Maybe a little late, as it seems you're taking this in a different direction now, but I did a bit of an edit:

Basically just some shading/colour alterations. I actually like the original much better than the new version. While the new one's more anatomically correct, it's still pretty stylized, and for me, if you're going to stylize it you may as well go all the way.

One thing to keep in mind: in your original (and your update) the white is wasted, in terms of shading. Even at, like, 10x zoom it's still barely distinguishable from the yellow. Even in my edit, the white is wasted. Maybe try using a darker colour as a mid tone?

I like the new one better than the old one so I'll stick with that one.I changed the mid tone and added a darker shade.I also used white alittle more.

Arne's palette:(http://i68.photobucket.com/albums/i15/kasmember17/ddd-21.gif)

I like the last one better. But that does mean I have to break out of the 8-bit color pallet that I was using.

Looks pretty good. Nice pallet. There's just a couple things that look a bit odd to me: the maxilla (the part with the upper teeth) should be a couple of pixels wider I think, with a couple more teeth showing, and the top of the skull should extend a bit higher.

Yes, I agree with squirrelborg, you could buffer in-between the teeth with darker shades, instead of black, to trick the eye into believing that there are more teeth there.

The contrast between light and dark will make the teeth more defined and stylized, while lower contrast will make the brain believe that there are a lot of teeth there, since there is color there, and the brain knows that there are teeth present in those areas of a skull, and fills us in with that information.

That's one of the things one has to master with them pixels, to make details out of almost nothing, and make stuff happen in the nothing-space between pixels. It's especially important in animation. Heh.

It's not bad, but I think the texture has overtaken it a bit too much. With 8 colours on a piece this small you definitely don't need dithering, and I'd say its actually detrimental on this piece, perhaps even on all pieces of this size. The white highlights are scattered too much throughout the form of the skull, flattening it and making it appear more noisy. I reckon transition your highlights more in accordance to the form, and kill the dithering.

Apart from that its really not too bad for a first pixel art attempt  :y:

EDIT: Oh yeah, it could really use some AA here and there, especially for the nose and teeth.

Much better.  :y: The only thing you should do now is remove a bit of the dithering; too much texture imo.
