Title: Hero in the making
Post by: Winston on November 03, 2007, 05:31:43 pm
okay, well I started making a game, it features the main character as a little kid, who battles aliens (based off of spaceman spiff) calvin and hobbes.
I have began doing the main character sprite which has only it's head complete, I have no even decided on the color for the cape shirt or pants.

Hey there Winston,  I am not an expert but one thing that stands out is that it is kinda hard to see your hero.  Is there a reason you chose the size you did?  I hope Im not treading on your toes.  Its just my two-cents worth.  Cheers!

Jack

he is meant to be small because the game is played at 2x or 4x like cavestory

He probably thinks the piece should be larger because he's a bit difficult to see in a BG such as the one he's in. The reason why Cave Story worked was because well, high contrast and very simple BGs:

Fix the light source on your rock, everything should have a top-down light source and remove your outlines on everything or at least the grass and rock.

thanks for the input,
the background was thrown together at the last minute but I see your advice, could somebody post an example of how to improve the background to make it easier to see?

I honestly think that unless the game will be at 2x, then you should, just make the character bigger and more defined. Another reason its hard to see, is the fact that he has a 1px outline, and the rock has a much bigger one(which makes it look more important).

If I were playing that sort of game, a rock that well defined and large would actually tell my mind that I would be able to stand on it as part of the level, so I think it would make sense for the hero to be able to jump on the rock than it is for it to be a background object.

as I said before the background was thrown together quickly, the rock was actually from a previous set of graphics, so it will not actually be in the game, but for now I just threw it in. thanks for the comments but I am looking more for comments on the character and not the background
