Title: Mecha sprite
Post by: Syn on March 17, 2007, 11:50:14 pm
Hope this works, I did a new account on imageshack and I dunno if it is going to show.

So basically, this is a test robot for the game I'm making(I hate saying that, it sounds so cliché). If you can see, the coloring sucks, dunno what shade of the color to use where. Not to mention how ugly yellow is on it. I did this a while ago and just gave up on it, but since I learned a lot the last time I posted something here, I said what the hell. I'm also basically unsure what to do for texture as well, I never really textured smooth surfaces(if you would call it texture... hmmm :-\). Any CC is appreciated and don't worry about offending me. Be harsh! lol ;D

I would like... lower the top of the boots a bit.  Maybe I have a gutter-mind, but at a glance the top-sticky-outey thing looked kinda like... a...uhhh... 'appendage'?

Maybe that can help with the shading....probably won't.  I think that "appendage" Serena is referring to could easily be trimmed down, as the other leg doesn't seem to have such a steep curve anyways.

I'm just curious, how come it's only outlined around the legs?  Also, I'm not sure, but just from a glance, the arms seem a bit too short....and while on the arms, the mech's left arm blends in with the torso, so maybe you can work that out.

The will be really cool if it was animated, so you better pull through. Keep pixelling!

What's with the bright red lines? They're really buggin' my eyes.

Lol, didn't notice it before you said it. I'll try to make it less look like an di-I mean "appendage".  :P

Yeah, the reason the legs were outlined was because with the three colors I chose they were blending in with the rest of the robot. This is pretty much my first problem right now, how to pixel the robot to keep the definitions I did in the rainbow colored version. Your version looks way better, but here is my second problem, how do you choose your highlight color? I can't seem to know what and how to choose a color for the dark areas and the light areas, other then going darker or lighter. Doing a good metallic look needs good color choices.

As for the arms, they are actually longer, they are just hidden by the legs. Here is a screenie of the piece without the leg layer. Maybe I should raise one of the arms up to show the real length of the arms?

They are suppused to be kinda like lights emanating from ridges in the armor. But they look more like painted... but hey! It's a pretty red! My favourite color of the piece! :D

Here a new version of it, I'm still not sure about the colors. I decided to make the yellow parts red as well, but I did leave a little yellow in the middle of the eye for the moment. Is the red too strong, should I reduce it? I did what Rydin did to give it more metallic look, added some white dots to give a reflective feel. Reduced the "appendage", Serena is it okay now? ???

I made an edit:

I cut out a lot of details in favor of readability. I also messed with/reduced colors. Do what you will with it :D

I'm not a fan of the way you did the legs, but I like your interpretation of the torso and arms. Has this low tech look, might use the style for some of the other bots I will need to make.  ;) Can somebody give me some CC on the red color in the last version I did, does it bugs you like Xion?

Yeah, the red severely hurts the readability of the piece.  It makes it look incredibly messy.  It would probably be better off to keep it simple for most of the work in small sprites like this, keep any of those details for the final cut, after you have a clean, readable piece.

It looks good though, I daresay it's certainly an improvement from your other stuff

Thanks Darien, I will see what I can do about that. I'll try to blend in the red more and if it doesn't work I might just take it out.
