Title: Where do you want to be in 5 years - artistically and professionally?
Post by: AdamTierney on February 19, 2007, 05:37:59 pm
Simple question. :) For me:

Professionally: Working on some original IP (non-licensed) games for work. Non-commercially, doing some design/art for a retro platform (ie, Atari 2600 or NES).
Artistically: My pixelling skills have gone to crap, but I'd like to improve my animation skills a bit (2D and 3D).

I want to stop sucking. I started sucking a while ago but in 5 years I hope I will be able to start thinking about pixeling proffesionaly. But I don't know the age limit or anything.

professionally: I don't know yet. I probably won't pursue art. Maybe if I have free time i'll be working more freelance.

artistically: Errr, make some enjoyable stuff. Explore other art styles maybe. I hope to work more in depth with animation as well.

Artistically, I want to be able to paint well. That'll probably take more than 5 years... Yeah, I dunno.

Want to learn me some anatomy. :B

I'd also like to get 3d modeling/that stuff.

Professionally (well, I don't really plan on doing anything really professionally, but it works as a category, I guess), I want to finish a couple of games, hopefully the shmup I'm working on now'll be done by then, along with a few others. I'd also like to make a first person shooter eventually. Oh, and maybe selling my games too...  :-\

Let's consider 'professionally' to mean any projects or applications of your art, not just paying jobs. So where you'd like your art to be in 5 years, and what you'd like to be doing with it then.

Making more comics for a living. Having advanced my skill as a storyteller and draftsman. No pixel art pay jobs. Having put out a specific pixel art exhibition I have in mind. Having finished the current games I'm working on. That is all.

in 5 years.
hopefully Ill be out of highschool and maby in some art college.

Not entirely sure where I want to end up.
Probably wouldnt take pixel art as a career - but keep it as a hobby.
I want to learn better anatomy and realism.
Maby end up working for some larger game companies, or maby get into advertising.

Ideally, Id want to get into concepts for movies.
but that may be pretty far fetched.

Not sure though really.
Interesting question

Artistically - to have my art on the same level as some of my idols, Nieborg, Fejer, Big-Brother etc..

Professionally - Design for me is a hobby, I take what-ever freelance work i can, but working in the real world pays better.  5 years from now i wouldn't mind some freeware/commercial games to my name, but i would prefer to be working on a PHD in Maths.

5 years...
Artistic: In college for some form of art, and improved drastically over my current skill level. I want to be able to create dynamic scenes and anatomically correct characters. I want to be able to paint to some degree. I want to be very good at animation. I want my surreal drawings to take people to the brink of sanity and back.
The brink of terror.
Of euphoria.

Professional: I want to have finished or nearly finished a large game. Probably platformer, but possibly Zelda-esque top-down RPG. I want to paint a mural. I want to begin work on a profitable game. I want to paint a mural.

...

I want a patch of blue sky to follow me.

In 5 years I'm gonna be 18, probably tryin to find some job that pays me enough. I'll probably also be workin' on education so I can be a zoologist. I wanna do fleelance pixels in my free time.
Artistic: I want my ability to stick to a style to increase, and I'm interested in C64. Mostly though, I just want to be good enough for the graphics on a game I plan to work on to be good enough. I also want to draw better.

Professionally - I'd like to be working as a web designer and a graphic designer. Ideally, I'd like to be a freelance designer but I don't mind working under a company.

Artistically - I love to do art from pixels to illustration even sculpture. If I can get good work done, I'd consider having a show or a residency somewhere.

I know generally of the effects which I wish to accomplish, but I do not yet know the ways to reach them.
So i'm currently searching for the methods for which I'd be capable of approaching these outcomes I have in my mind.
I may not fully get to this point within 5 years as I do not know the distance between, but I do know I am getting closer. :y:

Professionally:   I hope to have released a freeware game that I feel completely content with (if this counts as pro) and people enjoy. Maybe even be on a path to make games "professionally", mostly something for sale on a platform other than PC.

Artistically:   I hope to have almost perfected my drawing skills. I feel I am on the path to get good with coloring and anatomy, finally. I don't really care how I progress with pixelling or animating, since that's not what I want to do with my life. I'd rather be great at designing and drawing for both art and game ideas.

I just hope it can happen.  :(
I am on a good track with a new freeware game anyway!

Professionally, I want to know what I plan to do and be in training to do it. Vague, yes, but when it's my goal to figure out what I want to do, I guess it's hard not to be vague. I'm thinking doing carpentry at a trade school or something. I'd hope to have a job with health insurance as well. I have a little interest in doing something with pixels, but I'm sure that won't amount to anything real.

Artistically, I want to be better with watercolors, acrylics, maybe pick up playing bass again and hopefully writing somewhat fluently in French. Hopefully getting better at the fundamentals of art happens upon me somewhere within that list.

professionally, I want to atleast have a generic, brainless job and can still freelance pixel on the side, but I'd really love to get a contract for a commercial game that doesn't suck :P

artistically, I'll be better in 5 years, especially if pixelation is still running. As long as I improve I'll be happy

5 years I'll be 23...  :watev:

Man, I can't see past tomorrow  :-\

I'd be perfectly happy doing print ads for a living, though I see my self doing art for personal, non-money reasons til the day I die.

