no, but it's made of pixels. it's the broader digital art type of thing.

yes but every picture on a computer is made of pixels, this isn't any different, it's just a picture with a photoshop filter too it...

Yeah, you have to take it at face value. To me, that site is an inadequate source of information on what 'Pixel Art' really is. And yeah, in the broader sense, anything digital is 'Pixel Art', but if you noticed, one of the entries was an oil painting!!

I mean, sure, they title the site with PIXEL in the name, but they go on to state that they are spotlighting art from video games. One of the works looked like a sloppy Photoshop/Painter work, and it probably looked better in the game rather than on its own. This is comparable to a gallery for one or two individual frames from a pixelled animation, or a fine art gallery featuring GUI's. The 'work' is not anything especially noteworth... ah, but art is subjective :P

Any time I see SpikeTV sponsoring something, I get a bit uneasy about it. Same with their video game awards, or most of the programming for G4 TV. By no means does this corporate facing legitimize the message they're trying to portray, though making our art form 'legitimate' is an issue Tsugumo recognized, so I suppose they share the same goal? I don't think they're doing a service by being so general/vague about it and at the same time having the backing of a Los Angeles Art Museum. That should invoke some credibility to it, including the established persons listed as the jurors of the galleries. I'd love to know what the GDR members think of this issue of art in games and games as art.

Anyhow, we're still working towards awareness ourselves, and will continue the work laid out ahead. :)

I think it's all concept art, none of it to be used in-game, just used to set the tone, mood, and setting of the game.  I've seen people that can whip out stuff like that in, like, two hours. It's pretty insane sometimes.  Of course, sometimes you can tell it was done in two hours, but quality of execution generally isn't the point of concept art.

alrighty - so i just had a costume party come up and i couldn't fugure out any original ideas for a quickie costume....then finally i remembered a mini waldo pixel done over in the pixel joint gallery.  With that, an old shirt, a beanie, and some spray paint I became the infamouse WALDO!!!!

whenever i saw somebody taking a picture of somebody else, i'd jump into the background without them knowing like this:

and this:

and here is a very poor quality movie gif of me doing the "nuh uh girl-friend" move:

PS - none of you halloween freaks can steal my mysterful costume idea or i'll...........do ........ something

Hehe. It'll pass, don't worry. When that large amounts of people play the same game, it won't last for long at all. Me? I'm the only person I know (except for the guy whom I got it from) that plays it. I AM very good, in my own words... At least/especially when it comes to swordfighting.

It's funny, actually. Yesterday I was doing an all-swords game, and this one girl constantly complimented me on my sword usage (I think we were both lv. 10 then)... and eventually she was like "What sword IS that you're using?" And I'm like "The... um... the one you start with." and half of the room is like "omg"

And today. lv. 13 and a half now. Was in a room with players between level 12 and 18. Someone eventually decided to ask me what weapon I was using, since I was among the lowest level in the room and had the third most kills at the end of the match. And I'm like "The... um... the one you start with." and he's like "omg"

But yeah. I think I owe it all to Ninja Gaiden. And a bit of Unreal Championship 2.

True, but like this, I can use the Maxwell LX30 or whatever it's called, and it's also a sign of how much ass I've kicked in the past... well, week. I think I've been playing it for about a week...

The Maxwell rifle is insane. I'd call it overpowered, but then I realized it isn't thanks to the level limits.

[edit] Ooh, you're into advanced techniques, eh? Well, you're trying to be, at least... Lemme tell you, with a decent ping, those do NOTHING to me. You know the jump-dash-jump-dash thing? It's much easier to JUST dash, and it's faster as well. Yes, it's true! I was trying out some of that advanced stuff earlier. Some of it makes you... well... yeah... But most of them can easily be pwned by pure accuracy on my part. Besides, I think it's really poor game design that. Worst thing is, Maiet are acting like it's intentional.. apparently,  your level of skill is reflected off how many hours you've spent trying to fuse annoying key combinations into your muscle memory... [/edit]

Not really. TONS of techniques, though. Check GameFaQs or the threads on the official forum.

