Alright with some actual experience in pixelling now, I've decided to pick back up my zombie game, except instead of a platformer, it'll be well, yeah, top-down. I will be adding more characters/zombies/objects/tiles soon, so keep checking. Anyway for now I need some critiques, so do what you do best guys.

Well, for starters this isn't top-down, it's strictly sideview.  A lot of old RPG's did get away with this view, but that's because they were working with such small sprites, when going larger there's not as much room for error.

Yeah, I figured I could get away with that as well. I fixed up my side zombie:

After seeing some errors, like that his head looked a tad too big and some features were off. So should I edit these and change the perspective or do you think it'd work like this?

well right now it looks like you blew it up about 150% because of your sketchiness.  I know you're trying to be different with your rendering style but there's a reason that people don't work like this except for quick oekaki type stuff: you make your forms less organic by working freely and the disregard for shape and pixel-perfect placement prevents things from integrating with each other.  You're also running into the same troubles you have with all your recent pieces: there's too much sudden change between forms and your lighting makes no sense.  You're rendering microforms with rough rather than refined strokes and you completely neglecting the macroforms.

As far as the perspective, no, you wont get away with it.  even the old games only got away with it because there was so little for them to be compared to.  we live in a world now where things have been done well too many times to get by with glaring issues like that.

Use outlines because then it forces you to have forms, rather than just blocky shading. Also looks like you use a 2 by 2 brush sometimes, but it looks bad like u did it in a hurry.

I don't really want to add an outline, mainly because I want to get form without the use of lines. Though if you want, I can add lines... anyone think I should make this bigger?

I just think outlines and cartoony stuff goes together, your older stuff looks better.

I think that if you want to not use an outline, you need to draw something realistic with more colors.

Maybe try doing one with outlines and no shading, won't take too long. Right now, looks more front on than top down, the spots on the head are random, shading on shirt makes it look like he has a massive chin, buckle on belt should be in middle. No hands?

Well, you got some valid points right there and with the outline it will be able to stick out from the background.

Much better  :y:

His right hand shouldn't have his finger extended like it is, i think walk his finger curled. The shading on the cheecks should be different because the light source is above.

I'll be adding more in a bit.

Hmmm, it looks alright so far.  The palette choice is interesting.  Keep up the good work and take care.

Is that second weapon supposed to be a shotgun? Looks a bit strange the way it comes to a point like that.
The chainsaw is my favorite, but I think the hilight on the red area could be moved up a bit or something. I dunno, it's a bit pillowshadedy as is.

The dark line between the shirt and head on the back of the zombie is...a bit distracting.
Otherwise the zombie's cool.

if the shotgun's a bit 'pointy' then the chainsaw looks like a boxing glove stuck on a stick...

Maybe it's the red?

perhaps it would work in yellow? (then at least blood would show up more ?)

The chainsaw's on its side, I also fixed a some things and added a few weapons:
(http://img145.imageshack.us/img145/1963/chainsawxu1.gif) (http://img69.imageshack.us/img69/8541/shotgunud0.gif) (http://img248.imageshack.us/img248/5024/sledgehammerhc7.gif) (http://img69.imageshack.us/img69/281/knifebh4.gif)
I can see how the chainsaw is pillow-shadey..... I tried to fix this with my newest update.
