I am understand - that is sketch, but i not sure where you lightsource (he on over central person - this you say early :))) )

This is about light and shadow, red line show approximate boundary of shadow. And remove shadow from spear on back - it's break general perspective. Blue line is somments for form of columns.

About anatomy - it's a comic style ))) Maybe more large fist.
Intresting you paint mans or kids? Greedykidz - it's a metaphorical meaning? )))
