Title: Does the 50/50 dithering bug your eyes too ?
Post by: fil_razorback on April 21, 2007, 12:47:55 pm
Hi all, I've been wondering for a while about my vision : when I see a large 50/50 dithering pattern at zoom100%, the screen looks glitchy to me. I see some horizontal lines running accros the pattern (and moving !)
However, the illusion stops when I zoom in.

Is it my screen or my eyes or everyone's eyes ?

Example :

I think it's everyone's eyes.  The effect is probably more pronounced or less pronounced, depending on the colors that are used.

Doesn't bug me at 1x, but i think my monitor is so old they just get blended together... I am at a pretty high resolution, too.

Are you using a crt or a tft? did you try changin the hz of your monitor?
Sounds to me like a tft that isn't propper calibrated to the graficcardssignal clock/phase.
Also for example I know that a friends monitor isn't able at all to display 1280*1024 at 60 hz (works fine at higher hz but at 60 hz you see these lines everywhere not only on 50% patterns ;) )

at 1x the only impression I get is that this is a great texture for a rug.

I'm behind a tft.
No lines visible.
What i get though is a solid colour if I zoom in clicking on that image, no more dithering pattern.
I only experience this when zooming into pngs though. (not all. I think it's the 32bit pngs which do that. This one has 32bit...)
Am I the only one who gets that?

I see horizontal and vertical lines, not 1 solid color

I've got 2 computers, each with different quality monitors:
On my current one, it's a solid color (Pixel art appears fuzzy on this one, too.)

On the other one, it's, like Helm said, "ruggy," and I can see alternating horizontal lines. As if the dither were done with quadruple/quintuple-wide pixels.

On my laptop it seems fine, but on my CRT monitor it's all "eye-buggy".  Strange. :-\

I have an LCD screen and I see the rug like texture as well. (like so (http://www.lastingimpressions.com/graphics/prembpapers/plaid.jpg))

Has to do with the frequency (refresh rate) of the monitor. One the one I am currently at (LCD) I got mad horizontal flickerbars when in 75 hz mode, in 60 hz it is fine.

I see pink nearly vertical lines shaking rapidly.
1024x768, 60Hz on a 15inch CRT.

60hz on a CRT? That's not very healthy to your eyes, you know.

generally having fine particles shot at you is not very healthy.
(eh, i guess having glass in the way helps?)

Anyway, on my new LCD the 50/50 dither is more distinguishable, i can see the two different colors a little bit more, but when i scroll, or it moves, it blinks rapidly.
