If you've never done this before, here's how it works:
1. Post lineart and/or post your coloring of other lineart already displayed.
2. Repeat.
It's that easy.

Tips on the style -> (http://img293.imageshack.us/img293/9301/metallighting2vw.png) I really liked the shading done on this robot and it would roll perfectly with the Murokumo style. If no one takes it I might try and emulate the style because I really like it.

Same here. The lineart of that vampire guy I made to start the topic was the first time I've just made lineart without coloring at the same time.

I stated on that robot granted I'm not done yet but I’m getting there. I spent a couple of hours last night working on this all the while I had heartburn. Just wanted others opinions. I wanted to over compensate the highlights because that’s how the game did it. Very very shiny red metal and dull grey. Honestly I couldn’t figure out which parts were where and I’m having serious issues with the claw arm and those circular holes. Until i figure out what is what it will probably stay pillow shading.

Oh, sorry about that. It's just that I'm used to going to one forum, and they already saw that I gave credit. The cloud is the only one not mine.. and the rest were drawn by me, and then made into lineart, pixel by pixel.. >_<

There's no link as Ptoing destroyed the forum once Pixelopolis went live. Perhaps, I'm mistaken here, if I ever see the guy posting art here, I'll ask him for the piece he showed on Ptoing's board and show you.

A couple people made those videos, but I think that one in particular was Adam "Sals" Tierney. I don't remember the picture, but I remember Adam's video with his quick Photoshop skills left me confused as to how he did it all, so I'm guessing that's what you're talking about. At least, I think Adam was the maker of that video.

Very nice, tho i think the darkest colour could be a bit darker imo, it adds quite a bit of depth. And the aa could be quite a bit better. SHAME ON YOU! Almost but no colourcycle!

hehe I happen to think it's my best piece so far so!
The aa could be quite a bit nicer, there is lots of jaggies going on all over the place.
Main problems are:
- Not using all the shades you have to aa (which does not mean that you always have to fit in as much aa-shades as possible between two shades)
- Dithering sometimes seems to be placed not regarding bordering aa which results in what i will now call "dither to aa clash"
On the aa'ed ones i did not only aa, but also edit minor things like the dither to aa clash and i darkened that bright spot on the left (our) brow.
As far as the entire darkening goes i only darkened the 3 darkest shades, I think the gained depth speaks for itself, unless you wanted it to be misty.

First of all, thanks for the in-depth critique and edits, ptoing. As always, I really appreciate it, and almost nobody crits and edits me a lot anymore so thanks doubly.
You are quite right that the AA is spartan. In your version everything's cleaner and rounded out, but as I mainly intended this as an 1x zoom piece in 1204x res or so, the final effect is really minimal. Obviously since pixel artists are really anal about detail, this doesn't say much, since if you tidy every little bit up, it goes the extra 1% of the way to make something from great to complete awesome. I'll try to use more skillful and proper AA from now on, even AFTER my brain screams 'you're finished, done. This stands as it is.'
As to the darkening, although from a game-art perspective more contrast is better, the palette has been optimized towards a specific feel and aesthetic, as you say, misty. My eye prefers your version, of course, but my brain knows what was up and sticks to the gameplan :P
Total agreement on aaditherclash, will try to keep an eye out for such stuff in the future. I intend to do a few more portraits in this vein, so the next one will benefit from all this critique and thoughts. In fact, ptoing, why don't you send me a pic of you straight-on, at this res, or even if you feel like it, lineart it too, and I'll do the bitmap brothers dealie on it.
I intend to do a portrait of myself in the future as well, and of a few other people I have in mind. It's going to be good fun to see them all assembled in the end, pop-art style.

I have no idea why I deserved that kind of nonsense, it's not like I owe it to anybody to show my art... 'upset'? How about 'ungrateful'?

Ndeal, I actually made the lineart with a lot of your stuff in mind. I really like that instead of just going along with the original lineart, you changed it a bit. Like getting rid of the straight edge Xs and pockets, changing the hair and the socks into shoes. I gotta say though, your AA is getting jagged. Like the back of his head and shirt, the AA is just too dark.
Dan, interesting take on my lineart. I really liked the blue pinstripes and the color choice is good, although the shadows are pretty overwhelming. Especially noticable in the jeans since every spot without a shadow has a midtone and highlight. Try to keep in mind that highlights don't have to go everywhere.