Most important thing one needs to know, is about "advanced techniques", which are virtually just random glitches, but that people have learned to string together to lethal combos, such as the Slashshot and the Butterfly. Even worse is... the game developers obviously find those glitches cool, and consider them not only valid game tactics, but pretty much necessary... which sucks... playing a game, other than rhythm-based ones, should NOT involve having your fingers cramping up from too much keypressing...

Yeah, they should remove cancels from fighting games too
and powersliding from racing games as well

and remove the better statistics teams from sports games, make them all equal
just make all games with directional pads and 3 buttons, no comboes.

Oh, come on. Mid-air sword-cancelling a dash, then blocking the melee and repeating the jump-dash in order to 1. Move at dashing-speed toward your enemy, 2. Jump constantly to become harder to hit, 3. Be able to cause melee damage just by being close to someone, and 4. Blocking all incoming shots from the front, AT THE SAME TIME... is a BIT of an overpowered move. Especially since you'd have to spend literally hours trying to learn it before you can do it smoothly, meaning unless you're toast against advanced-techniquers if you don't _want_ to spend hours trying to get that W+Space+double-W+click+shift+space+double-W+click+shift string down as fast as possible.

I don't mind techniques and combos at all. They're fun. But some glitches should be left glitches, and not be introduced as actual gameplay. Like spaceflying in F-Zero GX. Sure, it's fun to do, but it's questionable if it's supposed to happen. See, without advanced techniques, GunZ would have a pretty decent rock-paper-scissors system going on between the weapons. All good games have that kind of system in one way or another. But with the introduction of advanced techniques that combine everything into one move, that rock-paper-scissors deal goes straight to hell, which results in shaky balance in gameplay. What bugs me the most is that Maiet seem to think they did a wonderful job not fixing those glitches, though. The newest trailer is pretty much ONLY advanced techniques.

I guess they don't like people who think the game should be the way they once tried to make it, and favor the ones who exploit as many techniques as they can...

Title: Re: The Official Pixelopolis Off-Topic Thread
Post by: Sawtooth on October 23, 2005, 06:33:41 pm
It's remarkably different from anything they put out before.  Check out their recent remix work; it's very similar in style to the campfire headphase.  Specifically, their remixes for Beck (Broken Drum), Boom Bip (Last Walk Around Mirror Lake), and cLOUDDEAD (Dead Dogs Two).  There are actually guitars on this album!  Also, it's more 'chill-out' than anything else they've ever done.  There are lots of half-heard distorted voices again, but the context tells me they're probably not talking about satan this time.  In terms of complexity, it's somewhere between Geogaddi and Music Has the Right to Children.  Lots of tape fuzz and some of the smoothest synths I've ever heard.  It's worth the time to hunt down Japan-only bonus track, too (it's called Macquarie Ridge).

Also, check out Caribou's The Milk of Human Kindness, I view it as kind of a companion album to The Campfire Headphase.

Also, Helm: rock on!  Have you checked out Andrew Plotkin's stuff at all?  It's great.  So is Adam Cadre's.
Title: Re: The Official Pixelopolis Off-Topic Thread
Post by: Helm on October 23, 2005, 08:31:57 pm
not familiar with either, no. But I will look into. May I in turn, suggest that you listen to COH and Arovane?
Title: Re: The Official Pixelopolis Off-Topic Thread
Post by: Sawtooth on October 23, 2005, 09:29:05 pm
To be sure, Andrew Plotkin and Adam Cadre are IF writers (Plotkin in particular is a god among men, IF-wise).  Shade by Plotkin and Shrapnel by Cadre are quick, relatively quick and easy, but are immensely clever and mess with your head in a really good way.  Start with those.

And as long as we're ticking off the list of creators of nostalgic electronic music, I'll add Freescha, Casino Vs. Japan, Manitoba (caribou's original alias), Marumari, and Plone to the mix.  I haven't heard much of Plone, but the rest of them are really good.

And, completely unrelated: this is beautiful. (http://homepage.mac.com/utono/agnes12/birdland2_video.html)

Quote bothesucker: a damn humanity to eternal pain because i didnt know of that unquote

Now i'm here, and i hope this place is here to stay. Good luck to Benuel too, i remember you :) You're the dude who told me about Consoleclassix, amongst other things. Well, I'd better get pixeling!!!!

And what are those lots of strange icons on this forum, flash, email, font, formatting, sub&sup, well some look like sudoku.

