Title: [WIP] platformer
Post by: mice on February 24, 2007, 06:59:01 pm
Took a break from the shmup and decided to start on the platformer. After watching Helms wonderful video I was full of inspiration, and two seconds later it was all gone...  ???

First part is going to be your standard deactive-the-energy-thingie affair.
The main char isn't going to look like that, he is going to be a robot though, but not with your regular arms and legs.

...and frozen...but it didn't work as good this time...

Something I noticed about this piece, are the colours. They hurt my eyes, and are ridicoulusly satured. Here's an edit:

Only colour changes, lines were left untouched, because they are quite potent.

WOAH

no offence, but your edit hurt the problem more then it helped it.  i cant even stare at your version for more then 10 seconds.

my advice would be to up the contrast on the rocks a bit, and revamp the sky compleatly.

The problem is that I don't have access to those colors. It's 9 bits only, (0, 36 ,73, 109, 145, 182, 218, 255 for each of R, G and B)
Although your colors are really nice ZoSo.

I tried to up the contrast on the rocks, different?
The bkg needs revamping, true. Will work more on it.

Can i just say, use any colour other than blue for the sky, pleeease  :P

I really like this, apart from the colour choices of course, but restrictions are restrictions. The way the metal pipe is shaded is a little poor (random vertical lines = bleh), especially compared with the lovely muddy rocks.

'N' i think the sprite is fab. Keep it up.

I love the new sky colour, that blue is so megamanish.. Which rocks. Rocks and Grass could be better somehow. Anyway i love it, keep it up.

Najs bajs, mice! You should definitely keep the blue sky, it gives the enviroment a much nicer atmosphere. My biggest complaint would be that the grass looks a bit like green slime smeared over the rocks/dirt. I think that if you added some more vegetation (a couple of bushes, some plants, etc) it would take away that impression. Looking forward to seeing the rest of this!  :)

So if I keep the blue and get rid of it at the same time, does it look like this then?  ;D

I removed the distractions from the pic for the time being.
Do the new clouds help at all?
Also, I brightened the rocks a bit. Is that going the right way?

Got 3 colors left of the 16col pal so I'll add another transition color to the rocks.
When you mention it, it do look like slime...I'll do some proper grass sticking up and add some diverse veggie immediately.

my only qualm iis the supersat grass, it looks like someone painting straight from the tube (which imo works with expressionism, but not so much with landscapes or backgrounds).  The new sky color is much better.

It is stretched 9bit colourdepth tho, so I guess those edits wont help all that much :B
I quite like it. Ye olde schoole.

what i remember of working with 9bit is that there were many, many colors available in the medium-saturauration range that could be used nicely together without burning the eyes.  Is there another restriction that keeps you to using only a few colors in each area, or can you add some to round this out?  This looks a lot like the kind of thing i sometimes do actually the way it jumps so harshly between shades, it really could use a smooth, and the hues of the intermediate values could be used to add more color depth to the piece

massive valuejumps are not avoidable in 9bit UNLESS you use hueshifts, which allows for some minimisation.

I tried to match your colors helm, but they seem to be too far apart.
But one thing is clear now, I know why the grass looks so slimey...

EDIT:
Spent the evening anti-aliasing the mud. Pretty satisfied, or shouldn't I be?

Personally, I liked your retro "lush" colours. Art doesn't always have to be so moody. ;)

Personally dont like the AA you have between the grass and dirt. Screws up the depth you had in the previous version. It looks like the dirt is farther out[to our eye] then the grass

Actually, there's very little I like about the AA. It seems wasteful to only have those two 'tween browns for AA. Almsot boring. Why not use these extra colours to suggest additional form. Right now, it makes your tiles look cartoonish which doesn't seem like your intent.

this is how I would mess with it but I don't know what the restrictions of 9-bit are, so it's probably not do-able.  I like the idea of having a silhouetted game like your ones where the foreground is really dark and the BG is really bright/intense, but I think I just dulled everything down in mine, haha
