload more frames and variation. I think it's the transparency which sells it, really. I love graphics which have something inside them, like horrid brains floating in jelly. :)

I think I don't like the jellyfish because the scaling in it is really cheap for the most part and the bits on top just flap around a bit. I like the transparency of it (that brain in jelly look I mentioned) but the animation is poor. But it's a sad fact when you have 30-40 sprites to do which you want to look unique and animated then

As for the blisteroid, I got the idea for it from a deeeeeeply unpleasant image on Snopes which is a faked insect infection of a breast. Really grim image, but has that lovely effect of something protruding from the skin of something else about it. The bits around the edge were just so there was a bit more movement in it, really. Not my wisest decision. (http://www.snopes.com/photos/medical/breastrash.asp - for the really grim image if you're interested, it's faked, btw)

As for the greenie, yeah, it was one of the first ones and el cheapo as a result. Doesn't really compare to the good ol' Dreadnaught. Y'know, I'm not even sure that ever got used in the game it was made for. But it does show how creatively bankrupt I am that I recycle the same themes all the time.

As for non-looping, I don't think I could ever make a long animation unless it was for a game...

WOW!!

It's been like weeks since I posted here, but I can't not comment on these.

Overall I agree with the common sentiment that some are better than others, but none are bad at all. My personal favorites are the squid, floater and jellyfish. The composition alone (texture and lighting) on the jellyfish makes it look too good to have been done by human hands -- it looks more like a hand-edited pre-rendered CG model. I agree, though, that its weakest feature is the animation. Comparing it to the likes of the fungoid (gorgeous pulsation) makes it seem too rigid and not "squishy" enough, which actually furthers the pre-rendered impression, too. The blades on the cutter look a bit cheap to me. I think they need some density, like a thick edge along the dull side of the blades, maybe. Even from the side view, though, they just look too flat, and I think the black outline with the relatively light shades and reflections makes them look a bit less finished than the rest of it, so they seem a little inconsistent. Maybe some anti-aliasing on the inside of the outline would help? The basic shape of the sack appeals to me a lot, but I think maybe he could use some bumps or more defined texture, and might benefit from some wobbly eyes like those on your dreadnaught. Camus is extremely right about that, by the way. Dreadnaught totally shames greenie, so I second that motion.

Thanks for showing them, they make me happy. You're very awesome.

Now I want to see an astronaut with a jet pack and a laser gun to blast them. Are you privvy to Baraduke (AKA "Alien Sector") (http://screenmania.retrogames.com/arcade/04/arcade_0114.html), or is the vague resemblence serendipitous?

I'm loving these muchly. They are pulsing in time with my music...
The first one rocks my socks off.
I'm not sure about the black outlines but thats probably a game related thing.
The second driller looks bland in comparasion with the rest of them.

All these creatures are awesome  :o

What type of game the sprites are made for ?

Really nice, cool animations, they really look like if I squeezed em all sorts of nasty coloured goo would shoot out :D

My fave are the 3 legged octopus thing, the blue dude with the crazy tongue and the glowing spider thingamy. Some of em are quite obviously miles better than others.

ER, about the jellyfish, I think you just went with too much of a regularly paced animation style for that one, I cut frame 3 and 6....I think it looks a lot better that way.

That floater guy is just so cool I had to his make a quick facelift to his animation
(http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b340/baybaybom/floaterc.gif)

His anim had a too visible reverse, so I just made some quick copy paste 1, 2 , 4 and 5 to make it a little more lively...drag and drop isnt always a bad thing for an animation, you just got to know where to make the incisions Doctor ;)

Garsh: Baraduke is something I'm familiar with - I didn't make a conscious effort to draw inspiration from it but I may well have done, while as a game I think it ain't great there are certainly some things about the creatures in it I love. I agree that the knives on the cutter aren't exactly spot-on so I'll look into making them thicker. Maybe they should be kinda' triangular in shape (as in the inside edge is a proper flat so the blade is almost like a tapered toblerone). To be fair, the dreadnought was drawn as a boss type thing so a bit more effort went into it, plus it's bigger, man! ;)

Crazy Asian Gamer: I'm hoping to make some new ones which are even grosser. I love squishy.

Akira: The black outlines is something which is just a habit of mine that I doubt I'll ever completely shrug. At least they don't have black inlines like all my stuff used to. And yuss, the second drillery one is pants. Certainly needs something extra about it.

JuJucece: It's for a remake of I, Ball 2 - it's a one-screen-at-a-time sorta' platform shooter puzzler. It's for the ZX Spectrum. (here's a review of it: http://www.worldofspectrum.org/showmag.cgi?mag=YourSinclair/Issue89/Pages/YourSinclair8900010.jpg)

TinyGiant: Thanks muchly! I'm pleased with the texture on the octopus things head, but I think the main body needs more motion, it's like everything stops where his legs join his body. Shame on me.

Camus: Yuss, he does reverse cheesily. I'll adapt the animation to make the body do more of a circular motion so that's lessened, ta' for pointing it out.

Dan: Thanks!

Those are adorable. The only thing I see is I want to see the eyes on the last guy have a little vertical movement, probably opposite to that of his body (but only a pixel or two).

Thanks! Yeah, the last guy needs a lot of work, really, needs to have more movement all around.

wow! I love them all except the last one, something about the static eyes(?) not moving bothers me, otherwise, they are beautiful and smooth.

Also, crazy asian gamer, keep your god damn mouth shut unless you're going to add something positive to what you said, that's been a pixelation rule for years.