Yes naso don’t do it again or we will have to beat you with our shock rods… Second thought… I’m a tad behind on my beating quota, so post a few more… not so many it would be considered research but enough to give me reason to beat you with a shock rod. I made another lineart. It seems that this thread has improved my lineart making, but my coloring abilities seem to be failing me. Every time I start coloring a lineart, it turns to crap and I retry, come out with same crappy results and quit. Oh well, here it is.

Crazy Asian Gamer: Add highlights to that beast. It'd definitely give him a lot more depth. You could probably add some more luminescence to the mix of the shadow color, since it's hard to see the outline color. Putting in more midtones would be nice too, just using two colors isn't going to bring all the depth and detail to him themselves.

its actually not the first time.. if i remember correctly he posted a lineart of a bear on pixeljoint and the bear was actually 'newton the bear' i done a google search and it came up with a image that looked exactly like it..

Yeah, Naso, has quite the history of doing this kind of stuff, stretching from Pixelation, to GSAArchives.com, Pixel Academy, Pixeljoint(as you mentioned, tell me if you can believe this came before the teddy http://pixeljoint.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=353&PN=9), and finally ending up again on Pixelopolis. What has he posted here? More lineart(by the same person that got him banned), 2 colours of digimon lineart(all 3 never finished I might add and refs not mentioned unless pushed to), some sprites and an eye.

JIn nearly everything I make, you'll find Ndeal and Frank Jaeger inspired parts.
OMGFossil, nice coloring, although the details of the blue are hard to see with it all being the same hue (from the looks of it at least) and there's not enough contrast in the shadows. Personally, I'd try to break up that blue with trim and such. A couple highlights would help too.

It took way too long cause I did it AFTER i took out my contacts, and i left my glasses at a friend's house, so my face was like, right on the screen...I need to learn restraint ;p My eyes ended up bloodshot this morning. I know they look like mosquito wings, it was intended to be an insectoid dragon, thus the style of wings and the six legs. I like the way your coloring job is coming out, looks sweet

Interesting idea. I'd like to see it finished.
Also, might I suggest you give your shades of grey a slight blue or green tinting? Flat greys never really catch your eye like a deeply saturated blue can.

Some guy back at pixelation seen my optimus prime and asked me to make him some mecha from some animé he watched, got a few reference pics and pixelled it, never got round to actually colouring though.

I just liked the look of two palettes from Colour Lovers (http://www.colourlovers.com/) and had to use them on something. So I started on the woman Angy Chan posted. I did have to alter one color and I don't think I ever got around to using that blue color in the top right of the palette. Everything started to look the same since the palette is dominated with reddish and purple colors so it got hard to make anything look seperate from the others. Plus I didn't want to add more colors and didn't feel like going back through the entire image to switch around colors, which made it more difficult. Sadly I'm not too patient either so this may or may not be as far as I get.

Just a thought: dithering doesn't usually work too well on metal. That and the colors don't define the form very well. It would help if you differentiated between the darkness of the colors more; there's plenty of hue differentiation (were you trying for 3 lightsources or something?), but the mech seems really flat from lack of value differences. The internal black lines don't help much either. That's more than one thought. Whatever. It's 1:00 in the morning. Good luck with the mech; that's some really complex lineart.

Yeah, I agree robalan, dithering gives metal a different texture to.... metal. So, it won't look right if it's dithered, unless the artist is going for a particular style or whatever.

Shadow wolf: the eyes take away from the rest of the piece, they look flat. Also, shading on the torso doesn't quite fit with the one on the legs (the legs look better) and head. I'd tweak that, changing the highlights further up the torso and adding an extra middle shade between lightest and midtone.
Blick, you really should finish that, for the sake of mankind. Her skin is a bit low on contrast, if possible try to work that with the palette.
Badassbill: oh wow. Looking good, good luck with that huge thing.
Sohashu: the shading on the tail and lower leg shouldn't be gradients of the upper leg. Your shading should try to define each of the parts of the dragon separately, as lighting hits these surfaces in different manners and angles. And maybe a bit less saturation would look nice.