Professionally, I want to get my name in the credits of atleast one bestseller game
Artistically, keeping pixelling as a hobby and become better than anyone else in pixelling :P :D

But first I have to pass highschool and go study architecture

Where am I five years from now? Well, after graduating from university I'll hopefully hop aboard either DICE or Starbreeze to get some industry experience, then maybe start an indie-studio, if I can find other people to join me. I hear Capcom is branching out in Europe so there's that possibility too.

In the artistic sense, I'll probably have a stronger style in my drawings. Hopefully I'll have one or several comics in the works and finished. If I could get one published it would be awesome. (and I'm talking about comics in hardcover or pocketbooks. I like to make longer stories)

Well, I'll definitely keep working with 3D, that's for sure. I hope to find a job, any job, involving graphics or design in games. And thanks to my current education and the extreme lack of good 3D artists in this country, I don't think I'll have any problems with that.

I'm also very interested in animation, both 3D and traditional 2D animation. If I can bother, I might try doing some "pencil" animations sometime. But considering how short my attention span is with 2D art nowdays.. we'll see...

I want to have a book printed and published, and I want to have finished a game. Ideally, I'd love to find a way to make games for a living, but I think it'd take a huge stroke of luck for that to happen. I also want to get into grad school, but first I need to figure out how to pay for it.

I'd like to Get off me "arse" and finish writing my script/plot line to my characters, and their story. Also would like to write a script one day, but my skills as a writer are pretty much crap as of yet. Need to learn better structure and whatnot. Professionally, I see myself still doing tech support, but hopefully I can move up a bit, for better pay. If I start getting a better grasp of this pixeling thing, technically speaking, I'll try and start helping with creating some games.

Artistically, I NEED to learn how to draw digital art, other than pixels. I was getting in the groove of Photoshop, but lost interest, due to everything I drew looked so blurry. I still don't understand how people get such clear lines, with their finished product. I'll figure something out though.
I'm in a gray area at the moment, but hope to soon light a fire in my ass to get things going towards a positive direction...

in 5 years I'd love to be out of uni and into a job that I'd enjoy, the reason why people go through years of education is to 'find the job for you'. Atm I have no idea what exactly what Im going to be doing but I am interested in animation, I've always had a vivid image that some day I'd be animating..

But artistically I feel things are falling into place, I do have a natural desire to live to my potential.. constantly looking back at work in disgust and swearing that I can do better, what was I thinking!?.. But im sure a lot of you are like that.

What I really need to concentrate on is the bare essentials of art, traditional techniques and learning to just observe and take in as much as I can. Im going to have to put together a portfolio this year to prepare for university next year so I've got a lot of work ahead of me, Im no where near what I expect of myself.

I've read a few animating books, so I know what im getting myself into.. What I need to learn is how to be an excellent draftsman, and to learn how to draw well. Animating can always be picked up later.

If any of you lot lives up to your dreams, don't forget about us will ya  :)

Oh yeah, I'd also like to get better at reading my poetry and spoken word as well as finish at least three really long short stories so I can compile and publish them.

Artistically, to become a master of drawing anatomy. I've recently picked up a couple of books on the matter. I also want to spice up my animation skills while I'm at it and plan to purchase the ever elusive Animators Survival Kit to help myself along the way. I also plan to have a few indie freeware games under my belt.

Professionally, I see myself smacking my bitches for not paying up. Damn you hoes! ... pimpin' ain't easy yo

Artistically: Acceptable knowledge of human and animal anatomy, perspective, color theory, and observation.  Am I really asking that much? ;)  Color theory is getting there, but the rest have a really long ways to go...

Professionally: Designing, programming and painting original games for whatever the prevalent low-end handheld or console is at the time (equivalent of XBLA, DS, PSP, or WiiVC).  The 2 or 3 games we develop and release by then will put us on stable footing with our publisher of choice (Atlus, maybe Majesco or Capcom).  And, while I'm at it, maidens!  Maidens with grapes.  And those big leaves.

Hobbies: I want to create an original NES ROM - ASM, art and music, the whole deal.  Drawing dinos is pretty high on the list too.  Maquettes fascinate me, and I'd like to write more.

Title: Re: Where do you want to be in 5 years - artistically and professionally?

I think that's more dino than robot, really. The robot people revel in the robotness of the robot, not what shape the robot emulates. Robots are robots, not robot pirates nor robot ninjas.

as a dino person, i feel robot dinos are more robot for exactly those reasons, but I think it may be an issue of semantics

Artistically: Wow, I'm pretty much were I'd like to be for a few years now. I'm confident in my skills, I accepted my style. What I need is a lot of study, experience, and what not. That could take well over 5 years though. I'll probably wander into 3D sometime soon...

Professionally: Graduated from college. That's all. Maybe finish a game already, maybe not... I plan on finishing this bachelor (applied informatics), but I'll probably do another one afterwards, so I don't know if I'll graduate within 5 years. I'm 21 already, so I'd better I guess...

Artistically: Being able to draw people quickly and easily would be a huge plus. As would understanding about how light hits objects more intuitively. and the whole, getting better at anatomy colour theory and shading business.

Professionally: Finishing a small game by the end of this year, wowing people at the ANU (university) with my portfolio and taking a course in digital arts. after that working on final fantasy games intill i die of exhaustion (and happiness). thats the plan!

Oh and Robots > Dinos.
