Title: How to get started?
Post by: CosmoJarvis on October 12, 2020, 11:04:53 pm
Hello everyone! I'm new to Pixelation. I'm really excited to see an entire forum dedicated to posting and critiquing pixel art. I've been really interested in getting involved with pixel art these past couple of years but never really knew how to get started. I'm not very good at art normally - though I can draw a damn good stick figure!

Does anyone have any recommendations for pixel art programs (free or cheap preferably) and tutorials on how to draw pixel art?

Aseprite, which seems most people prefer using, is pretty cheap at $20, and there's a free trial version.
Some people use GraphicsGale instead, which is free. https://graphicsgale.com/us
And others even use the old MSPaint.

As for tutorials, there's plenty at Lospec:

If you're on Windows there are many free choices. I advise you to use anything that provides easy ways to :
- Zoom in/out. Many programs provide mousewheel control for this.
- Pick color, especially from the image. An easily reachable keyboard shortcut (or mouse button) is a must.