Tracing is bad altogether.. Unless you drew a sketch of your own, You could compile your own list of tracer's and apply for them to be banned xD

That's awesome. I loved Howl's Moving Castle. I really wanted to pixel it for an iso pixel scene but looking at pictures of the castle made me go : :-\ I had no idea how to even ATTEMPT it without tracing. :P

First off: Holy crap. Beautiful palette, nice use of it and wonderfully made overall. I really enjoy what you did with the eyes, it's exactly the kind of dead dark circles I was hoping for. Just a few things are off or could be improved, for example the light purple being used to aa the outline to the background isn't doing anything. It doesn't smooth anything, and I'd say you've have better luck with just removing it. You could've cut into the lines a bit with aa to get them to look less chunky, like on the shoulder in the shadow. Overall though, it's really great to look at. Loving the mood of it.

I put the purple for the AA because was the closest color. Then I look at it and I thought: "or it makes a slightly difference or simply makes nothing, so why not keep it anyway, nobody will see it".
Now I realize that would be easier if I just added another color for the AA. So here is how it looks now:

I'd say give it more form, less texture. Define the shape a little more, using the colors not just to draw scales, but to show the shape of the lizard.

Had a crack at Turbo's Lineart.
I'm diggin' da lumps :). Really nice texture (must be a bit of a pain to texture that lumpy pattern individually). The colors are nice too, i get some "magic/fantasy" vibes from this blueish green. I love how the belly skin's texture looks altogether different from the rest of the body, the shininess of the surface. That twist on the lower half looks kind of odd... perhaps making the curve of the brighter skin part more pronounced would make it better? Also, adding some shadows cast from the arms of head on the torso would give it more depth. Those spots on the tail shading are nice too, but suggest a smoother texture, different than the one at the top (just a nitpick really).

The scales' highlights add more depth, looking better, and the shading has improved. As Faktablad suggested, you could now start suggesting more volume, by making larger highlights where light strikes the surface with greater intensity, and smaller and smaller as it fades (fading near the edges of the body). Look at an orange, or think of a cilinder. The upper and middle torso would benefit this most, for they are the bulkier parts of the lizzard thing. I like your colors, but you could afterwards play with their saturations a bit and make a few hue shifts (make the highlights less saturated, shift the dark tones towards purple, or blue, etc), just for the fun of it :)
On the tail, you could just add some shading on the bottom and no highlights, or you could add a secondary light source, shining from below.

TakaM: If you don't mind me saying. The folds on her rear are not really flowing naturally. They should follow more along the lines of her legs, unless you were going for stretch folds. In that case they're to loose. IMO of course.

Ok, i decided i'd colour one of Arachne's linearts. The snake/worm thing seemed like a neat choice, so here it is. I think this is the first time i've ever added secondary lighting, or whatever it's called. It should look good on both dark and light backgrounds ^_^

im quite pleased with how it turned out.
i made some edits especially in the body to make better sense for myself as to what was going on.
pleased with the hair and some parts of body especially
got lazy with the hair accessories.
i know theres some sections that could still be cleaned, but i wanted this to be a colouring exercise and i feel its served its purpose.

im lovin it, the only things i can think of would be to try and reduce the colors a bit, but dont lose any detai over it.

Im really into Traditional Martial Arts, these may be a bit big, and YES they were traced, just for the use of others, dont flame me. I think they look awesome so I did these. Whoever wants to color/shade can do so.
We have the styles from Boxing, to Muay Thai, to Kung Fu, to Jeet Kun Do, and others, like Iron Fist. Just information. They may look a bit choppy, but will AA, it will look fine, smooth, ect cetera.

Officials drew them, it was from some martial arts site, showing examples of styles. They look awesome with the accurate positing and anatomy on muscles.

The anatomy on none of this is accurate. It's based on photography I'd guess, but the musculature needs a lot of work. If you guys really want somebody smashing something in the banner, we could make a small contest out of it, we don't need no traces.

I see 8, even at 1x: 2 blues, 3 yellows, 1 gray, black, and transparent. The colors could stand to be more contrasted, but unless he does some pallette integration (which could be done, and perhaps should, such as using blue to shade or highlight the wings or shade the bill), 8 is about right to shade what he has.

the way i see it is 2 for the skin (gotta change the 3rd one, not much contrast at all), 2 for the clothes, 2 for the wings, + black and transparent...unless in my 11 years of school i cant add up to 8, that equals 8 :P

Pallette integration is "all colors everywhere" shading. For example, in this piece you could use the dark blue of the clothing as a shading color on the wings, or use a light, desaturated yellow as a common highlight for the whole piece. Those linearts are great Hydra, even if you didnt do them originally, it's still nice to have them avialible to color. I just wish I was better at coloring :P I'm totally absorbed in all forms of wushu, and anchient chinese martial arts.
Can I ask where you got the pictures you traced those linearts from? Once I get better chops I will definately do one of those

well I think you need more contrast between your colours, they're all relatively dark, the lightest ones need to be lighter imo.. other than that it looks well shaded imo, you've obviously taken your time with it :)

