Title: Some pixels
Post by: Aline on July 01, 2007, 03:49:03 am
My work didn't get better, but I did only few pixels since my last post. Maybe it's because I'm getting addicted to Neopets.

Cherrim, I posted this one in DeviantArt a while ago.

Animated, which is pretty rare in my pixel arts,

My first isometric pixel, I didn't chade itt too much, it would kill the simplicity idea.

My most recent one, I think it's cute. :3

Well, critiques are welcome, but I don't know if this will help me.

thats... not isometric. isometric is 1/2 (rise/run) hope that explained it without me having to find a picture..

and the last one is VERY cute but the feet kinda kill the cuteness.

Actually it is.  It's just 1:1 ratio instead of 2:1.  Very uncommonly used but still isometric I think.

I thought that at first too but take another look. / / those lines are 1:1 but the \\ lines are much different 4:3?

I don't think it matters what angles the lines are drawn at. Isometric is just projection where no measurements are distorted due to perspective, I believe. So I would call that piece isometric. Though I could be wrong...

As for critique (which always help), I would suggest using either 1:1 or 1:2 ratios for isometric pieces so you don't end up with jagged looking lines. The black outlines in the iso piece exacerbate the jaggedness, also.

The shading on the cat is inconsistent. The green head is shaded almost as if lit from below, whilst the highlights in the eyes suggest a lightsource above. And then the poofy neck is shaded as if sort of lit from the side, sort of. You need to concentrate on the position of your lightsource(s).

The bottom one is alot better, but shading is still a little off, primarily on the feet. The palette for this piece could use some differentiation, the white and near-white yellow are too close together, I think. There's too much highlight on the tongue, also.

Actually, I believe you're thinking of orthographic (no perspective distortion). Isometric projection follows a particular viewing angle, as does planometric/axonometric projection.

I agree, though, either 2:1 or 1:1 diagonals would probably work better for you. I don't really have much to add beyond what's already been said.
