Oh man, nice job MAH BOIIIIII! :D :y: I like the daytime Goblin coloring more but he's not standing out enough, there's two ways to fix this problem: Do something with the background like take away some contrast or change the colors a bit or you can make the goblin more colorful. His gunfire is a light source so uh, yeah, hopefully you get what I'm saying.

Awesome work, but the blast/explosion/thing needs some serious work. I'd AA it, and mess with the colors and shape of it a lot more. I love the troll, though.

Perhaps some ambient lighting? Such a big blast must reflect some light on the gun/goblin.
Very lovely piece of work I must say. finish it.

I really like this, but... 74 colors? That's far too many. You don't need a different color ramp for each object. The tiny blades of grass, for instance, can use the same greens as the troll. You can get rid of some of the brighter greens there too since you're only shading small areas.

The way the troll is shaded makes it look very flat, and the blast shouldn't make half the gun brighter. The original was more accurate.

I reduced the colors to 14 and gave it a darker atmosphere to make the bright gunfire stand out more. Hope that'll give you some ideas. :)

Arachne, your update certainly makes the scene look more dramatic, but I personally think it's too dark. That contrast from the highlight to dark on the leg is quite hard to look at. I think something in between locust's latest update and your edit would be less harsh to the eyes.
Locust, I actually loved the first blast graphic you had: the styled, angular flame more than the newer ones. Just a thought ::).

made it darker and more correctly shaded after Arachne's advice. Went with a real fireblast.
i have never spent as much time on a single piece like this before...

think im gonna shade more around his waist and side...

my computer contrastes are adjusted to diplay more nuances of dark kolors. This piece doesnt look too dark, your computerscreen is too dark...

update bonus:

Sorry, dude, that's not how it works. You should adjust your monitor to the proper settings, because what may look good/bad to you will probably look completely different to everyone else.

And that piece is too dark.

Also, with such a bright blast, where's the lighting on the rocks?

My monitor is adjusted pretty well, although it has a very high contrast ratio, i can see all but one of the near-blacks. I have to say it's too dark as well. Also, maybe the cock of the gun should be starting to go backward, if the muzzle flash is already that far in progress.

here's a nice ref for yah.

I really like the rendering on the rocks, but the colors don't do it any justice!

All the points on lighting aside (I agree it is a little too dark right now), I am not very fond on the current fireblast. I looks more like a hadoken coming on the way of the gun. Arachne's kind on the right boat, but I would still work some on that.

There is something almost freudian/erotic on that image, what with the slow motion and recoil. I hate my dirty mind at times.

This piece looks pretty tight. :y:
But don't you think its strange that the muzzle flash is darker than it's reflected light?
