Seems kind of unconventional pixelling/design for a game in 1985. Thoughts?

The black outlines on the sprites seems out of place when compared to the game's contemporaries....maybe it has something to do with all the ports of the game though...I know it isn't reliable, but a google image search brings a multitude of different screens of this game on different systems. I should really read more about it, but perhaps when going from version to the other, they just left the lines and added more detail? ??? That still wouldn't explain the wonderfully funky ice background...
Interesting to say the least. The characters look like something that one would find on Pixelation rather than back in an arcade in 85...

I'd say they're both based on other artworks. They're reference, hence the odd pixel placement.
The fist one I can't say for sure, but I have seen a lot of old Asian paintings of waterfalls and landscapes. The curves and shades on the rocks as well as their shape seem consistent. The water also closely matches the style which were usually plain white with clearly visible and separate wave lines to show the water's direction. The second shot is most likely based on the Forbidden City in Beijing. I've been there, and the sections separated by canals/rivers with the garden in the distance look very much alike. Very few buildings had the space or influence to have those things. Given it's colour though, it looks like a regular temple. The red was used a lot in Asia for regular temples. The Chinese emperor used yellow/gold roofs. I guess they used it as reference, but changed certain things to not link it back to the source.
The first one might also just be a picture or scan, reduced to fit into the game.

So does this prove time travel is possible? :o

I also believe that the first Image of the waterfalls is scanned and then color reduced.
same technique was used in the immortal main screen :

I guess it's the same messy technique. Just my Thoughts.

What year did digital scanners come out for the commercial market?

I think it is more likely that this was drawn in Deluxe Paint. It has tools like blend and smear which create results like seen on the background bits.
And it was done rather quick because of deadlines and such. I doubt that this was scanned. Same with the Yie Ar ones. Just referenced/inspired by photos in Yie Ars case, look at the super minimal tileset, why scan that? Would be more cleaning than just scribbling it in some graphics editor.

This was the offical cover for the game.

I say bad scan.
-
Hm, could indeed be a scan, but some proportions are slightly off. But could be "touched up" for whatever reason.
Scans of stuff are not that uncommon, superold strippoker games on the C64 had scans from photos such as Samantha Fox Strippoker and that is from 86.
So it is indeed not unfeasible.

the proportion issue is just pixel ratio, I say. The screenshot is 320x200, right? Old-style pc monitors had some stetching, no?
-
yes they had at that res, but the nose and stuff is different, it has deffo been touched up. Either way, that is no pixelart.
