Title: [CC][Feedback] Top down dragon sprite
Post by: startselect on October 31, 2019, 02:52:41 pm
I made a dragon sprite which I'm looking for critique on, personally I feel the green limb parts of the wings are the weakest part, not sure what to do with them. They are so large but to thin for me to successfully texture or add some interest to, so now they are just flat and quite pillow shaded. Please help :D all C&C welcome and appreciated!

notes: the shading on the wing membranes closest to the camera was too dark, making them look more bunched up/folded than the ones that were actually bunched up and folded. I removed those dark areas so that the more stretched-out membranes were more lit up.

I also TRIED to add some scale texture to the tail to match the legs, but I don't think I was terribly successful there.

Overall, i think there's a lot of overly dark shadows on this, but it's hard to tell without environmental cues if the lighting's off or it's just an artefact of a lack of context.

Thanks for the feedback! Finally had time to get back to this piece and tried following your pointers.

I lightened the wing membranes, not quite as much but quite substantially. Also tried texturing both the tail as you tried and the green arm-parts of the wings. Looks kinda like spots rather than scales though :S
I'd also like to ask for your advice regarding the focus of dragon, right now it's sort of at the top of the neck, but I would like it to be on the head. I could refrain from using the lightest color on the neck to make the head pop more and grab the focus but I kinda like having the hardest/sharpest parts be the lightest color to convey the texture of the different parts of the dragon. So any ideas would be welcome!

tried to increase focus on the head by reducing the "detail-pop" on everything else, as well as widening and pushing back the fore-claw stance so that it wasn't overlapping the head as much. You can probably still improve upon what i've done, but reducing colorcount on non-relevant details to make it slightly less distinct may help draw the eye down more.

one other thing you might want to try for that if you want to keep it this complex though is some sort of environmental cue. scorch marks around the face, for example, to funnel the player into it?