The intermammary cleft (cleavage) is thought to be analogous, visually (as stimuli), to the vagina.
This is so literally expressed in the piece to demonstrate the nebulous nature of sexual attraction.
Or the predictability of it?
The figure, Poseidon, is depicted as such to show his embrace of the water and its vinegar.
I used such feminine imagery to limn a motherly love I would not have been able to achieve with the (stone-faced) image of Poseidon himself.
Also, tying into what I've previously stated, the confusion of motherly love being represented by normally erotic anatomy attempts to demonstrate the ambiguity of sexual attraction.
As the vagina and breasts used to be, "where we come from and where we eat."
As we grow this idea is perverted, clearly, as the statement in quotations could be taken out of context.

To be honest i think the best version was the second from right. Once you started adding the washed out highlight it... looked washed out. And very flat. More contrast! More depth! Yus.
Oh yeah and perhaps shift the highlight toward yellow a little, then it might look less glossy..

Still thought something was wrong, after taking a piek at Grunt revised (http://www.pixeljoint.com/pixelart/15867.htm#) from Indigo. I knew what I've done wrong. I needed a darker shade, just like Larwick said to... Tried out to make it a bit purple-ish, and that came out pretty good, iff i may say so:

Please, don't save your art as a .jpg. It turns it from pixel art to compression droppings. Your original was very nice, but it was overantialiased to the BG, making it look blurry on the edges.

Nope! Just the B&W colors and shape do;). But that doesn't mean its not awesome. Still, I can't see the dark blue polka dots on the back leg unless I zoom in. And the hair's got no contrast.

you've pillow-shaded that first pic, try picking a light source and stick with it when you're doing shadows.

I really like the style of shading you did there Souly. Only thing that bugs me is the black not transitioning that well with the other shades. Maybe lighten up the black or add another buffer shade. Thanks for coloring my lines :)

It's actually quite a simple/cheap way of pixelling, first i filled in the white with a midtone, and the black with a shadowtone, then just found 'shards' or 'ridges' in the lines, and went from light to dark on them. Lots of referencing with crystals. And i gave it a sliver of 'secondary lighting' which was really just to make it look seethrough. Adding random bright pixels makes it look glittery (or wet, like on the tongue).
Anyway, your lines are brilliant, but just practice more with colouring and you'll be fine.

The left foot (or it's feet? I really dunno, my english still need improvements) of the dragon looks wrong if you compare to the other one, it should be plain like a platform game, or make the other foot like the left one... :-[

I'm new at Pixelation and also in the whole pixel art actually (been doing it for something like half a year now). Anyway, I saw this thread and desided to try coloring something. So I selected surt's alien thing and this is what came up to:

In my humble opinion, I managed to do it pretty well since I'm really not very good at pixel art (Yet! ;D). The shading is probably crappy and especially the weapon sucks.
The lineart is awesome! Was fun trying to color it. :)

Some things I would suggest would be work on your aa, and watch out for the depth you create when you shade something a certain way. I say that because if you look at the line in his head, it looks like it could dip in because of the way you shaded it. Also, try to avoid using too much black in a piece. In this particular instance, a few dark grays would have worked nicely. Other then that, a good start, no doubt! :y:

Hi everybody, I'm the new guy :)
I've always been fascinated by pixelart but I never really tried it, my drawings don't make it to the scanner.
Well, here's my first try, I hope it's not too shabby. I'm looking forward to any tips on how to improve my work. I'll try creating some lineart myself in the future!

Clearly, this Euro fella saw the image and used it as an avatar.. I mean, no consideration was considered in the size, since it's be auto resized..

MotherBoard, I suggest you go to General Discussion to find a Pixel Art tutorial.
Your pose is good for a begginer but, YOU DONT SAVE PIXEL ART AS A JPEG.

I really didn't understand what you've said, but I was kinda testing using a lot of antialiasing in this one... I don't use it this way all time

What I meant was that the antialiasing doesn't work, at all in some places (the butt for example)

Wow impressive! Yeah.. I screwed up and didn't save the lines. I had a webserver school computer and stored them there.. But I forgot to store the lines. :(
