Title: Yie Are Kung Fu hero
Post by: dfcastelao on September 15, 2007, 01:12:30 am
Hi, I'm David. I've just wrote my ob. introduction post, so you can read it for further information about myself if you feel curious enough ;).

We are planning to do some sort of Yie Are Kung Fu Anthology game. So we plan to use characters from different incarnations of the game. This one, Young Lee, is the hero from the MSX version of YAKF 2. The original sprite is a tribute to Bruce Lee, so my version is based on him too (from the film Fist of fury).

I believe that, despite of having almost no neck, he resembles Bruce enough :). But I feel that he looks quite dull yet.

C&C are welcome.

Edit: some highlights added

he looks better with highlights, his forward hand looks funny, maybe he should have his hand out in the classic carate (dunno how to spell it) position.

You're right. The forehand seems a bit odd. I've been looking some videos of Bruce Lee and decided to changed his pose a bit.

I've tried to add some shading to it...

It doesn't look right to me, but I can't say exactly what the problem is  :-[. It's supposed to be highlighted from top.

Some help would be greatly appreciated.

Whoa.  Nice tribute.  I thought Bruce Lee understood mechanics of structures perfectly.  I like the detailing of the clothing as well, but I feel that his upper left arm (right side of image) looks a bit strange.  As if his arm was crumpled up or something.

The stance is totally off.

It's more karate and less Kung Fu.

THe Yie Ar Kung Fu character has it's weight on the back foot, with the front foot balancing 'just' on the toes. The Left arm covers the solar plexus and the right arm is in a position that is similar to a snake preparing to strike.

I used to do kung fu, but I can't remember the name of this stance - but it is a classic kung fu pose.

Similarly I used to do Karate and the stance you currently have bruce in is familiar to me from that. (Again I can't remember the name of the stance)

I'll post an edit soon...
;)

Yes, the stance is completely different from the original one. I decided to use this one after watching the Bruce Lee vs Chuck Norris fight at the coliseum. By the way, an edit woul be wellcomed!

On the other hand, I've drawed the "standing" animation:

Nobody said anything about the shading, so I've tried to follow the same style.

Hair movement... on a man with short hair? Seems odd.

the stress frame where he leans on the left (ours) knee needs a small buffer frame to ease the loop in and out. You did it with the right knee lean, do it with the left too.

Bruce Lee's one of my favorite legends also. Try adding some brown or some reddish brown to his hair. Asians actually look cool with hair colored than natural black. Check out Fei Long and Ryu from Street Fighter for that inspiration.

Adding that frame has helped a lot. It look more fluent now. Thank you for the suggestion.

About the hair color, I'm gonna stick with the black hair. I strongly believe that Bruce Lee shouldn't look like a japanese punk [;)].

something still looks off to me... I think this could do with some more arm movement, especially in our left arm.

It's alright if he doesn't have brown hair. I think you could add like brown highlights on black hair :D. Just my idea. Hehe those guys punk guys are koreans actually hehehe.
