Title: Iso Fun? Oh, boy....
Post by: madartiststan on May 17, 2007, 04:42:44 am
Tried it. Loved it.  :D Iso art is incredibly fun and just looks so amazing once you've done someting decently worthwhile. So I figured I'd try to make an isometric sprite...wrong! My outline looks a bit weird and I was wondering if I was on the right pathway towards getting that isometric look and feel?

Alot of inspiration for the standing position came from Adarias sprites for Partisans.

You haven't quite achieved the angle.  You have to remember that isometric art is partially overhead. Right now you sprite is platform view.  It might help you to draw in the isometric square to have a good frame of reference when drawing the sprite and keeping it in the angle.

Can't really tell right now which one fits the view better(need sleep), Hope it helps ^_^

Its great to get quick responses! =D

Thanks JWW, I knew something was off about the angle, just couldn't figure out exactly what it was, will have an edit in a few. Your edit cleared up alot for me. :)

Working on it, still the view is off a bit.

Take a look at the placement of JWW's edit's eyes again.

All the same coloring problems from your previous little dude from the other thread.  your colors are way way too close together, you don't have a well defined light source, and you don't have well defined planes or surfaces on your sprite!

Tried to fix the eye placemet and viewing. Will edit the colors Adam.

The line is at level with a perfect horizontal line, yet the sprite is angled to be standing at a 2:1 pixel ratio. The eyes should follow the angle of the sprite, so the left eye(our left) should be higher than the right.

Good pointing that out Dusty.  ;)

E: I'm almost happily satisfied with this, save a few arm and chest tweaks I need to do. Whatcha think?

Bump.

Been putting it off for a couple weeks now, bad. Should've started when the pencil was still fresh. But I've been working on an up view for my iso sprite, tried to apply the same principles and actually started out with something somewhat satisfactory the first go round.

Could really use some crits around the leg areas especially as that's where I'm having the most issues.  :yell:

i dont know if it's intentional, but i would like to point out that the arms and hands horizontal position in relation to each other is different compared to the legs. This causes the upper body to look out of sync with the iso perspective. Hopefully i described the issue clearly.

Your doing really well..i like it..i think all you need to improve on is the angles of your lines but other than that...awesome!

I think I addressed the view issue, it's just to me the stance/pose in general looks abnormal.

Your back view looks better but the front view still has the exact same angle problem.  The feet are offset by approx. 5 pixels, yet the hands are offset in the front view by what appears to be 1 pixel.  This causes confusion for the viewer!

Ah, finally addressed that issue Adam and it looks loads better! Added some quick shading to the back sprite, as soon as I feel comfortable with it I shall attempt at running!  :hehe:

But for the time being it looks a little weird to me:

try to choose a consistent light source when shading. Also, I think you could do with some more contrast. And also, if you intend to use this i some kind of game, a nice dark outline would do it some good.
