Title: 500 Hour Pixel Art Masterpiece?
Post by: chris-mcc on July 06, 2007, 09:05:24 pm
Someone sent me a link to this the other day. I looked it over for a while and I know it's several years old but I just had to post it here to see what others think. I did a search just to make sure i wasnt reposting things but theres a chance I missed it. (sorry if thats the case)

(Lense Flare is there as a "pallete", he didnt draw it, but since he's using MS paint he uses the colour picker to select colours for the sky from the lense flare picture)

I'll hold my opinion until some others check this out.

JPG! :'(
I think he might have been using this crap blurry format to cover for something lacking in his picatures. :-\

I remember this, a fair bit of it is pixelled, but if you're gonna blur and smudge parts, then save it as jpg, what is the point of pixelling any of the details?

I remember when I saw this for the first time about five million years ago and I thought it was absolutely mind blowing. Now it just looks like fishing for some asskissing on deviantart. Blargh.

Exactly my thoughts Evil-Ville.

I'm not even sure if he drew any of it. (Since the work in progress shots look like he just took a wide brush and painted over parts of the buildings. But theres no way that sky or water were done solely in MS paint using pixel art techniques.

And it frustrates me because I work hard to do the crap pixel art that I can do and this idiot just fakes his way through and a bunch of people bow down before him.

Edit: and who the heck is going to work on something for 500 hours and then save it in jpg and watch the details blur away?

Don't be frustrated, the only people he has bowing before him is a bunch of art rejects...aka DeviantArt.

Hmm. . . it actually reminds me of, again, TEHblahULITMATEblahM$yadaFAINTyadaPICTURE (http://www.swmoore.com/kt_ultimatepaint.html). It gained a lot of and would probably gain more pants-pissing worshippers, but it's just wasting time for me. The guy wanted to show off and he got his five hundred hours wasted (almost three weeks, if that's, of course, true) on something which can be done quicker by a more efficient medium. He also ruined a half of his work by saving the crap as a JPG. I hardly call it a masterpiece.

I don't get it. Imho the problem is not that it's not pixel art, but that it's plain ugly. For example I think if you can produce the same result with colour reducing than there's no reason in pixeling it. The thing is though, that you mostly can't get as "good" results with other techniques. For such a piece that's supposed to have a smooth sky and things like that I would never use pixel techniques, but instead photoshop it. What this quy did was mixing these techniques in a very bad way. These smuged areas look so out of place between the pixeled stuff, and artwise this piece is not intresting neither. I think pixel art is not there to get people saying "WOW you did that all pixel by pixel???" but instead to get a unique result that you couldn't achieve with other methods.

As much as I loathe DA, there are lots of really good artists on there and it actually helps if you just wanna get your stuff seen by many.

Too bad all the crap that gets shown on the front is naruto/bleach/dragonball/final fantasy 7 fanart(badly done, might I add) while all the good art is shoved into the back of the wagon.

I won't say it's traced from a photo, but at least a photo of a view from the Rialto bridge has been heavily used as a reference. I've stood on that bridge and recognize the view.  (http://www.tomoko-yamamoto.com/photographs/travel/Italy/Venice/Grand_Canal_2_Rialto_700webdomain.jpg)  (not my photo) If you're gonna put 500 hrs of work into a pic, why not create something original instead of just copying a photo???!!!  :blind:

In response to the conversation stemming off towards the guy that made "The Ultimate Paint Picture", he actually doesn't seem to be an arrogant guy at all from what I saw when I came across his site a while back, and he's not a pixel artist, just some guy that felt like doodling in paint a lot. He didn't ask for, and probably didn't expect, the positive responses so I'd suggest we don't make assumptions about him just because he was in the limelight when we know there are better pixel artists out there.

On a sidenote the work wasn't originally jpg, appears it's just a linkjacked version because I clearly remember seeing it pixel for pixel at one point.