Hey hey Skalle another discoverer of the new world.

Consoleclassix. Brilliant.

The news really needs to be spread about this place. It seems quite empty ATM. We need to tell all the old pix crew. Quite a few are here I see.

Something is missing though.

Ruleth Uno: There shalt not be anyeth Pixelith without an image of the most acclaimed Bruce Lee in his signature pose.

Peace out,

oh come on benuel, you actually do know Pixelation wasnt the end-all you make it out to be right?  ::)

I never really liked that banner either, or how Tsu didnt make a poll to decide which one of the entries (this one among them) would be selected, and he just put the bruce one just because

To solve the issue, a little song:
Imagine (To the tune of Imagine by John Lennon)

Imagine there's no pixelation.
Don't even want to try.
No phpbb thing below us.
Above us, Bruce Lee dies.

Imagine all the pixel artists.
Wiping a tear away.
Yoooo hooo oooohoooh.

Imagine there's no critiques.
Impossible to do.
Nothing to scream or cry for.
And no noob "look I stole a final fantasy sprite and am passing it off as my own" flame wars too.

Imagine all the pixel artists.
Their social lives in piece.....s.
Yoooo hooo oooohoooh.

You may say I'm a 2d fanboy.
I'm of a dying race.
I hope somebody will pity us.
And Bruce Lee will rule us all.

Imagine no MS Paint.
I wonder if anyone can.
No need for life or existance.
A 3D graphics whore's evil plan.

Imagine all the pixel artists.
Crying in their pixel soup.
Yoooo hooo oooohoooh.

You may say I'm a 2d fanboy.
I'm of a dying race.
I hope somebody will pity us.
And Bruce Lee will rule us all.

We <3 pixelation.

hee hee

I've just been tweaking my auto-vectorization plugins, which I finally got working.
Behold:

(using the same palette as the original.)

Now I just have to get rid of the occasional spot (scale2x should do that fine), and it will be perfected.
HAHAHAHAHA

It sure beats Madgarden's manual scaling method. The only thing is it doesn't much like dithering.

The blue was bad, zolth, so very bad. I still have nightmares about how messed up my zombie avatar's colours looked on that blue.

Mego, or something like that. Mugo? ... I don't remember either.

And Neota, since you are so artistically advanced: nice job.

mmph, okay. I haven't edited that for ages, actually. If you read my post, you would see it is 99% technology that is responsible for the newer 'huge' version. just a little configuration on my part.

Camus: Talk to you privately. (the rest of this post is still relevant)

Akira: These are the requirements currently:

1. Gimp 2.2.9
2. Python 2.4+
3. potrace (the backend; this is much better at tracing pixely stuff than autotrace*, but it only works on B/W pics. That is actually an advantage for my plugin.)

* autotrace is what the 'selection to path' plugin included in Gimp by default is based on.

optionally, my other plugins are helpful.
It will be faster on Linux, cause Linux has better startup times (due to excellent disk caching i think)

My plugin provides the following:
 * a command to automatically vectorize the picture, with a vector for each color region
 * the reverse, a command to automatically rasterize a set of vectors (the color is encoded in the name)
 * also for nicety, a command that just wraps potrace and functions as a usually more likeable version of 'Selection to path'.

However
This is about the only of my many plugins that I am not prepared to give you yet. I need to sort out this patenting business first.
Technically I could prevent someone else from patenting just by having well distributed prior art (ie this plugin), but I am undecided yet as to the course I'll take.

people come here looking for artists, but where is a good place to go if I'm looking for programmers? especially RTS programmers.

Gamedev.net for PC programmers
GBAdev.org for GBA programmers
flashkit.com for Flash actionscript  programmers

that's all I can think of Xanth.

Step 1: Go here (http://www.laco.com)

Step 2: Search through various products (markers, specifically)

Step 3: Write down the product number of the marker you want (or the lubricant/heating sealant if that's how you roll)

Step 4: At the top, roll your mouse over "Contact" and then click "Request Free Sample"

Step 5: Fill out the form

Step 6: Click Submit

Step 7: Wait for your marker/lubricant/sealant to arrive

Step 8: Thank Evan.

That stuff's heavy duty, what with material safety data sheets and all.
