Title: Gallery of the Mind ~ Microer Looking To Better His Craft
Post by: Xenio on March 03, 2007, 03:47:21 am
Hello. I am Xenio. My real name is Joey and I live in Vermont U.S.A. I have 2 sisters who have moved out so it's just me and my parents. A while ago, I got into making micro heroes. Now I'm looking into trying something new. I was hoping thar's what pixel art was gonna be. I do use occastional tools in my microes which I know is bad. I have gone by many names on the web such as Charmed, Xenio, Arduous, Charmed_2, etc. I thought I would post some of my work to let you guys know where my abilities are.

Any advice/comments/criticism is accepted and appriciated. After all, I am trying to improve. I tryed color something fron the line art trade. I did an okay job and got my first piece of experience with dithering. And no tools!

Welcome to the forum ;)
Nice linearts. In my opinion the shading is the biggest problem about these pieces. Seems very pillow-shaded. Try to use more intresting Lightsources, instead of shading it as if the viewer was the lightsource. Also you could try to find more intresting colour-ramps. Learn hue-shifting and stuff like that.

There just photoshop-colored linearts.  why not try placing the pixels by hand, the results will be a lot cleaner and better.

Yeah, that is just photoshopping. I tryed placing the pixels by hand but that was before I learned about dithering

Thanks. Yeah, I need to work on lightsources. And hue-shifts.

Wait one minute, could anyone please tell me what a hue shift is and like a tutorial or something on lights? Thank you!

it would be a good color scheme the they way you gradient dithered it makes it not stand out as much.

Yeah, found the outline at the exchange. As for the advice, I'm not sure what you're talking about... ???

@hue-shifting:
Hue shifting is a common technique to make colourramps more intresting and/or realistic.
Here's an example:

The ramps have colder colours in the darker tones and warmer colours in the brighter tones.

Thank you very much. I will keep that in mind on the next piece I do.

I don't think that's what hue-shifting means  ???
But the colder-colored shadows is still a good tip. Not to be used in every situation (I've seen people break that rule to great effect) but it's a nice rule of thumb.  :y:

Actually, that's exactly what hue shifting means. Giving blue to the shadows and yellow to the highlights... I would know, since I coined the term at some point in the past...

hue shift is a shift in hue.. pretty simple to understand, but not as simple to master.
the top one has no hue shift, while the bottom shows a shift in the hue(in this case green to blue).

You coined the term hue shifting (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bezold-Br%C3%BCcke_shift)?   Now, that article is talking about a slightly different effect of course, but it is still covering shifts in hue...and its from 1874.

HOWEVER.  Regardless of that, "hue shifting" does not mean "blue to the shadows and yellow to the highlights."  It CAN mean that, but generally speaking, it means that the hue, or the base color or shade (e.g. "Yellow") does not remain the only color in your ramp.  For example, you can add red or green to your darker colors and achieve a successful hue shift as well.

EDIT - Alex's example is perfect, green to blue is ONE type of hue shift, not THE type of hue shift!

I coined the exact frase "hue shift" as it is used on pixelation, not the technique or even the term in general. A couple of years ago there was a thread on colour theory and everybody was using a different long term, and I called it "hue shift" in one post. It kinda stuck and now everyone here seems to use it

I agree that it can mean a shift towards another colour too, but in general, if people on pixelation ask you to hue shift your piece, they mean adding blue to the shadows, not gradienting your piece... ;)

Uh, I cannot say Gil is responsible for that term, though I was around I don't remember this at all. I don't think it's a term one invents, it's a very old artistic practise. Let's not go overboard with the bragging rights here.

Ah, come on, give me at least some bragging rights, it's all I have :P
Selout existed since Da Vinci, yet we all say Tsu coined it...

Respect ma authoritah!

I understand the desire to be a visible contributor to pixel art, we've all tried a bit of it, be it selout, ditaac, interlace dithering, but these things are genuine pixel-related phenomenae. Your 'hue shifting' isn't. And Tsu didn't coin sel-out, that other devil-worshiper, Pkmays did. I'm sorry, you don't get any bragging rights for hue shifting, at least not from me. If you want to be remembered for something positive, why don't you pop around more than once every 3 years and give honest, valuable critique to people? I'm sure that'll do you more karmic good than 'I invented hue shifting!' ever will.

I don't pop in every three years. If you would check my record you would see I have done more than my fair share for this community and I have never been gone for more than a few months (because I was working too long hours for any internet access). I don't like your tone here. :mean: We'll stop this before it gets to a discussion though. I'm a laid back person and last thing I'd want is an argument...

Here's a new piece I did. I realize the head needs work but I kind of like how the body looks.

I got the outline from the line art exchange. Any suggestions?

Looks/Is pillow shaded. Don't ever use that technique.

Yeah some parts are, but I rather like how it looks on the body... what would make it look better?

A proper lightsource that isn't internal glow.

The body isn't the problem if you assume a light source from above,as the head would naturally toss a shadow unto the neck and etc.
The head, arms and legs could be shaded with a light source assumed from above the ... uhm... thing. Also, that means you barely/don't have to change the way the body is shaded.
Also, mo' contrast is good (I learned that after about 50 million people pounded it into my head, and even now, I have problems with it.  :blind:)

Ummm, I'm a little stupid when it comes to big words....

Same thing to you  Asian Gamer, I only got 1/2 of what you're saying. Sorry guys but I'm still new and need a little clarification as to what I'm doing wrong.

don't just build up colors for the sake of filling up space. pick a place for the light to come from, and THEN build your shades according to shadows and highlights.
