Title: Game Idea - Bboying (Breakdancing)
Post by: Andy Tran on July 25, 2007, 07:28:29 am
Bboying (Breakdancing) never dies. This is just a game based on the dance style. It's not really a real game, just a idea. I must stress on the terminology, it's BBOYING. Not breakdancing. Breakdancing is a media term made up by a reporter, not the real guys who created the dance itself.

 Game Title: Super Cypher Showdown
 Genre: Fighting/Dancing
 System: GBA
Gameplay: A Turn based game to test your skills in dancing.  Each dancer takes turn to show off their move "sets". The winner depends on the judge of the game. Players choose up to 8 dancers. Each dancer with their own moves of breaking and "style".

Looks like I could buy it from wal-mart right now! All I suggest is that you make the outlines for the charecters (the white outline) thicker in the 2nd screenshot ie:

The building looks very out-of-perspective in the third and fourth pictures. Also, in the title screen, the text is very strenuous to read at 1x.

I'd say the text needs a little work - try looking at Courier at 12pt without aa - or any number of pixel-fonts out there for some design ideas.

hey andy!  fun idea, the player sprite in the last frame is great.  But (here comes the blunt) everything else is awful!  The title screen text and background is really terrible, and basically unreadable.  Not sure what "cypher" actually has to do with bboying or breakdancing?  The player select screen's generic anime portraits are boring and silly, and the UI is too muddy and indistinct.  The perspective on the background is extreme and confusing, and the crowd/audience are not only cloned but appear to have been made in about 4 minutes, especially their pants.  Finally while I am loving that player sprite in the last frame, his hat looks more like a bucket hat in that frame, than the baseball cap present in the others.  Can't wait to see some revisions on these, they're gonna be awesome!

cypher = rap battle

I agree with pretty much everything which has been said, although i like the way that hat morphs (looks like a motion blur).

Would like to see this take form more :D

Thanks guys. Yeah that logo is pretty much like a sketch. I was too lazy to make it stand out. It's like a sketch. For the word cypher, it means an open circle formed by the dancers to have their battles.

We must be from pretty different places; here "cypher" has nothing to do with bboying, it's freestyling :P

Figured as much about the Title, though part of me asks why show it then?....:P

Update on the character selection screen:

 -Added Mr. Wiggles
 -Thickened the white outlines
 -Slight fix on Mark's face.

Whatup guys. I did some bit of update. Added a new character and added some more power moves. New bg. Here's the update.

Hehe I turned Wiggles into a powerhead in this battle.

Bboy Red does his footwork after the toprock.

Bboy Red finishes off with a Head Hollow, but only got him a bit better than Wiggles. Time ran out and Wiggle won.

like the concept, but you seem to just be adding more stuff not listening to peoples critiques and repeating mistakes they have pointed out. the last 3 screens especially, inconsistency in bboy red's legs as in the top they are not outlined, doing footwork theres a black outline and the legs seem like twice as fat and arms twice as long. Same with wiggles' head spin, his legs seem nearly twice as long.

from a bboying point of view id say make the head hollow leaning over more, cause right now just looks like a headstand.

My suggestion would be to revise the original sprites using people in this threads critiques, before continuing on new characters etc.

Thanks everyone. My crew kinda cancelled the project awhile ago. Bboy.org had a lot of artists there who do stuff in computer related. CGing, programming, Graffiti CG, etc. Probably because we didn't have enough programmers. This stuff was more of a WIP stuff or just a sketch work. I'm thinking of making the game in iso view in the future so the player can see what the character is doing easier. Like doing a six step, toprock, airflare, mills, etc.

This guy's just bustin a toprock before he does his routines. It's what all bboys do before they get into their dirty stuff. I had reupdated the sprites bigger that time so it fits more of a fighting game feel.

Pretty sure that you'd know, but Sony just laid down two B-boy games (one for the PS2, one for the PSP). It's a tough concept to make work, because it's so rhythm-based (and yet, supposedly "freestyle"). That said, I much prefer your old-school look to what Sony did with its game. This last edit is a marked improvement in style to your earlier posts. Keep going. Even if you don't make the game, creating the sprites and characters could be a lot of fun.

Hi, so what happens in the game, I have to admit I haven't played a dancing game yet, (mind you some fighting games have good coreography!). So when you're up, do you press buttons on beat to do a whole move or what. I mean some moves might take a few beats to do?
As for the images, in my opinion, I prefer the original look closer to 8bit, but the newer one could end up like Final Fight or something, that'd be cool
