Title: Generic Punk [WIP] - Newbie?
Post by: Awkward on October 23, 2007, 12:13:17 am
Hi there. I’m new ‘round here, and I would like some advice. This is just a generic punk.

9 colours, counting transparency.

Like it a lot!!

I'm new, too, so my crits not going to be brilliant, but all I would say is that the eyes seem a bit wide to be sitting on the face correctly and both feet are on tippy-toes.

Other, than that, very nice. I love the colours.  :)

I really like your punk, so I made some edits because I liked him so much  ;D

Increased highlights, color changed, made the eyes closer together and the made the feet flat...

take it or leave it its just somthing to look at  ::)

Hmm, I like this guy too, lots of potential. Reminds me of a Gunstar Heroes character. Couldn't resist having a go at the guy either.

Changes:

1. Colors: Used a 16 color palette (15 sprite colors + transparency). This is a good norm for 16 bit era character sprites.
2. Outlines: Darker ones used on the lower body, and on the edges facing away from the top light source. Less outlining inside the sprite, better to use shapes and contrast so it doesn't get too busy.
3. Eyes: Gave them a definite direction and pulled out the whites in the eyes. Your guy was kind of staring into the vast nothingness of existance. Gave him eyebrows too.
4. Pose: Reversed his right foot and rounded off the feet. That alone seemed to fix the issues with the awkwardness of the original pose.
5. Lots of other little tweaks. I should really have saved this in steps as I went along tweaking things. Sorry. If you've got any questions on how I did this or that just ask.

Thanks very much for the two edits.

Here’s an animation of my current progress. Yeah, there’s a lot of difference between my second and third picture. For progress, I tend to animate by sitting.

First is original, second is an edit based on Atum’s advice, and the third on pkmays’s advice. I’m having a little trouble with the arms, but I’m sure I’ll get it through. Feel free, and please, point out any mistakes you see.

kill the selout and everything will be better. Either connect the outlines, or don't have outlines! This is a style critique, feel free to disregard.

Just as a learning thing... I've been noticing that a lot of pixel characters that get worked on here start off really light and end up much stronger when they have deeper shadows/larger areas of darker colour. When approaching something like this, is it best to begin with your intended darkest shade and then add highlights? Or is there some other method that most of you use?

Loving the edit on this  :y: Though, to me, the left eye seems very sideways (a lot of white to the right) in comparison to the right...

Selout?

Selout (http://www.wayofthepixel.net/pixelation/index.php?topic=5253.msg62953#msg62953)

He means get rid of the random dark single pixels around the hair and legs, and I agree.

Took Rargh!’s advice and changed the eye slightly. But perhaps you could’ve taken as ‘the head was in a 1/4 profile’?

pkmays, I tried as hard as I could without making it look bad. I think I did it though, unless you meant something else.

Also, I added a different colour scheme, just deciding to get the colour scheme over and done with before continuing with the arms, which are giving me quite the trouble.

By the way, I've tried.

Tried to finish one of the arms, although I don't know whether I did well. I took pkmays's advice for the skull; It looks a little better now, I think.

Nitpicks, and lessened a colour.
