So I'm working on an RPG with strategy elements, and I decided to take another shot at the standard issue RPG character sprite. I started out with a 8-color greyscale image, and tried to add color to it. Unfortunately, I'm no good at this :'(
I'm pretty happy with the shape and look of it, but I need help with the shading and finding a good palette. Please, if you can do anything to improve this sprite, go for it.
Much appreciated!

Well, it looks all right, but i made an edit to show you that afew things can be improved.
*there are to many colors so i fixed that.
*It needed AA so i AA'd it.

They look excellent. There's no need to AA it. Very Pokemon-ish.

I really like this template. simple and clean, maybe too many colors, but they could be easily reduced.
Besides the fact that sprites in general dont have any AA on the outline, these 45° dont need any AAing. I would only AA 45° lines as part of circles or curves. Also I wouldn't change the inner outlines to black as tacky did it.
-
I also dig the simplified look.
Aside from some more contrasting shadows i relaly like your palette as well.
i can't stress this enough:
45° angles dont need any AA
45° angles dont need any AA

45° angles dont need any AA
45° angles dont need any AA

I'm quite dubious about this whole anti-45° AA business which is constantly propagated. To me it seems like nothing more than a mere style criticism because the process itself simply doesn't work on a basis of that kind of discrimination, and so I don't think it should be repeated 6 times in a post, as if it were some kind of rule of thumb to be adhered to.
The sprite is nice. Perhaps a few too many colours though, and some colours are very close together.

Most of the time 45degree lines don't need aa, tho sometimes it can help, all depends.

Nonetheless, this being a sprite and all, unless it's gonna be always displayed on a white bg, doesn't need AA.
I think contrast could help, especially in defining the face from the shirt. Something's wierd with the arms...

Am I the only one who doesn't think those are "45 degree lines" per say and are meant to be part of a more curved square look? I wouldn't AA them like tacky did necessarily and specially if it's to be a sprite for a game but I don't see the point in all the talk about 45 degree angles.
As for the sprite I think it looks simple but nice. I wouldn't mind seeing a bit of hue shift and more contrast.

i think he feels a bit too chubby right now, i would shrink him horizontally by 1px.
made some other adjustments, jsut to make him a little more interesting IMO, take it or leave it.
