Title: [WIP] A young lad. update3.
Post by: alkaline on April 11, 2007, 01:16:17 am

this is what I have so far. the head I already have all detailed out, but the body's just blocked in and refined a bit. body colors aren't what I'm definitely using, i was just using different colors to differentiate for now. I'm still not sure what path to take with this.

crits would be appreciated before i start defining the body somewhat or whatever i'm going to do  :)

i think it would look good if he was wearing like a blue uniform or something...but i dunno. very nice head by the way, i just think the neck is....too big.

Actually, it's pretty normal. Some people can have oddly above-average sized necks.

Doesn't look very long to me in the first place to be honest. He's just not wearing a shirt without something around the neck.

I think miscdude meant the neck looked to thick, not too long. I sort of agree, and I did a small edit (hope you're cool with that, alk):

I did a bit of a general edit on the face, too. You had some banding going on in places (in places your AA... overlapped, for lack of a better term and caused blurriness), especially in the hair. The chin, too, I edited, as I thought it looked a bit small.

The pose, colouring, all that stuff looks pretty good so far. Looking forward to seeing it finished. ;D

P.S.: looking at my edit now, I think your original hair is quite a bit better. The chin, neck, etc. changes should still be... somewhat valid, at least if not entirely useful. :P

thanks guys, i see what you mean about the neck. i think your edit lost a bit of the boyish charm tremulant, it's probably mainly the mouth area that you changed that made it look like that I think. I like your hair, I didn't know if mine was too blocky or not. Actually I'm still not sure which one would work better. You're right about the general AAing, I might've overdone it a bit.

I'll see what I can do, thanks for the input.

blerngh. update. clothes are a rough draft, but boring. any ideas or suggestions? pretty stuck, heh.

i'm not sure how to translate the smooth detail in the head to the body.

oh, and i'm bad at clothing folds.

his pose and clothing dont match the youth in his face.....other than its good, but the jeans should be dithered for texture.

For this piece you seem to be using straight ramps, which will make detailed texture on the clothes hard to do.  I'd suggest adding a couple of variant colors, like a sort of fade for the jeans and some saturated colors in the jacket.  I know Helm just tends to dither in various colors on his larger pieces, and it looks nice.  You should try it    :)

Bring his left (our right) eye in slightly.

This is looking really good. I like the subdued shading. Also like the face design, and the posture is nice.

You seem to be doing ok on the folding department, some aren't too accurate (mainly jacket on the torso) but they work well.

Design wise, i suggest giving his (under)shirt one of them currently fashionable big-ass bold designs and color schemes, like a golden dragon on black shirt, or some purple abstract lettering/graphics over dark magenta shirt's fabric, or something of the sort.

Maybe also add some accessories, like necklaces, waist chains, etc. All within your fashion preferences of course :)

For the pants, you could take a look at current designs: designers are adding crazy things to pants, from slightly changing the cut to adding pockets with weird shapes, mixing different materials, adding rips, etc etc... Also, you could add some wear marks/highlights of a blue towards yellow/green tint, would look really nice :)

misc - I'm not sure if dithering would work. but thanks.

fawel - i've been working on the palette for a while, but I don't know how to unify it all well...so yeah. gonna have to tweak that color more  :-\

faceless - done. better?

turbo - hmm, accessories, maybe that could work. I'll add something later if needed. but first, getting the dang shading and colors down... D:

so yeah. I dunno. yea, I know the outlines are contrasting in brightness, I'll fix that up

If the right (ours) hand is in a similar position as the left - hence the same length - then you need to portray the bending better as it reads pretty straight right now. Yell if you want edit. His chest is pretty skinny for his arms too. Or his arms too beefy for his chest, choose.

The folds aren't very realistic. You need to work on that. I might give you an edit if I find the time...

uhmm, yeah, edits are much appreciated, I'm just guessworking it as I go along because of my lack of knowledge on that area anyways  :yell:

I think you should have gone the other direction with Helm's suggestion.
His legs look massive now, and his jacket doesn't really suit his new frame.

Hmm, I dunno if you meant for him to have a long shirt, but right now his torso looks really long compared to the legs. If the shirt is just long, maybe hide more of the pants under the shirt?

Hello, glad to see you're still working on this.

I don't mind the arms/legs lengths personally, somehow this has its harmony. What I do mind is that the way the hands themselves are done shows confusion in how hands are generaly drawn and hesitation in applying a realistic model to them. They're just stubs with short stubby random fingers on them, which doesn't work, obviously. Check some reference when in doubt as usual!

welp, I tried fixing them, heh I kind of forgot about the hands and just colored them the way they were.

I probably didn't even fix them well really, hands like this isn't my strong spoooooot.

The right hand is okay, I think the left is smallish and needs work and definition still.
