Title: [WIP] Animated Glow Effect
Post by: Phlox on August 06, 2007, 05:36:37 pm
I need some examples and suggestions on how to make a glow effect on this stone with writing carved in it.

Probably it should change lighting on the stone too?

Don't make us "suggest" it. Do some research on your own and try to find out how such a glow would look like. Experiment with it, show it to us, and then we can help you fix it to make it look right. It's a much more fun and gives more experience.

Okay, I know that you probably think the glow isn't all that fantastic, but I tried as hard as I could to reproduce the real-world effects involved.

I also added shadows from the grass, and removed the Dithering. I know it was uncalled for, and there are tons of Jaggies, but I tried my best to give you a general direction.

Ornust did a pretty good example of showing how the lighting would be, personally, I think the rock is just too plain, I mean, don't you think it's been out in the wild for awhile or whatever? Here's an edit of mine:

Give it some moss, some bugs, give it some nature man, add some cracks, add some shadows infront of it so it seems like it's in a forest or something(Not exactly sure what I made for that, I guess it's some part of a tree?) . With all this, you get to have a better end product, not only is the rock now being lighted but so are the moss, the bugs on the rock are moving and altogether it'll just feel more real. Also, clean your lines up mah boi.

I thought the exact same thing about it being rather plain.. But I just focused on improving his current Line-Art.

Also, that looks pretty awesome. But what is the X in the middle?  :D

i guess it doesn't really create new shadows but i was thinking it would look darker in the shadows that were already there ???

Did you know that it is true that brighter light gives darker shadow :P

The side of the rock should not grow lighter, as it is not hit by the glow, it should remain the same or get darker.

Definitely an improvement.

Nonsense, adding light never reduces the amount of light.  you're either thinking of how the aperture needs to shrink to in order to rebalance exposure (making everything darker), or just how adding brightness can make the rest appear darker by comparison.  For this though, it's a simple matter : turning a light on and seeing that light make things darker.  It's wrong in the only sense of the word :p.

Adarias is correct.  But personally on the edge of the stone I wouldn't make it illuminate at all (don't make it lighter but especially don't make it get darker) because it is very unlikely the light would wrap around the edge of the stone in this case, it would probably just brighten the front face of the rock.

I'm essentially trying to say that without the "or get darker" bit which is just plain wrong.
