Title: Small fighter sprite
Post by: Gunne on March 05, 2007, 10:32:25 pm
hey, here's a little fighter sprite (yes, it's small) that I worked on the last couple of days, I like it but some things still seems off. I think I need some help with it before I try to animate it.

I'm not the master of critism but I can tell you what's off at a quick glance;

His arm is virtualy equally tall as his legs it seems, maybe you may want to adjust that a bit?

Very cool...  ;D
I would remove that lighter color from the darker leg, and change a bit that dark-purple that you've used to shadow the pants and the shirt...

The arms look fine even if they're unproportional, but fixing that a bit wouldn't kill anyone  :y:

That's how it sort of should be, actually. The hand always reaches the person's thigh.

This character's arm would reach down to its knee and beyond if it wasn't bent, so yes it should be fixed.

i think everything has been bent quite a bit to give that issulsion, and that the arms are much closer to regularly proporitioned ones than people think.  It might look a little better to move all the rows above the triceps down one pixel, but thats all id reccomend

I think it is a very cool peice, with only one more crit upon the ones already stated. The forearm on the arm closest the vewier looks bent to me. I think it's a problem in the area near the wrist. :y:

the arm is the right length, take into consideration that he is slumped over significantly. slouch over like he is and put your hand at your midthigh, your arm will be bent about that much.

sorry for this late reply but I really didn't want to post without an update, thanks for the comments everyone. About the arms as they were actually what most crits were about, yes I also think they looked kinda odd and I dunno if the arms are too long or the legs are too short and I haven't updated it since the first post because:

I've made a whole new bigger version that's supposed to be me, used Iori from KoF as an reference for the stance since I don't have any experience with fighting stances  and his one looked regular,

Crap, Photobucket is down  >:(

yes, long legs !yus!

How about it, anything that needs to be corrected?

I think your first guy's legs are too short, or his top half is too long, either way I think the slight change does it good.

thanks Terley for the edit, yes it looks a bit better but when I look at it, it is also that I've made the arms way to big in comparison with the whole body.

I tried to animate the bigger fighter sprite, still needs to be cleaned up at some places:

He jiggles too much, it looks like he's having a small seizure, or that he's very cold and shaking

I cleaned the frames up a bit, although it's still not finished.

@Gil: thanks for pointing that out, didn't noticed it before :yell:

Alright, I definately see where you're trying to go, but your methods don't work. This is a slight improvement, but you shouldn't be satisfied yet.

Try defining it in keyframes. The movement should be smoother and more exagerated. Do you have a reference animation from KoF that does something similar perhaps? Study some of those...

mm the ffet should move. The animation stops at his ankles, at least make his feet shuffle or something.. But It looks nice right now ;D

thanks I will work on it. I have looked upon a sheet of Iori and I think I get the point now.

Malor, I was thinking about feet movement, but within the frames I had (4 unique, 5 in total) I thought it would look sloppy, but since I am gonna have 7 frames now I may add some feet movement in the next update.
