Title: Ghost Star
Post by: yosh64 on April 05, 2007, 12:40:11 pm
hey

Well I thought I'd start a thread, and just upload screens and inform yas of my progress. I think I will only do this for the first stage/area, as I don't want to spoil the game for anyone :). Ohh, yea the game is called "Ghost Star", and you may realise why once you complete the game :).

I don't want to reveal any more at this time, but I'm really quite happy with the concept of the game and such ^_^.

This is the first area of the game, underground inside a well... although it tends to look a bit like a castle... these are just the very beginnings, so don't get too fussed over it or whatever.

Yep, basically just 3 colors per tile, not including transparency :). I find it quicker this way, and I'm happy with what can be done... I think it might also make it easier to keep a consistent style.

hey

Well the last reply/post seems to have gone??? Hmm, I'll just quote my original response to it. Note, mods can delete this reply/post if they like...

Firstly, I pixel with mtPaint :). Well I actually generated a big grid in Gimp, which I use to get the tiles in place.

Although long ago I coded a little tile level editor, I now prefer to create/pixel my maps as an image. So I will code a program to extract every unique tile, and convert to my map format :).

But yea, I am just coding the game in C/C++, using SDL (I don't think I will bother using OpenGL with it), which is a great open source and platform independent alternative to DirectX. Well I coded a little 2D game library long ago, but I think I will update this alot when I get into coding the game.

@el zilcho: Yea, I meant it was your post that had gone, not mine, hehe :).

This lacks - you guessed it - depth. The only way I can suggest to fix this is to add more colors.

@helm: You really know where to hit someone where it hurts . Well I read your advise a lil while back, and I took it pretty bad... luckily I was able to get focused on pixelling again. Now that I have calmed down, I do see your point :).

Well, I myself are quite happy with the light, and form of everything... but after looking at ptoing's mockup, and seeing the colors... I think alot more depth can be added by seperating things into different colors. If this makes any sense? But I will leave this for now.

Ohh, and another update.

This sure is taking me some time, the chain took quite a bit to get it okay.

Do you mean know how to give critique on stuff that could be fixed? If so, thanks. Otherwise, I don't desire to hurt you or discourage you at all.

There are many ways to take critique, and I can't feel responsible for the more negative ones. I know I post critique with good intentions. I've been around long enough to know this is what matters most. Please don't guilt-trip me, thanks :)

Yep, I mean you hit the bullseye in regards to what's wrong with my pixels. I was actually thinking of something I read about Shiguru Miyamoto when I wrote this, hehe. But nevermind.

Sorry, didn't mean anything towards you, I meant to say that I took your good critique in a bad way.

edit
Maybe to help you understand... I personally regard depth in pixels as very important, and sadly I took it personally to hear I lacked this :\. But yea, I'm very glad of your advise ^_^.

Another thing is that I thought it was a good idea to use just 3 shades :\, and actually advised someone in another thread to use 3 shades if they wanted to complete a game, although I might be taking things out of context or whatever here. But yea, I'm sorry and look forward to more advise from you in the future.

I don't think it's a good idea in most cases, though it can be a workable restriction, but more challenging than easy, for me, and certainly most game tiles need more than that if they want both depth and smoothness. If you want just depth, you could even have depth with 3 colors, but black would have to be one of them, or generally, something very very dark, I think.

And that's the perils involved in giving advice. Best keep it to yourself until you're more sure of it, or at least propose an opinion for discussion instead of suggesting it like a valid, good thing to do.

Yep, I'm glad to see in that thread that there was someone (philipptr), that corrected, and gave greater perspective about the issues with the advise I proposed.

That's a very good idea.

Anyhows I might go sleep, 6:01am... But yea, thanks again... I feel alot clear minded now or something :), as I now see and understand more of my mistakes, in regards to both pixelling and my interaction with this message board, and even things in general.

I like what you've done, but I agree that adding more colors would really improve it. The rope is great, and I really like the outlines, it just seems like one more color would really help.

Good job using OpenGL too :),

why not use some dithering  ???

may be this is your personal style  :o

btw the colors in those graphics looks solitary

No, don't dither! I'm enjoying the clean smoothness of these tiles. And with everything so angular, I don't think large transitionless palette jumps will hurt at all.
I like this...not quite sure what I'm looking at, but I like it. :y:

Another update... I've been going quite slow, and been a bit stuck trying to figure out how the level should go.

I thought I'd reveal a little more about the game, well about the main character. The main character is a ghost, and has balloons that keep him from being pulled to the center of earth. The balloons don't pop strait away, one at a time they gradually change colors, and eventually pop, depending on the damage taken. Anyhows I will leave it at that for now.

(http://img258.imageshack.us/img258/254/ghostjh0.png) -> (http://img253.imageshack.us/img253/6576/ghostsd4.png) -> (http://img176.imageshack.us/img176/193/ghostjg7.png) -> (http://img136.imageshack.us/img136/89/ghosthg1.png) -> (http://img81.imageshack.us/img81/5023/ghostmovemt9.png)
This is ghost, but this is not final.

another edit
(http://img175.imageshack.us/img175/6843/ghost22jq6.png) -> (http://img157.imageshack.us/img157/7329/ghost22ax0.png) -> (http://img246.imageshack.us/img246/3825/ghost22moverf5.png)
I just pixeled ghost again, slightly larger this time.

and another...
I think I'll make it so you only have one balloon, and have it's movement/rotation completly dynamic and independant of the player. Hmm, I think I will use the larger sprite also :).
